J.W.H. Nichols was an author and publisher affiliated with the Grant exclusives. He self-published, as well as via Erie Bible Depot (Erie, [[Pennsylvania|PA), Loizeaux Bros. (NYC, N.Y.), M.R. Johnston Co. (St. Louis, MO, and others.

Early Life

John was born Dec. 23, 1867 at Cheltenham, Glos, England.

  • John Nichols (b. 1842 Bredon, Worcs, Eng. - d. 1920 Upton, Malvern Hills, Worcks, Eng.; bd. St. Peters Church, Powick, Malvern Hills, Worcs, Eng.), employed in 1881 as a Master Tailor, employing 12 men and 3 boys to assist. In 1911, he was retired, and resided in Great Malvern.
  • Elizabeth Nichols (b. 1841 Tewkesbury, Glos, Eng. - d. 1895 Worcs, Eng.)

Grandparents

  • John Nichols (b. 1811 Bredon, Eng. - d. 1883 Cheltenham, Eng.). The family lived in Bredon thru at least 1851. He was employed as a carpenter (1841) then agricultural laborer (1851) in Bredon, and by 1861-1871 as a gardener in Cheltenham.
  • Charlotte Warner Nichols (b. 1813 Slimbridge, Glos, Eng. - d. 1889 Gloucester, Eng.)

Eliza's sister was Emma Evans Johns (1813-1844 Bengeworth), memorial served by curate Thomas Marsden). Both Eliza & Emma were baptized on 11-21-1813 by curate James Knight in the Anglican church in Bengeworth, the medieval structure of which (perhaps dating back to 1605) was demolished in 1870, and replaced with St. Peter's, which John & Sophia were in membership with, including in 1851. John was employed in 1813 as a manufacturer and seller of nails and horseshoes, an occupation known as a Nailer prior to the development of mass produced materials.

