Foster family

Ailene Ethel McIver Foster, Gary's maternal grandmother, was born in 1894 in Abbyville, a paternal granddaughter of Thomas "Uncle Tommy" James McIver (b. 1837 Bolton, Manchester, England - d. 1917 Abbyville, KS) who was considered one of the pioneers of Reno Co., as per his obit. Tommy had come to America with his father, Isaac, in 1848. In the old country, Isaac was a Methodist minister, he may have been Quaker in Pennsylvania. They resided initially in NYC, then in Patterson, New Jersey for a year.

They then moved to Philadelphia where he resided in 1850 in Chester Twp., Delaware Co., PA, and at some juncture in the "William Penn House (either Pennsbury Manor or the Slate Roof House), until Tommy moved to Illinois in 1855. In 1860, he was residing in Walnut, Bureau, IL and from 1863-1865 in East Grove, Lee, IL. Then he came to Kansas in 1872, settling near Abbyville about 1874. He was led to Christ under the ministry of Dr. Frynar in the mid-to-late 1870's, and affiliated with the Baptist church in Abbyville where he served as a deacon and S.S. teacher for a number of years.

Maxwell "Max" Merle Foster (b. 1889 McCracken, Rush, KS - d. 1936 Abbyville, KS), Gary's paternal grandfather, was married to Ailene in her father's home in Abbyville in 1914, and settled initially on the farm of Lawrence Deck (b. 1871 Leon, Decatur, IA - d. 1959 Hutch., KS), their wedding was officiated by Methodist pastor Frederick Stolz. Lawrence managed a local grain elevator, his father Peter Deck (1850-1920), locally known as "Uncle Pete", was one of the early county commissioners in Reno Co., and settled there in 1874.

William Kilbourne Foster (b. 1863 Malvern, Mills, IA), Max's father, was a son of George Kilbourne Foster (b. 1823 Hamilton Co., OH; m. 1848 Fort Madison, Lee, IA; d. ? California City, Kern, CA). George's father was John Wesley Foster (b. 1799 Baltimore, MD - d. 1865 Miami, Hamilton, OH), son of Absalom Foster (b. 1766 Hereford, Baltimore, MD - d. 1849 Colerain, Hamilton, OH), son of John D. Foster (1737-1826 Hereford, MD), son of Bazaleel Foster (1713-1753 Balt., MD), son of Thomas Foster (b. 1650 Buckton, Yorkshire, Eng. - d. 1710 Balt., MD), son of John Foster (b. 1624 Edlesborough, Buckinghamshire, Eng. - d. 1650+ Salem, Essex, MA) who immigrated in 1635.

Also as per FindaGrave, Jim's paternal grandfather, Likum S. Gillett (1867-1948 Frederika, IA), was a descendant of Jonathan Gillett, Sr. (b. 1609 Chaffcombe, Somerset, Eng. - d. 1677 Windsor, CT), one of three brothers who were among the earliest settlers of Windsor, Connecticut in 1636, having immigrated in 1630 to Dorchester, Mass., as members of a group of Puritans from England on the ship Mary and John.
