History
Assemblée Chrétienne Bonne Nouvelle is a French open brethren assembly in Quebec City, Quebec. A hive-off of the work at nearby Sainte-Foy, the first meeting of the Assemblée chrétienne Bonne Nouvelle (ACBN), located in the heart of the city, took place in September 1982. The evangelical church throughout Quebec was then basking in the floodtide of explosive growth and the Sainte-Foy assembly was bursting at its seams. Truth be told, differences of opinion among the leadership at Sainte-Foy, so often the case in the establishment of a new work, was also a contributing factor. Following a year and a half of discussion and prayer, two brethren, Jack Kimpel and Marc Routhier together with their families, spearheaded the effort. By the following autumn, others had joined them and the numbers continued to grow.
After meeting in several locations, including the campus of Laval University where it remained for ten years, the assembly moved in 1998 to their present facility in the Nouvo St-Roch district of lower Quebec City. At that time, there were 120 in attendance, many being families with children which made for a large Sunday School. Three years later, the founding leadership had moved away due to differences of opinion relating to vision concerning the direction that the assembly should then be taking.
University students were being reached along with many persons in crisis, thanks to a quality counselling ministry launched early on by James Moore and Ron Pagé. Over the years the assembly has been blessed by a number of educators, artists and other like persons that frequent or live in and around the neighborhood. Not a few being gifted musically, music has always been an important part of the program at Bonne Nouvelle. By 2012, there were some 200 in attendance including adults, children and teens.
Editions la Clairière, occupying the same edifice as that of the assembly, has made a significant contribution to the work in Québec since being launched by James Moore before the turn of the century. More than fifty titles have since been translated into French and published. Fellow-elder, Richard Ouellette, joined the team as graphic artist in 1994. Books were chosen for their ability to stimulate reflection on the pertinence of the Christian faith in face of the challenges confronting the Church in the modern world. Leading authors include, among others, Larry Crabb, John Piper, Ray Bakke, Eugene Peterson, and Alister McGrath.
