Parks family

TIG 1997-9-15: Parks celebrate 50th anniversary: "William and Jeanette Parks of Indiana celebrated their 50th anniversary recently. They were married July 11, 1947, in Dover, Del., by evangelist Eddie Richmond and have resided in Indiana for the past 12 years. Mr. and Mrs. Parks are the parents of two sons: Alan, an evangelist in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Lindsay, a physician in Indiana. They also have seven grandchildren. A scripture text was presented to them by the members of the Indiana Gospel Hall. A private family dinner is planned at a future date."

TIG 2005-3-1: "William Moore Parks, 85, of Indiana went home to be with the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Sat., Feb. 26, 2005. He passed away at St. Andrew's Village after a lengthy illness, one day shy of his 86th birthday. The son of Irish immigrants Joseph and Sara McCahan Parks, he was born Feb. 27, 1919 in Ardmore, PA. The family lived in Ardmore, Northern Ireland, for two years. Mr. Parks graduated from Lower Merion High School and attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

The most important day of his life was Jan. 30, 1941. As a young man of almost 23, he had turned his back on the gospel under which he was raised and brought heartache to his parents and family. But God allowed him to be stricken with a serious sinus infection, which continued to plague him until his death. It put him on his back and caused him to think about his soul. He realized from the Bible that he had sinned against God and that he desperately needed a savior. On that day in January, he realized that when Christ suffered at Calvary, he had died for Bill Parks, and he was born again.

For the rest of his life he lived for the Savior, who had died for him. He married Jeanette Brady on July 11, 1947. After living most of their married life on the Main Line of Philadelphia, they retired to Indiana in Oct. 1985. They had 56 very happy years together. They were faithful members of the assembly of Christians that met in the Bryn Mawr Gospel Hall, as well as the Indiana Gospel Hall later in their lives. He was an elder in both assemblies, faithfully serving the Lord. He owned his own title insurance company, making settlements on hundreds of homes. He built many houses on the Main Line as well, and was one of the first developers of Chesterbrook, a large development near Valley Forge. He also built and owned two office buildings. He and Nettie were renowned for their hospitality. Their homes were constantly to open for friends and neighbors and they were known for their love and care of others.

Surviving are two sons, Lindsay Parks and wife Diane, Indiana, and Alan Parks and wife Carol, Myrtle Beach, SC; six grandchildren: Brian Parks and his wife, Erica, and Kristin Kodman and her husband Jim all of Indiana. Jeremy Parks and wife Michalle, Stanley, NC; Shannon Parnell and her husband Chris; Alan Parks Jr.; and Devin Parks, all of Myrtle Beach, SC; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Carrie; and his wife, who died in Sept. 2003. All were saved by God's marvelous grace... Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday. His son Alan, a full-time evangelist, will take part in the service, with Dale Vitale of Vandergrift and William Seale Jr., of Indiana, both full-time servants of the Lord."

TIG 2003-9-9: "Jeanette Brady Parks, 88, of Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on Sat., Sept. 6, 2003, at St. Andrew's Village. A daughter of Scottish immigrants, John and Annie "Nannie" Fleming Lindsay, she was born Jan. 6, 1915, in the little coal-mining town of Jenner, in Somerset County. Mrs. Parks graduated from Cairnbrook High School in 1932. The single most important event in her life occurred when she was a young woman of 20. She had learned from God's Word, the Bible, that she was a sinner, and that she needed a Savior. She understood the truth of Calvary, that when Christ died on the cross, He was paying for her sins. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior, and from that moment on, was ready for Heaven, and for all eternity.

She and her husband, Bill, were married on July 11, 1947, having 56 very happy years together. She loved to take care of others, and their home was marked by Christian love and open hospitality. For many years, they were in happy fellowship with the Christians meeting in the Indiana Gospel Hall... (Survivor list)... She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, David Brady; her brothers Jimmie and Bobby; and one sister, Lizzie. All were saved by the marvelous grace of God. Friends will be received from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wed., at Robinson-Lytle Inc., Indiana, where funeral services will be held at noon Thursday with her son, Alan, a full-time evangelist, and evangelists Harold Paisley and James Smith, both of Ontario, officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery where her body will await the resurrection, at the returning of the Lord Jesus Christ."

Work family

The Work family originated in the early 1400's in the Orkney Islands, with a long tradition of sailors. The Scottish spelling is Wark, and they have had a castle on the southwestern coast of Scotland on the Solway Firth, in the town of Workington which has been simultaneously claimed by both Scotland and England. It is also claimed that five brothers (John, William, Henry, Alexander & Andrew) left Northern Ireland in 1660, settling in Scotland until 1690, then in Belgium two years, then sailing to the U.S. in 1692, each in their own ship, landing on the Jersey coast. Three settled in Pennsylvania, one to New York, and another to Boston, Massachusetts.

Samuel's great-great-grandfather Alexander Work (1702-1749) was a lifelong resident of Bart, Lancaster, PA, descendants between were from East Mahoning Twp. The earliest in the direct line in Indiana Co., was John Work (1758-1809), who was a Revolutionary soldier, enlisting Sept. 1777 in Capt. Robert Shannon's Co., 1st Batt., Cumberland Co. Militia. He and his brother William migrated from Cumberland Co., to Westmoreland Co., then to East Mahoning Twp., Indiana Co. He was one of the first Justices of the Peace in the township, and one of the first elders in Gilgal Presbyterian. See Work Family History 1690-1969.

Alexander's father was Henry Clay Work (b. 1680 Glasgow, Scot. - d. 1738 Lancaster, PA). Henry was responsible for the construction the year of his death of the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church in Bart Twp., Lancaster Co., on a tract of land conveyed to him by the founding Penn family of Pennsylvania. The edifice is in present-day Quarryville.

She had been in delicate health for some time and for the past two months was confined to her room. Early in life she had united with the Presbyterian church, and so full was she of the love of the Divine Master that her whole life was a willing service in His cause. To know her was to love her and in this community are numerous young hearts heavy with grief at her death. She died peacefully, happily, and almost the last words she uttered, again expressed the great trust in her Savior that her pure young life had evidenced. Funeral services were held n the Presbyterian church at 2 on Monday afternoon. Rev. Dr. Hall conducted the services. He was assisted by the Rev. H.Q. Graham.
