Early Families

Clarke family

Caleb I and his sons Caleb Jr. & Charles practiced law as "Clarke & Clarke" with offices in the American Savings Bank Building in Atlanta, and were councillors to the bank. Dr. K.L. Reid officiated the elder Caleb's memorial in 1933, and 15 members of the Atlanta Bar Association acted as pallbearers, see Newspapers.com for the full list.

  • Capt. Thomas Henry "Hal" Clarke (b. 1844 Longtown, Fairfield, SC - d. 1890 Camden, Kershaw, SC), son of Henry Harrison Clarke (1813-1863) & Louisa Howell Goodwyn Clarke (b. 1819 Richland Co., SC - d. 1865 Winnsboro, Fairfield, SC).
  • Sallie Lang Boykin Clarke (1848-1887 SC), daughter of Burwell Boykin II (1811-1861 Camden, SC) & Sallie Wylie Lang Boykin (1805-1889 Camden, SC). Burwell was a descendant of (Edward or Thomas) Boykin (b. 1620 Charing Cross, Kent, England - d. 1680 Isle of Wight, Virginia Colony) who emigrated in 1665. The Boykin family resided in Camden (Columbia metro), SC since Burwell's parents marriage in 1782, four years before the city was incorporated.
    • Burwell Boykin Clarke (1866-1928 Camden, SC). "Prominent lawyer and popular citizen". He was a member of the local bar 1888-1928. Presbyterian, buried in the Quaker cemetery.
    • Louise "Lulu" Clarke DeSaussure (b. 1870 Camden, SC - d. 1898). Husband: John McPherson DeSaussure (b. 1856 Camden, SC - d. 1914 Atlanta, GA), son of Lieut. Henry William DeSaussure (b. 1835 Camden, SC - d. 1862 Richmond, Henrico, VA) & Mary H. Chestnut Reynolds DeSaussure (b. 1837 Camden, SC - d. 1903 Atlanta, GA). Henry DeSaussure was killed in action in the battle around Fraser's farm during the Civil War. According to her obit, Mary was "one of the best known women in Atlanta, having made many friends through her charming ways and through her associations with Church work".
    • Thomas Henry Clarke (b. 1872 Camden, SC - d. 1959 Sumter, SC). Wife: May Kennedy Holman Clarke (b. 1873 Lee Co., SC - d. 1953 Sumter, SC). Thomas moved to Sumter in 1895, and promptly co-founded the Sumter Dry Goods Co., alongside G.A. Lemmon, where he worked until his death, with exception of one year in Danville, VA. He was also director of the The National Bank of South Carolina, and an elder of First Presbyterian, and a member of the Fraser-Edmunds Men's Bible Class.
    • Sallie Boykin Clarke DeSaussure (b. 1878 Camden, SC - d. 1965). After Sallie's sister Lulu died in 1898, she married her widower, John McPherson DeSaussure (1856-1914).

Wife (1903 @ Memphis, TN): Margaret "Mary" Cox DeSaussure Clarke (b. 1876 Camden, SC - d. 1970 Fulton Co., GA), daughter of Gen. Charles Alfred DeSaussure (b. 1846 McPhersonville, Beaufort, SC - d. 1935 Memphis, Shelby, TN) & Ellen Chesnut Reynolds DeSaussure (b. 1842 Camden, SC - d. 1920 Memphis, TN). Charles DeSaussure was a cousin of the previous mentioned DeSaussure family, and was the commander-in-chief of the United Confederate veterans of the Civil War, elected in 1931. He enlisted at the age of 16 in the Beaufort volunteer artillery, fighting in the battle of Honey Hill, Pocotaligo and others. He also served as general passenger agent for the Southern Railway company. His autobio may be found at Univ. of North Carolina archive. Caleb & Mary Clarke moved to Atlanta in 1903 after their wedding at St. Luke's in Idlewild, presided by T.D. Duvall.

Wife: Spencer Mcgaughey Clarke (b. 1910 Hapeville, Atlanta metro, Fulton, GA - d. 1995 Atlanta, GA), daughter of Mary Pansy Spencer McGaughey (b. 1884 Atlanta, GA - d. 1970 Decatur, GA) & Andrew Dickens McGaughey (b. 1878 TN - d. 1964). Pansy was a member of Decatur Presbyterian.