  • Beryl Evangeline E. Nichols Birtwhistle (b. 1896 Gower, Glamorgan, Wales - d. 1963 Carmel, Monterey, CA); bacteriologist +1918-1922+ @ Western Laboratory, living in Oakland with her family. In Feb. 1928, she was based at Evesham, England, and traveled from Cristabal, Panama to Plymouth, England.     • Husband: Frank Ernest Birtwhistle (b. 1889 Liverpool Eng. - d. 1971 Riverside, CA). The Birtwhistle family emigrated to Canada in 1912, settling first at Winnipeg, MB, he was working there in 1916 as a railway clerk. He then went to Vancouver, then in 1922 to Los Angeles, CA. In 1930, Frank lived in Santa Barbara with his parents, employed as a commercial artist. In 1950 in Santa Barbara he owned a medical lab where Beryl worked. Parents: George P. Birtwhistle (b. 1862 Chester, Ches, Eng. - d. 1931 Ladner, B.C.) & Mary Edith Todhunter Birtwhistle (b. 1866 Liverpool, Eng. - d. 1935 Woodland, Yolo, CA). George Birtwhistle was a technical teacher in Los Angeles, then the first teacher at the T.J. Trapp technical school. Frank's brother was George Birtwhistle, Jr. (Winnipeg, MB).
  • Amy Margaret Emily Nichols (b. 1898 Meriden, Warks, Eng. - d. 1929 San Mateo, CA); In 1918, she lived with Mrs. Christena M. Nichols. 1919-1920+, she was an office clerk for the Southern Pacific railroad, and a stenographer in 1921.
  • John Edward George Nichols (b. 1899 Jersey, C.I.) employed 1921 in Oakland as a bank clerk. In 1924, he married Renee M. Nichols (b. 1900 Eng., emig. 1908); In 1926 bank teller @ Oakland. A. Peterson & H.A. Keith were two of his bank clerk coworkers who vouched for his petition to be naturalized as a citizen. In 1930, asst. bank cashier @ Burlingame. +1940-1942+ Manager @ Fillmore-Sacramento Branch of S.F., Bank of America; +1950+ Bank manager. +1950-1960+ @ San Francisco.
  • Hugh Nelson Stewart Nichols (b. 1900 St. Peters, Guernsey, C.I. - d. 1961 Victoria, [[British Columbia|B.C.) employed 1921 as a clerk in Oakland. In 1929, Hugh was living at home on Hurlingham in San Mateo, and employed as a salesman for the K.E. Paul Co. insurance agency in Burlingame. Hugh owned the Nichols Realty Co., "Real Estate and Insurance Counselors" which was located at 155 B, San Mateo. In 1940, he and his wife Phyllis removed to Belmont. Wife (1939): Phyllis Deborah Woodward Nichols (1905-1993 Victoria, B.C.), daughter of Arthur Joseph Woodward (b. 1856 Uckington, Glos., Eng. - d. 1936 Victoria, B.C.) & Adelaide Woodward (b. 1861 Tithe House, Knutsford, Ches, Eng. - d. 1944 Victoria, B.C.), who were 1st cousins. Hugh & Phyllis had two children.
  • Douglas Alfred William Nichols (b. 1902 Jamaica - d. 1981 Santa Cruz, CA) - 1960 @ Burlingame, CA; employed 1921 as an electrician. In 1929, living at home in San Mateo. He was affiliated many years with the First Baptist Church of Burlingame, and later what is now Gateway Bible Church of Scotts Valley. Wife: Evalyn Catherine "Evie" Newton Nichols (b. 1912 Norfolk, VA - d. 2011 Boulder Creek, Santa Cruz, CA), daughter of Robert Counsell Newton (b. 1878 Bridgwater, Somerset, Eng. - d. 1957 Orange Co., CA) & Mary White Fleming Newton (b. 1884 Unidilla, Otsego, N.Y. - d. 1956 Orange Co., CA). Daughter: Marilyn E. Duncan (b. 1938 Bakersfield, Kern, CA - d. 1969 San Mateo, CA). Husband: John Duncan.
    • Robert C. Newton was a son of William Newton (b. 1847 Stogumber, Somerset, Eng. - d. 1923 San Gabriel, L.A., CA) & Eliza Jane Counsell (b. 1842 Mark, Somerset, Eng. - d. 1896 Oneonta, Otsego, N.Y.).
    • Mary W. Fleming Newton was a daughter of William Edgar Fleming (b. 1854 Sidney, Delaware, N.Y. - d. 1924 Middlefield, N.Y.) & Lottie Belle White Fleming (1862-1914 Otsego, N.Y.).
  • Raymond G. Frederick Nichols (b. 1903 San Francisco, CA - d. 1966 Placerville, El Dorado, CA). 1940-1966 @ Placerville, CA. Wife (1934 @ Garnerville, NV): Dorothy Ruth Young Westphal-Nichols (b. 1903 Virginia City, Storey, NV - d. 1995 Sparks, NV), daughter of Charles Willet Young (b. 1876 Gold Hill, Storey, NV - d. 1959 Washoe Co., NV) & Rilla Alice Cochran Young (b. 1884 Virginia City, NV - d. 1954 El Dorado Co., CA). Davis who owned two stores that sold Atwater-Kent & Radiola radios, with one location at 93 E. 3rd in San Mateo, and the other at 1230 Burlingame Ave., in Burlingame. In 1939-1940, she was still living with her parents, and was employed as a nurse. Husband (1942 @ Jackson, Independence, MO): Kenneth Raymond McDougall (b. 1904 Salinas, CA - d. 1982 Santa Barbara, CA), son of James Edgar McDougall (b. 1873 Salinas, Monterey, CA - d. 1923 San Jose, Santa Clara, CA) & Mattie Louise Raymond McDougall (b. 1873 Goodwin, Plumas, CA - d. 1969 Palo Alto, Santa Clara, CA). James & Mattie McDougall were married 1942 @ Ann Arbor, Washtenaw, MI. Kenneth was self-employed in 1940 as an attorney in Palo Alto. In 1950, Kenneth & Nora lived in Atherton.

