Carl Daniel "Dan" Andersen was born on June 18, 1907 in Boelus, Nebraska in Howard County. He was raised among Baptists, and served in the Belgian Congo with his wife Martha. At some juncture, they joined with the open brethren (OB), then joined the TW's (EB) in 1948 after a disagreement with A.P. Gibbs about reception at Greenwood Hills Conference Center at a missions conference. He became a laboring brother among the TW's.

Dan was the son of Paul Andersen (b. 1883 Dannebrog, Howard, NE - d. 1975 Des Moines, IA) & Hulda Marie Danielsen Andersen (b. 1888 Council Bluffs, IA - d. 1978 Des Moines, IA). In 1920, the family was living in nearby Loup Fork.

He had a younger sister, Rosa Viola Andersen Doane (b. 1912 Howard Co., NE - d. 1996 Portland, Multnomah, OR, who relocated to Portland in 1937 for nurses' training at Emanuel Hospital, where she eventually retired as an anesthetist. in 1949, she married Lewis Leslie Doane (b. 1915 Cornelius, Washington, OR - d. 1991 Portland, OR).

Lewis owned and operated Doane's Shoe Store for 17 years, and was noted as a Bible teacher for Northwest churches, clubs and senior citizen centers. He was also a member of the Christian Businessmen's Council, and of Grace & Truth Chapel. Her memorial service was at Grace Bible Fellowship. Lewis was a son of Leslie Lewis Doane (b. 1886 Baker City, Baker, OR - d. 1971 Multnomah Co., OR) & Emma A. Krause Doane (1889-1937 Cornelius, OR). Lewis' father's 2nd wife was Lela Leona Peterson Doane (b. 1887 Clay Center, Clay, KS - d. 1972 Forest Grove, Washington, OR).

Dan attended Moody Bible Institute in preparation for the mission field in Africa, joined by Martha Carolyn Andersen, who would become his wife in 1929. Dan studied at Moody 1926-1928, then a year at Des Moines University. Martha studied 1926-1927 at Moody, returning home due to illness.
