Ministry Reports
1930's
- LOI 1948-7: In a pioneering biography of Samuel Greer (1886-1941), it indicated that in his latter years, he won souls for Christ in El Paso, Houston, San Antonio and Manvel, as "fruitful fields in the Gospel".
1940's

- AA 1941-12:
With Christ: P.C. Doehring, Houston, TX: Letter from Mr. T.C. Bush, Waxahachie, Texas:
Know ye not that there is a Prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel.
"This scripture at once suggests itself to the mind of one intimate with P.C. Doehring on the occasion of his home going, in the 72nd year. On Thu., Oct. 23rd about 3:30 p.m. our beloved brother succumbed to a heart attack and within a few minutes was with the Lord.
It was the afternoon of the day that the 40th Annual Conference was to start with the prayer meeting in the evening, and, as was his custom for many years he had been busy all of the day, his last day on earth, making the necessary arrangements for the conference. By 5 p.m. the news had spread over the city and so reached those local as well as those who had already gathered for the Conference. To one and all it was a great shock. Being apparently in usual health we could scarce believe he had left us.
Our Brother was saved in Chicago, Ill. about 45 years ago [1896?], and shortly thereafter came to Houston, Texas and engaged in the jewelry business. There he came directly into contact with our beloved brother Joseph Jameson. Quickly he embraced the truths held by our brother as to Christ being the center of gathering for His people and at once associated himself with that pioneer of the faith in a small meeting already begun in the home.
Soon a Gospel Hall was secured and from then on through four decades he gave himself, his time, his talents as much as possible to the work of the Lord, the furtherance of the Gospel and the care of the Lord's people. In all of these years in the closest association with brother Jameson his temporal and business affairs all were subordinated to the spiritual. His hospitality was boundless, and those that knew him both of the Lord's servants, as well as the Lord's people, can rise up this day and call him blessed.
On the last Lord's day preceding his home call, Sunday, Oct. 19th, he was at Manvel... 25 miles from Houston... assisting, along with other brethren, in the opening of a new Hall there. He gave a most interesting account of the history of the Houston Assembly since its inception and mentioned the growth extending out to this city. He referred in passing to the fact that out of the four men who first sat to remember the Lord in Houston, he alone was left. It was a fitting testimony, destined to be the last public utterance, of this man of God.
Quite a number of the Lord's servants were attending the conference as well as believers from Texas and other States, so with those who locally love him, the funeral was very largely attended. Bro. Wm. Rae spoke a most solemn and comforting word from Ps. 116:15 to the company gathered at the funeral home, and Bro. T.C. Bush read a portion of scripture and prayed at the grave. So in this simple way we laid the body of this man of God, our beloved brother, till that glad day that will soon come for all of His own.
Mr. Doehring is survived by five sons, and a number of grandchildren, and the Lord's people may well pray that these sons may emulate their devoted father, and thus for themselves adorn, as he did, the doctrine of God their Saviour."
1943
- L&L 1943-6: "Robt. S. Thompson was able to take meetings at Manvel, Texas. He is gaining in health slowly. Mrs. Thompson is seeing a fine interest in the children's meetings being held in the garage in their home in South Houston, Texas."
- L&L 1943-10: "Robert I. Thompson was able recently to have two weeks at Manvel, Texas. The attendance during the first week was very good, but school opening during the second week kept many away, however toward the end there were a good number out again. Majority of children attending were of Italian parentage, and knew little or nothing of the Scripture, so it was good soil for sowing the seed. He is now in a new district west of Fort Worth, Texas, near a war factory. 'Homes have been built by workers and it is a unique opportunity of being first on the ground. Purpose holding open air meetings for about three weeks outside the home of one of the local Christians whose burden for these people brought me here. We look for blessing in this new work.'"
- L&L 1943-12: "John Rankin had meetings during October in Houston, Pineview and Manvel, Texas. After the Conference he went to San Antonio, where he has had three meetings weekly in Kentucky Hall and three with E.D. Dresch in the Mexican meetings. These meetings are in Spanish and a reverent hearing is given to the word spoken. They have three nice buildings."
1945
- LOI 1945-12: Robert Curry, 3225 Charleston St., Houston, TX: "We plod on, occasionally seeing a little blessing in the gospel. We spent last Lord's day with the little assembly in Manvel, Texas, about 30 miles from Houston. They had an all day conference, brethren John Dickson, W.A. Cook (missionary from Argentina and Robt. Thompson, ministered the word. The Christians were helped and a number of strangers heard the gospel."
