In 1904 there was an open brethren assembly in Elkhart, [[Indiana|IN]] corresponded by E. Keifer.

There was an Ernst Friedrich Kiefer, a shoemaker, who was born in Oct. 1855 in Germany. He may have lived in Brooklyn in 1875.  In 1879, he married Barbara Christena Bechler (b. May 1856 Germany.  They arrived in America via New York on Aug. 24, 1883, and settled in Elkhart prior to 1900.  There was a John F. Kiefer Shoe store at 413 S. Main St. in Elkhart as early as 1900, and as late as 1915.  Ernst's son Karl was clerking the shoe store in 1900.  In 1930, his son Karl was working as a shoe salesman.
