History

Prior to 1878, an exclusive sister named Mrs. Jeanette Haskell Sturtevant lived in Milo, Piscataquis County in Northwest Maine thru her death on Feb. 27, 1880 at the age of 48..

Haskell family

Jeanette was born Feb. 5, 1832 in Guilford Center, Piscataquis, Maine.

Elihu B. Haskell (Jeanette's maiden name) was one of the earliest graduates of Colby University of the same county.  She also may be related to C.E. Haskell that served as one of three correspondents of Auburn Meeting Room, ME in the same era.

Sturtevant family

Jeanette was married to Capt. Walter William Sturtevant, whose ancestors were among the earliest settlers of Milo, which was founded in 1823. Walter served in the Civil War.

Walter's father, Moses Sturtevant (1796-1865) was born in Massachusetts, but Walter was born in Milo the same year that it was founded. An unknown relative, William Sturtevant, was elected one of three town officials in 1830. Moses served in this position in 1841. He also served as the third commander of the first military company in Milo, known as the Milo Light Infantry Company, founded in April 1824. Moses had previously served as a corporal in the War of 1812, on behalf of Fayette, ME, as well as the forementioned William Sturtevant who served as a musician.

The Sturtevant family was also among the early settlers of nearby Parkman, and one built one of the earliest sawmills around 1820, which was located "two miles below Pingree's, near Parkman Corner". He was described in an early county history as "a man of good parts, but strong drink led him to neglect his business, and eventually slew him. The mill passed to the Curtiss Brothers who added a grist mill." A Sturtevant, along with a Mr. Mitchell, occupied the second store in town in the late 1830's. There was also a Thomas D. Sturtevant of Blanchard who, in 1841, was the third college graduate of the county, of Bowdoin College, and of Bangor Theological Seminary in 1844.