1946
- LOI 1946-12: Houston, TX: H.W. Dedman: "The 45th annual conference was held in the Houston Assembly Hall, with Pineview and Manvel assemblies cooperating. It proved a time of happy fellowship, over 80 visitors from other aprts attending. The ministry was Christ-exalting and practical in character. Among those who spoke were brethren Roland Hill, Halliday, Rouse, Bush, G. Rainey, L. Rainey, L. Wilson, Hillis, Kessler and Schlief. The weather was ideal and that made things of a physical nature most enjoyable and thus helped make the conference a time of blessing to all."
1947
- L&L 1947-5 & LOI 1947-6:
R.F. Bayles, 5310 Lawton Ave., Oakland, CA: "Since Mar. 24 we have been preaching the gospel and unfolding the word at El Paso, Houston, Pineview, Manvel and Fort Worth, Texas, Assemblies. This week we are having meetings at Dallas. We have found good interest and appreciation, especially in regard to the exposition of the Word. This type of ministry seems to be a much-felt need wherever one labors.
The three-day Easter Conference at Fort Worth was a time of real spiritual refreshing and happy fellowship. The ministry was practical, searching and timely. Assembly order and responsibility was much stressed. An unusual (in our times) feature was the open meeting for ministry each afternoon. Brethren took the platform as they felt led, rather than by designation. This method was felt by many to be very profitable, giving due place to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Brethren sharing this ministry were T. Bush, D. Dunnett, F. Hillis, and R.F. Bayles. The gospel meetings were shared by brethren W. Curry, F. Hillis, and R.F. Bayles. Bro. Kessler gave a very timely and encouraging message to the young people's groups. Ernest Gross gave much help in all these meetings by his spirited song leading... The Lord willing we expect to go to Colorado next week for a season of ministry in Colorado Springs and Denver."
1948
- L&L 1948-2: Leonard E. Brough, 2905 Power House Rd., Yakima, WA: Jan. 5: "On my first visit to Southern Texas, Houston, Pineview, Melrose, South Houston and Manvel (where meetings are now in progress) have been visited. One precious soul professed salvation."
- L&L 1948-3: With the Lord: "T.C. Bush, an honored servant of the Lord, of Waxahachie, Texas, departed on Feb. 7, to be with Christ, whom he loved and served for over fifty years. For more than a year, extreme weakness of body kept him comparatively inactive and at home the most of the time. His going is a distinct loss to the church, and will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends. Leonard Sheldrake of Kansas City, and R. Curry of Houston had charge of the funeral service. The body was laid to rest in the family cemetery at Waxahachie to await the glad and happy days of our Lord's return. A large number of Christians were present from Ft. Worth, Dallas, Houston, Pineview, Manvel and other places, also a host of local friends. He is survived by his widow and son William N. Bush, also a sister, Mrs. Eugenia B. Cox of St. Louis, Mo."
- L&L 1948-7: "F.W. Schwartz (Detroit, MI) has been spending some weeks in the South, with encouragement. Three weeks were spent in Houston, Texas vicinity, including Manvel, Melrose and South Houston. The saints there were appreciative. Also visited were New Orleans and Lafayette, La., in both of which places a good work is being done. Moving northward he touched Dallas, Fort Worth, Oklahoma City, Wichita, Hutchinson, in each of which places God gave help to bring a little encouragement and cheer to His own. Laborers in these fields are few, and should have the prayers of God's people."
- LOI 1948-8: F.W. Schwartz:
"During the last number of weeks I have been circulating in the South, attempting with the Lord's good help, to bring a little help and cheer to His people in little assemblies here and there. Am glad to say that in some of the places visited, definite progress appears to have been made within the last few years.
In Asheville, N.C., the hall has been added to, and there is a good and growing Sunday School work and Gospel effort. In New Orleans, nice contacts are being made through the Center and the work extended. In Lafayette, La., there is a little company appreciative of the Word of God and desirous of lengthening its cords.
In the Houston vicinity three weeks were spent: in the Houston vicinity three weeks were spent: in Houston itself, Manvel, Melrose and South. Melrose has a comparatively new hall and a consistent effort is being made to reach the people of the community. In South Houston a new hall is planned in the near future, with the likelihood of an encouraging start in it, following upon Gospel activity already carried on.
After touching Fort Worth, I called at Oklahoma City, and Wichita. In each of these places new meeting-places have been erected within the last few years, in Wichita quite recently. There seems to be a desire to go on in the ways of the Lord, and an appreciation of ministry given.
