History

The Guelph Meeting Room was an exclusive brethren assembly founded prior to 1861, and active thru 1933 as part of the Tunbridge Wells exclusives.

Alumni

Fear family

  • Edwin Wilcox Fear (1816-1895) was born in 1816 in Devon, England, presumably where he was introduced to the Brethren. In fact, by 1841 he was employed as a rigger in Stoke Dameral, an inner suburb of Plymouth. By 1851, he had emigrated to Ontario, Canada and employed as a schoolteacher in Brantford as a schoolteacher, and registered with the census as "Christian Brethren". He relocated to Guelph by 1861, and died in London, Ontario. See Edwin's bio for more on his family.

In 1881, M.M. boarded with the Edward & Mary Stovel family.

Harvie family

Robert Harvie was a bookseller in 1897, living at 501 Yonge St., Toronto with his wife Florence and child. But previously, in 1891 Florence was registered as married, but living with her parents in Guelph.

Hayhoe family

Edward emigrated from England, presumably with the state church, as a missionary to the Ojibway tribe of Indians in the Bruce Peninsula of Ontario and his first time noted of being gathered was in 1861 with the Guelph assembly when Darby was visiting.

  • Susanah Sara Munnings Hayhoe (b. 1854 ON - d. 1921 Toronto, ON), daughter of Benjamin Munnings (1830-1903) & Maria Woodgate Munnings (b. 1828 Necton, Suffolk, Eng. - d. 1918). Benjamin & Maria Munnings were PB as early as 1871, when they resided in Colborne, Huron South, ON.
    • Ralph James Hayhoe (b. 1876 ON - d. 1959 Etobicoke, Toronto, ON). 1st wife: Alice Frances Bickell Hayhoe (b. 1878 ON - d. 1905 Toronto, ON), daughter of George Bickell (b. 1839 Dundas, Hamilton, ON - d. 1919 Toronto, ON) & Mary Jane Ross Bickell (b. 1848 Eng. - d. 1903 Toronto, ON). 2nd wife: Eva Eleanor Green Hayhoe (b. 1878 ON - d. 1969 Etobicoke, ON).

      • Evelyn Frances Hayhoe Martin (b. 1921 Parkdale, Toronto, ON - d. 2009 Etobicoke, ON). Husband: Melvin William Martin (b. 1919 - d. 1979 Etobicoke, ON), son of William Charles Martin (b. 1882 South Shields, Durham, Eng. - d. 1956 Springfield, MO) & Ethel Caroline Bunce Martin (b. 1892 Paddington, London, Eng. - d. 1966 Montreal, QC).
    • Robert Benjamin Hayhoe (b. 1878 Hamilton, ON - d. 1955 Toronto, ON). Wife (@ Montreal, QC): Elizabeth M. Millard Hayhoe (b. 1875 - d. 1961 Toronto, ON). On his attestation papers for WWI, Robert put down that he was born in Cambridge, England, but censuses indicate his parents were in Hamilton during that time. He was employed as a tea merchant in 1914, and a miner in 1917.

      • Arthur Percival Hayhoe (1911-2002 Toronto, ON). Wife (1937 @ Toronto, ON): Dorothy Susands Hayhoe (1911-2004 Toronto, ON), daughter of Ernest William Susands (b. 1879 Frindsbury, Kent, Eng. - d. 1946 Toronto, ON) & Isabella Jane Kimpton Susands (b. 1879 Kent, Eng. - d. 1968 Toronto, ON). Both Arthur & Dorothy were PB at the time of their wedding, but it was officiated by John Gibson "Jock" Inkster, who pastored Knox Presby. Church 1920-1938. Knox later had pastors including Dr. Ian Rennie (1929-2015), prof of Church History @ Regent College & Tyndale who was raised OB in Winnipeg, MB, as well as Dr. Alistair Donald MacLeod (b. 1938).

Stovel family

  • William Stovel +1861+ (b. 1803 Goodwood, Sussex, England), and was living with his family in Guelph by 1861, and identified as Plymouth Brethren. His wife and children were all born in England as well.

    • Edward Stovel +1861-1903+ (b. 1842 London, England - d. 1905 Toronto, ON) served +1903+ as a correspondent at the Guelph assembly. Wife: Mary Anne Turner Stovel +1871-1911+ (b. 1851 Eng. - d. 1930 Guelph, ON). The Turner family naturalized in 1846, immigrating in 1850.

  • Charles Goodeve Tatham +1894-1918 (1854-1918 Guelph, ON) served as a correspondent at the Guelph assembly from 1894-1918.

Tilt family

In 1871, John Tilt's father Francis resided in Galt, ON and was employed as a horse doctor (aka veterinary surgeon). Mary, his 1st wife, emigrated to Waterloo, ON by 1851, and died of tuberculosis. No church registered until 1881 when identified as CoE. In 1897, John was employed in Toronto as an upholsterer.