  • Marjorie Maud Mary Nichols Grensted (b. 1906 Bideford, Devon, Eng. - d. 2006 Mount Hermon, Santa Cruz, CA). In 1928, Marjorie visited South Africa. 1960 @ Grover City, CA - Husband: Kenneth Newton Grensted (b. 1907 Monterey Park, L.A., CA - d. 1993 Florence, Lane, OR), son of . In the 1950's, Kenneth founded the Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel in Grover Beach, initially branded the Grensted Funeral Home. He was also a president of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Pismo Beach, president of the Grover City Civic Association, a member of the South County Youth Guidance Council, and of the Grover City Grange. For many years, he was a member of Grace Bible Church of Arroyo Grande, a presently Evangelical Free (EFCA) meeting founded in 1876 as the first Presbyterian gathering in the state of California, and the first Protestant church on the Central Coast. In later years, he was a member of Community Baptist in Florence, and ministered at travel trailer parks throughout the Pacific Coast. Kenneth & Marjorie had two children:

  • Grace Evelyn Joyce Nichols Brockbank (b. 1912 Somerset, Eng. - d. 2004 Beverly Hills, L.A., CA). In 1939, Grace was living at home in San Mateo, and employed as a nurse. +1960-2004 @ Beverly Hills, CA. Husband (1942 @ Monterey, CA): William Rulon Brockbank (b. 1905 Big Cottonwood, Holladay, Salt Lake, UT - d. 1994 Beverly Hills, CA), son of James William Park Brockbank (b. 1874 Cotton, Holladay, Salt Lake, UT - d. 1962 Sierra Madre, L.A., CA).
    • William's paternal grandfather was Isaac Brockbank, Jr. (b. 1837 Liverpool, Eng. - d. 1927 Holladay, UT), and great-grandfather was Isaac Brockbank, Sr. (b. 1805 Bowness, Westmoreland, Eng. - d. 1878 Spanish Fork, UT), the latter of whom was a Methodist turned Mormon in 1843, due to hearing preaching by Parley P. Pratt (1807-1857).
      • Pratt was one of the first of twelve original Mormon "apostles", labeled "the Apostle Paul of Mormonism", a significant early Mormon theologian, and murdered by the estranged husband of his 12th wife. Pratt is also a direct ancestor of Mitt Romney, and Jon Huntsman, Jr., among 30K-50k descendants. He was also among those arrested alongside Joseph Smith in 1838.

It would appear that in 1896, John & Elizabeth Nichols were living at Gower, Glamorgan, Wales, which is where their eldest daughter, Beryl, was born. From +1899-1901+, they lived in a bungalow at St. Martin, Guernsey, Channel Islands. In 1901, Henry McNair (b. 1874 Eng.), evangelized alongside John, with his wife Annie (b. 1878 Eng.), and baby son Henry Jr. (b. 1900 Eng.) There was also a governess there named Eunice Tostevin (b. 1883 St. Peter Port, Guernsey, C.I.). In 1902, they were living in Jamaica, where their son Douglas was born. In 1902, they lived at St. Peters, Guernsey. In 1906, their 2nd youngest daughter Marjorie was born in Bideford, Devon, England.

Wife: Elizabeth Helen Cranston Proudfoot Hole (b. 1885 Ladylaw Hill, Wilton, Roxburgh, Scot. - d. 1977 Watford, Herts, Eng.), daughter of James Proudfoot (b. 1852 Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scot. - d. 1925 Annan, D&G, Scot.) & Joanna Cranston Proudfoot (b. 1855 - d. 1925 Annan, Scot.). The youngest child of the Nichols family, Grace, was born at Somerset, England, and they emigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada from England in June of 1912, then to Victoria, B.C., then and to Oakland, CA in 1916 where they were still in 1922. By 1929, they were living in San Mateo until 1941.

Death

John spent his final years living at Menlo Park, and died on June 16, 1960 at Redwood City, California. E. Sheritt of Oakland, credited in John's obit as the "standing pastor of the Plymouth Brethren Church" officiated the memorial service. Besides John & Dorothy's four sons and four daughters, surviving in 1960 were 11 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