Here in Hutchison [sic] the Lord has helped in ministry and it is a joy to see His people going on happily for Him and with each other. But if there is progress, it is still true that 'there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed'. Workers in some of these fields are not plentiful and much prayer should be going up to God on behalf of those who labor in them, that they may be sustained and encouraged."
- L&L 1948-11: South Houston Bible Chapel, South Houston, Texas:
"A new gospel hall has been built at the corner of 11th St. and Spencer Hwy., in South Houston. Those mainly responsible are several brethren who have been in fellowship for many years and live in this section, also a number who have left the sects recently and have been in fellowship for a short time, and others who have been saved at different times in meetings. This meeting has been formed in happy fellowship with the meeting from which they have gone out and with other meetings in this section... this being the third that has thus been formed. The other two are the Pineview and Manvel. (Another new work is going on in a new hall in the Melrose section.)
Those taking part in the ministry on the opening day of Sept. 26 were Mr. Halliday of San Antonio and Brethren Curry and Dedman of Houston, and Robert Thompson of South Houston. The little building was filled to capacity and large numbers were seated outside and were able to hear with the use of loudspeakers. The usual Monday afternoon Children's Bible Hour previously held in Robert Thompson's garage now moves to the Chapel and the first gathering brought in a large number. The building has five classrooms while another two will soon be completed. The correspondent is B.S. Avenell, 600 Sixth Ave., South Houston, Texas."
1949
- L&L & AA 1949:9-10: Houston, TX: "The 48th annual conference of Christians gathered according to Matthew 18:20, in the Houston district, will be held in the Gospel Hall, 2402 Louisiana St., on Oct. 21-23, with prayer meeting on the 20th. This will be a joint conference of all the meetings: Houston, Pineview, Manvel, Melrose and South Houston. Visitors are requested to advise of their coming a little in advance. All will be entertained by the saints as usual. Correspondent: H.W. Dedman, 414 Union National Bank Bldg., Houston, TX."
1950's
1951
- L&L 1951-7: Tom McCullagh, Guthrie, OK: "I went to Houston, Texas, for the opening of of the new hall at Riverview. I enjoyed ministering the Word to them, also at Manvel and in the Louisiana Street hall. There seems to be an ear for God's Word. In July, Leonard Lindsted will join me in tent work in Tulsa, and in August I will work with John Elliott in Guthrie. Pray for us in this tent work."
- L&L 1951-11: Being Assembled: Manvel, TX: "The Assembly carries on a work among children in a nearby district Sunday afternoons. Many children come out and the opportunity to present the Gospel is being used to the utmost."
1952
- LOI 1952-5:
John T. Dickson, Petersburg, VA: "Early this year I had a strong desire to visit the deep South and contact outlying places where workers for the Lord are busy in these lonely fields. Bro. Raymond Zander and I left Atlanta, Georgia, Jan. 31, and stopped at Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, where Bro. Edwin Meschkat has been ploughing his lonely furrow amid opposition for a few years. We had a meeting that same evening, and there was a nice company, among them a Catholic lady who was saved shortly afterwards and is now in the little assembly. Our brother needs our prayers and encouragement.
In New Orleans, a city largely Catholic, Brethren Schlief and Hanna are meeting indifference and opposition, yet are seeking to build a testimony for the Lord. We had a meeting there also. We spent a weekend in Lafayette where Bro. William Walker, with a family from California and a few others, has planted an assembly. They had just opened a small hall and desire the prayers of the Lord's people also.
Our next stop was Manvel, Texas (a village out in the rice fields) where there is a hearty little assembly. After a few days, we began gospel meetings. The interest grew. Even with pouring rain, we had a full house, and there were some conversions. It was cheering to see whole families out every night. We were invited by the school superintendents to speak to the faculty, visitors and students.
Returning, we had a nice visit in Jackson, Mississippi, with Mr. and Mrs. George M. Marshall. The Lord has given blessing there, and a little gathering remembers the Lord."
- LOI & T&T 1952-7:
"When Bro. J.T. Dickson returned with R.M. Zander from Manvel, Texas, where they had seen precious souls saved, he was worn out and in poor health. With Mrs. Dickson, he left April 16 by car for Florida, but they had to finish the journey by train. For some weeks he has been under the care of a doctor who diagnosed his case as diabetes and is treating him accordingly. The Lord's people might join with us in prayer for our brother at this time. W.E. Dancy, Corr., Gospel Hall, Petersburg, Va."
1954
- L&L 1954-8: John Elliott, Springfield, MO: "God willing we commence a special series of Gospel meetings at Manvel, Texas on July 18. Trust we may see blessing in the Gospel, also the saints helped."
