Sunago Grace Covenant Church, Compton, CA
From BrethrenPedia
Robert Dawson (1927-2014) was in fellowship with Westlawn Gospel Chapel in its early years in the 1950's, and with his wife Rachael, moved to Compton in the Gate Cities region of Los Angeles, California starting a Sunday School work that evolved by 1963 into Compton Bible Chapel which initially met in his home, before moving to Union Gospel Mission.
Oct. 1965 Letters of Interest included a blurb about this development: [Black] Assembly Grows in Compton, Calif.: "Robert Dawson, formerly of the West Lawn Bible Chapel in Chicago, Ill., has been leading a Sunday school and gospel effort among [Blacks] in Compton, Calif. for the last several years. From the first he desired to establish an assembly testimony there. Visitation, and planned dinners and picnics have brought results. Stanley LaMar, who is working hard with the Grace Bible Chapel, the men of the Dominguez Chapel, and Mrs. Housman of Fullerton have helped to encourage him. The work continues under difficult circumstances. For about two and a half years the Christians have been meeting in Mr. Dawson's home, and are now looking for more adequate quarters."
In 1969, the church became affiliated with the Evangelical Covenant group, the first predominantly African-American church in that denomination. It folded in 2008.