Dashwood family

  • Dr. Percy Thomas Dashwood +1900-1933+ (b. 1861 Ryde, Isle of Wight, [[England|Eng.; emig. 1884; d. 1943 Buckhead, Atlanta metro, Fulton, GA), son of Thomas Dashwood, Jr. (1822-1907) & Helen Hannah Snell Dashwood (1833-1925); Helen was daughter of John (1808-1878) & Sarah Early Snell (1810-1867). Grandson of Thomas Dashwood, Sr. (1788-1861) & Elizabeth Taylor Dashwood (1788-1864). Dr. Dashwood had a dental practice, and was for many years (1917-1923+) a professor of crown, bridge work and dental histology at the Southern Dental College of Atlanta, later known as the Emory College School of Dentistry, which was active 1887-1992. Its first Dean was Dr. Thomas P. Hinton, whose father founded this assembly. It was the first dental college in GA, FL, AL, NC and SC. Dr. Dashwood graduated in 1898 from Atlanta Dental College (before the merger), and his first year teaching at ASDC was the date of the merger between Southern Dental School and Atlanta Dental College.

In 1940, Walter was employed with the Globe Union Battery Co., 949 Marietta St., Atlanta which provided car batteries to Sears starting in 1924. He served with the Army from 1941-1942 during WWII.

  • George Hinman +1888-1905+ (b. 1828 Teigh, Rutland, Eng. - d. 1907 Atlanta, GA), son of William Hinman (b. 1791 Ashwell, Rutland, Eng. - d. 1918) & Mary Rowbottom Hinman (b. 1791 Fiskerton, Nottinghamshire, Eng. - d. 1852 Oakham, Rutland, Eng.). In 1856, George was employed as a builder. He lived in Leicester, England in 1861-1871 while serving as an attendant at a mental hospital. 1895 @ 669 Marietta St. across from the Hall, S. John Duncan resided there that year also. In 1900, George was a florist.

    • Dr. Thomas Philip Hinman (b. 1870 Stratford, Perth, ON - d. 1931). Thomas served as Dean (1917-1922+) of Emory University School of Dentistry, formerly known as Atlanta-Southern Dental College which was the first dental college in five states in the Southern U.S., and later the first in the nation to exclusively offer post-grad training. Dr. Hinman was also a professor specializing in Oral Surgery, Orthodontia, Porcelain Art, & X-Ray 1904-1910 & Oral Surgery 1917-1923+ after the merger. He was introduced to the school handbook that he needed "no introduction to the Dental profession, as he is one of the most widely and favorably known men in the South as an expert in Porcelain, Orthodontia and X-Ray work".
    • Dr. Richard Edward Hinman (b. 1859 Stratford, Perth, ON - d. 1919 Atlanta, GA). He graduated from Hahnemann Medical College (named for the founder of homeopathy) in 1882, then practiced for 12 years in Charlotte, N.C. He then removed to Atlanta where he became a founding professor of physiology and histology at Atlanta Dental College 1893-1917, then continued after the merger with Southern Dental College until his death in 1919. He also was a member for 20 years each of the U.S. pension examining board, and the state examining medical board, serving as president of the latter. Dr. Russell K. Smith officiated his memorial service, active pallbearers were among the faculty of ASDC, including Dr. Percy T. Dashwood, Dr. Claude Hughes, Dr. Malcolm Turner, Dr. Thomas Crenshaw & Dr. J.T. Floyd. Wife (1896 @ Atlanta, GA): Isabella "Belle" Roach Hinman (1871-1937 Atlanta, GA), daughter of Dr. Elisha James Roach (b. 1833 Somerset Co., MD - d. 1890 Atlanta, GA) & Nancy Ellen Mitchell Roach (b. 1835 Henry, SC; m. 1855 Atlanta, GA; d. 1910 Atlanta, GA). After earning his doctorate, Dr. Roach moved to Atlanta in 1854, and served as an Army surgeon during the Civil War, then in 1867 he was elected as city physician for Atlanta. In 1872, he was a charter member of the first board of education there, which he held for 18 years. In 1880, he was elected as a member of the Legislature. Nancy's father was the Hon. Alexander Weldon Mitchell (b. 1812 Madison Springs, Madison, GA - d. 1891 Atlanta, GA), one of the oldest citizens in Atlanta in 1890. Elisha was in physician practice eventually with his son (Isabel's brother) Dr. Edward Weldon Roach (b. 1857 Atlanta, GA - d. 1897 Charlotte, NC). Belle was raised in Second Baptist (founded in 1854) where she taught Sunday School.

  • John Hatcher Newton +1966 (1895-1966 Atlanta, GA), son of Henry E. Newton (b. 1848 Carroll Co., GA - d. 1923 Atlanta, GA) & Georgia Penelope Hatcher Newton (b. 1857 Cooks, Atlanta metro, GA). John retired in 1960 from the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co., where he had worked since 1909. It is the U.S.' first commercially successful producer of plate glass, and the largest paint company in the world. Raymond W. Powell officiated his memorial. Henry Newton moved to Atlanta as a young man, credited in his obit as a "pioneer Atlantan".