- L&L 1954-10: Gathered Together: Manvel, TX: "John Elliott and Edwin Meschkat concluded a four week series in Gospel meetings here with real blessing. Three souls were saved and a couple were restored to fellowship. Previous to this, a young man of 18 years was saved. During the camp season, five young boys from 9 to 13 years received Christ as their Savior. Archie C. Peters, Corr."
1956
- L&L 1956-5: "Leonard Lindsted, Wichita, KS, recently (Apr. 10) held meetings in Manvel, Texas, using his chart Egypt to Canaan. Then also had two weeks in the new work at MacGregor Chapel in Houston, mostly for children, and there was some fruit in the Gospel. Hoping to help locally in Wichita, D.V., until June. Nice interest in the children's work on the north side of Wichita."
1959
- LOI 1959-12: T.R. McCullagh, 411 E. Logan Ave., Guthrie, Okla.: "I spent a few days in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, where the Lord is blessing and souls have been saved. The Fort Worth assembly has more than doubled in the last year and a good spirit prevails among the saints. From here I went to Waco, Texas. A continued growth is seen in the meeting there. Nov. 8, I joined Bro. J. Balsan in meetings at Manvel, Texas."
1960's
1960
- LOI 1960-4: Ray Zander, Richmond, VA: "I was in Manvel, Texas, in March where the Lord richly blessed His Word. I had the privilege of ministering in the Houston area and once again rejoice over the hunger of the Lord's people for His Word. I return to Richmond, Va., for the Easter Conference (D.V.), and hope to find much to encourage there."
1963
- L&L 1963-3:
- "Herschel Martindale, 625 W. Rittenhouse, Houston, TX, continues to minister at Manvel and other nearby Houston assemblies as the Lord enables."
- "O.E. (Pat) Magee, 2216 Buchanan St., N.E., Minneapolis, MN, had three weeks of appreciated ministry at Manvel, South Houston and Pineview Chapels in Texas, during January."
1964
- LOI 1964-10: 2 Adults Saved in Manvel, Tex., DVBS: Lawrence Darling, San Antonio, TX:
"Nine new children came to Sunday school in San Antonio, as a result of the DVBS conducted there. The school was held in the evening, enabling us to have an adult class also. We had so many children (129) on the closing night that we did not have room to invite the parents. However, all parents were invited to a combined Sunday school and DVBS picnic over the weekend.
The second Bible school was held in Manvel, Tex., a small city of 300. Here the Bible school was a great attraction for the mothers who brought their children; two professed salvation during the week. One was a girl of nineteen, the other a former boxer, whose wife was saved last year."
1965
- LOI 1965-3: News Bits: "Tom McCullagh conducted meetings in Houston, Tex., on Jan. 8, and began meetings in Manvel, Tex., on the 10th. A teen-age boy professed faith in Christ in the first meeting in Manvel. Mr. McCullagh wrote that work in Guthrie, Okla., was encouraging."
1968
- LOI 1968-3: Ray Zander, Boca Raton, FL: "I have visited in the Manvel, Tex. area as well as South Houston, Pineview and MacGregor. Mr. J.T. Dickson first took me to Manvel 16 years ago, and from the first visit until the present it has been a fruitful field. Am sowing the good seed in the out islands of the Bahamas, and will remain as the Lord leads. Abaco has been a place of hard plowing, and patient sowing, but the Lord has given the joy of seeing souls won to Him."
- LOI 1968-8:
Robert Thompson, South Houston, TX: "Our Argentine brethren moved out from the old South Houston Chapel two weeks before its closing, moving to a Spanish speaking area and opening a new chapel called Iglesia Christiana Evangelica (Spanish Bible Chapel). In their few months there they have seen much to encourage. Dr. Norman Hamilton visited them recently, renewing former associations with them in Argentine assemblies. Our brethren have increased their weekly Spanish broadcast to six days per week over KLVL, a local Spanish speaking station; good response is reported.
Since the South Houston Bible Chapel moved to its new location, we have doubled our attendance at the 11 a.m. hour. We were blessed at the outset by a visit from Leonard Lindsted and the salvation of a young lad. Recently we baptized four of our young people. We have continued the Monday afternoon "Sunday" school with increasing attendance. This is the 30th year of this class. No handicraft or other usual attractions.. just carried on as if it were a Sunday morning Sunday school.
Recent visiting brethren at Manvel Gospel Chapel included Ray Zander. At the Sunday evening service, three young people were baptized."

1972
- LOI 1972-1: "The saints at Good News Center, Belle Chasse, La. and the Christians at Manvel Bible Chapel, Manvel, Texas unite in commending Mr. and Mrs. Richard Klein to the work of the Lord in Manvel." Signed by nine brethren.
