History

The Guelph Meeting Room was an exclusive brethren assembly founded prior to 1861, and active thru 1933 as part of the Tunbridge Wells exclusives.

Alumni

Checkley

In 1881, Edwin was employed in Guelph as a bank clerk, and residing with the Jones family. From +1914-1917+, he was a contact for the Pittsburgh Meeting Room in Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.

Fear family

• Edwin Wilcox Fear (1816-1895) was born in 1816 in Devon, England, presumably where he was introduced to the Brethren. In fact, by 1841 he was employed as a rigger in Stoke Dameral, an inner suburb of Plymouth. By 1851, he had emigrated to Ontario, Canada and employed as a schoolteacher in Brantford as a schoolteacher, and registered with the census as "Christian Brethren". He relocated to Guelph by 1861, and died in London, Ontario. See Edwin's bio for more on his family.

Harvie family

Robert Harvie was a bookseller in 1897, living at 501 Yonge St., Toronto with his wife Florence and child. But previously, in 1891 Florence was registered as married, but living with her parents in Guelph.

Hayhoe family

Edward emigrated from England, he was initially with the CoE, he was baptized Aug. 8, 1843 at the CoE church in Coltishall, and joined with the OB, presumably in Norfolk.

In 1861, Edward was residing in London, England, working as a servant for George Dickinson (b. 1805 St. Paul, Covent Garden, London, Eng. - d. 1861 St. James, St. Pancras, Camden, Eng.) & Rebecca Herring Harmsworth-Dickinson (b. 1815 Southwark, Surrey, Eng.), their daughter Rebecca C. Harmsworth Stewart (b. 1841 London, Eng.) and their niece Mary Ann Johnson (b. 1842 Chelsea, Middlesex, Eng.)

In 1869, Edward was sent as an open brethren missionary to various tribes of Indians in Ontario, Canada including the Mohawk and Onondaga tribes (both presently with Six Nations of the Grand River), and there's also been talk of work with the Ojibway tribe in the Bruce Peninsula. In 1870 or 1872, Edward attended an conference at Guelph where John Nelson Darby was present. In 1871, Edward lived in Toronto, and identified as CoE.

Susanna Munnings' family was Baptist when they emigrated to Canada, but joined the exclusives between 1861-1871, Darby is known to have visited the family farm. Susanna's father insisted on Edward transferring from the open to exclusives upon marrying his daughter, and the wedding was Nov. 25, 1875 at Manchester, Durham RM, ON. Their collective religious denomination read: "A. Christian". Edward was living in Hamilton, and Susanna in Colborne when they married. Thomas Stephen Young (b. 1837 Ramsey, Lanark, ON - d. 1917 Clifford, Wellington, ON) officiated the wedding, a Presbyterian pastor (1871 @ Hullett, Huron, ON; 1881 @ Clifford, ON). In 1891, Edward & Susanah resided in Belleville.

All of his children remained with the EB, with exception of Kathleen.

• Susannah Sarah Munnings Hayhoe (b. 1854 Uxbridge, Durham, ON - d. 1921 Toronto, ON), daughter of Benjamin Munnings (1830-1903) & Maria Woodgate Munnings (b. 1828 Necton, Suffolk, Eng. - d. 1918). Benjamin & Maria Munnings were PB as early as 1871, when they resided in Colborne, Huron South, ON and it is known that JND visited their family farm in those days.

  • Robert Benjamin Hayhoe (b. 1878 Hamilton, ON - d. 1955 Toronto, ON). Wife (@ Montreal, QC): Elizabeth M. Millard Hayhoe (b. 1875 - d. 1961 Toronto, ON). On his attestation papers for WWI, Robert put down that he was born in Cambridge, England, but censuses indicate his parents were in Hamilton during that time. He was employed as a tea merchant in 1914, and a miner in 1917.

Both Arthur & Dorothy were PB at the time of their wedding, but it was officiated by John Gibson "Jock" Inkster, who pastored Knox Presby. Church 1920-1938. Knox later had pastors including Dr. Ian Rennie (1929-2015), prof of Church History @ Regent College & Tyndale who was raised OB in Winnipeg, MB, as well as Dr. Alistair Donald MacLeod (b. 1938).

Husband: Melbourne Chester Gee (b. 1881 Corrie, ON - d. 1955 Toronto, ON), son of Jeremiah Sidney Gee (b. 1857 Mossley, Middlesex, ON - d. 1923 Toronto, ON) & Hanna Marie Wiles Gee (1860-1931 Listowel, Perth, ON). Jeremiah & Hanna Gee were PB as early as 1891, at Elma, Perth, ON. 1901 @ Listowel, Perth, ON. In 1921, they had a PB boarder: Sarah Grace Fleck (b. 1885 Hamilton, ON - d. 1990 Vancouver, B.C.), daughter of Alexander Fleck (b. 1853 Paisley, Renfrew, Scot. - d. 1932 Vancouver, B.C.) & Eliza Findlay Fleck (b. 1853 Glasgow, Lanark, Scot. - d. 1932 Vancouver, B.C.). Alexander & Eliza Fleck were PB as early as 1891, likely also in Scotland.

Henry served WWI 1914-1918 CEF with the 13th Royal Regt., Brabauto Horse, Royal Canadian Dragoons, 6th Canadian Mounted Rifles, and possibly the 91st Highlanders. Henry was Presby in WWI.

Tilt family

In 1871, John Tilt's father Francis resided in Galt, ON and was employed as a horse doctor (aka veterinary surgeon). Mary, his 1st wife, emigrated to Waterloo, ON by 1851, and died of tuberculosis. No church registered until 1881 when identified as CoE. In 1897, John was employed in Toronto as an upholsterer.