- LOI 1972-6: Literature Crusades: "Miss Laura Booth is commended for the two-year Germany team by Manvel Bible Chapel in Manvel, Texas, and by Braeburn Bible Chapel in Houston."

- LOI 1977-12: Commendations: Mr. & Mrs. Joe Johnson, Sandy Creek Bible Camp, Washington, TX: "Christians gathered in the name of the Lord Jesus at Manvel (Texas) Bible Chapel have commended Joe and Laura Johnson to the Lord's work. The Johnsons are working with Sandy Creek Bible Camp and nearby assemblies."
1979
- LOI 1979:7-8: "For the past two years, Joe and Laura Johnson have served the Lord at Sandy Creek Bible Camp in Texas, commended by the Manvel (Texas) Bible Chapel. Recently the Johnsons resigned from the camp staff and the assembly has withdrawn the commendation, which was no longer applicable. Joe has taken up secular employment in Kansas."
1980's
1982
- LOI 1982-1: Joseph Balsan, Urbandale, IA: Nov. 3, 1981: "I have just returned from sharing in a conference in Oklahoma City with Rob Lindsted, and then some refreshing times with the saints in Manvel and Waco, Texas. Earlier I had two weeks of meetings with a new assembly in Pelkie, Michigan. They meet in homes but got the town hall for the series on Egypt to Canaan. The Lord gave definite fruit. In November, I hope to be in Guthrie, Oklahoma for a series. I value prayer for God's blessing for a series. I value prayer for God's blessing and enabling."
- LOI 1982-2: Manvel Bible Chapel c/o D.A. Booth
- LOI 1982-10: Harold Preston, Lexington, KY: July 28, 1982: "For the last fourteen years Vena and I have been much burdened about fact that there is only one assembly testimony (Louisville) in the state of Kentucky, and have been praying that the Lord would raise up an assembly in central Kentucky. Last fall, in response to an announcement in Interest by Paul Krokenberger, four families got together in Lexington for Bible study and soon began breaking bread on Sunday evenings.
- It seemed to us that the Lord had opened a door and that we should move to Lexington and devote full-time to the Lord's work. We are grateful to the South Houston and Manvel, Texas, assemblies who share this view and are commending us to full-time work in central Kentucky. We moved from Houston to Lexington about a month ago and are now getting settled in our new location. At present we are meeting in George Cowan's home for worship and have opened our home for weekly Bible studies. May we encourage much prayer for this new work as we begin an outreach through personal contact and home Bible study groups. If any interested readers, or someone you know in the area, would like to get in touch with us, please write or phone."
- LOI 1982-11:
- Commendations: Mr. & Mrs. Harold Preston, Lexington, KY: "Two Texas assemblies, Manvel and South Houston Bible Chapels, have commended Harold and Vena Preston to full-time Christian service. The Prestons have been in fellowship in the South Houston assembly for several years. Harold's gift in Bible teaching and gospel preaching has been a blessing there and in the surrounding areas. The Prestons plan to work in a church planting ministry in Kentucky."
- Quotes from Workers: Sept. 2: Harold R. Preston, Lexington, KY: "Last Lord's Day a carload of Christians came from the Louisville assembly to join us for an afternoon meeting. Some also came from Winchester, Wilmore and Pittsboro, North Carolina. Dick Reitske shared some good news regarding their prison ministry, using Emmaus courses. Gordon Linscott brought some words of encouragement. After the meeting we had a time of fellowship over tables of food prepared by the ladies. Most of the brethren stayed for the evening when we gathered to remember the Lord. Please pray for this new work..."
The Prestons also served the Lord in the Philippines for more than seven years. Harold was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII. Harold Renwick Preston (b. 1926 Lexington, KY - d. 2006 Louisville, KY), son of John A. Preston & Ella Marie Purvis Preston. See obit.

- Uplook 2001-8:
Fellowship in the Gospel! "What an encouragement it is to hear of souls being saved and saints laboring together in the gospel! In Manvel, TX, a... co-worker was saved in a series of meetings held by Harry Hamilton. Pierre Trudeau's son, Michel (1975-1998), attended tent meetings in Portage la Prairie, MB. In Washington, GA, the young son of one of the Christians and a man who had just been visited in the neighborhood professed salvation.
These are just a few of the many reports [Uplook has] received throughout the year. Whether in the assembly building, in a tent, in a rented room, on a college campus, at a local festival, or in the downtown street, the glorious message of salvation is being offered and the Lord is blessing!"
