Allsman family

KC Star, KCMO 1964-12-12 obit: "George R. Allsman 81, of 5057 Woodson, Mission, died last night at a nursing home at 4125 Rainbow boulevard, [(now the home of the University of Kansas Endowment)], where he had been a resident the last year. He was born in Montrose, Mo., and had lived in the Greater Kansas City area 70 years. He was the owner of the Allsman Cabinet company [+1910-1941+], at 708 East Thirty-first street, before his retirement. He was a member of Troost Avenue Gospel Hall 60 years. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Florence P. Allsman of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Kathryn Marquette of the home; a son, Harry E. Allsman, San Mateo, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Rey, Albuquerque, N.M.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock Tuesday at the Newcomer chapel, Brush Creek and the Paseo. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery."

Allsman, founder of the Allsman Cabinet Company, 708 E. 31st. Mrs. Allsman was born in Montrose, Mo., and had lived in Kansas City 75 years before moving to Marble Hill in February. She attended the Troost Avenue Gospel Hall and the [[Bible Chapel of Shawnee, KCKS|Overland Park Bible Chapel]. She leaves a son, Harry E. Allsman, San Mateo, Calif., and seven grandchildren..."

Harry & Agnes Allsman's wedding was officiated by William Ely King (b. 1900 Selma, Fresno, CA), pastor (+1934-1940+) of Maywood Baptist, then at 15th & Northern Blvd., Independence, MO. King's father, Charles Henry King (b. 1859 Princeton, IN - d. 1927 Selma, CA) moved to Selma in 1885, several years before it was incorporated, and was a member of Selma Baptist. In 1928, W.E. King was pastoring Michigan Avenue Baptist in KC. He studied at John Brown & William Jewell.

• George Raymond Allsman +1904-1964 (b. 1883 Montrose, Henry, MO - d. 1964 KCKS), son of Marquis DeLafayette Allsman (b. 1846 Sullivan Co., IN - d. 1897 KCKS) & Sarah Ann "Sally" Day Allsman (b. 1850 Morgan Co., KY - d. 1941 Albuquerque, Bernalillo, NM). In early 1862 at the age of eighteen, Marquis enlisted with the 62nd Illinois Infantry where he served in the Civil War thru 1866, later a resident of the Old Soldiers Home in Leavenworth, KS. Sally resided in Albuquerque from 1921-1941.
• Florence Pearl Iman Allsman +1909-1964+ (b. 1885 Montrose, MO; m. 1909 KCMO; d. 1972 Marble Hill, MO), daughter of John Iman (b. 1847 Olivet, South Bend Twp., Armstrong, PA - d. 1910 KCMO) & Henrietta Yockey Iman (b. 1851 Perryton, Bell Twp., Westmoreland, PA; m. 1876; d. 1941 KCMO).
  • Harry Earl Allsman (b. 1911 KCMO - d. 1973 Arnold, Calaveras, CA). In 1940, Harry still resided in KCMO, working for his father as a cabinetmaker. By 1950, he had relocated to Burbank, in Los Angeles, he was employed as a draftsman in the industry of retail store fixtures. Wife (1936): Agnes Grace Clarkson Allsman-Arons (b. 1918 KCMO - d. 2007 Miami, Dade, FL), daughter of gardener Andrew Pollock Clarkson (b. 1886 Douglas, South Lanarkshire, Glasgow metro, Scotland; emig. 1901; d. 1977 KCMO) & Janet "Jennie" Lawson Clarkson (b. 1893 Glasgow, Scot.; emig. 1905; d. 1980 KCMO). During WWI, Andrew was recruited to serve in the CAF in Canada. Jennie Clarkson was a member of Westport Presbyterian in KCMO.
  • Mary Kathryn Allsman Marquette 1914-1964? (b. 1914 KCMO - d. 1972 KCKS). Husband (1932 @ KCMO): John Marquette (b. 1909 KCMO - d. 2000 Mesa, Maricopa, AZ), son of Austin "August" Albert Marquardt-Marquette, Jr. (b. 1875 Germany; m. 1900 Beatrice, NE; d. 1939 KCMO) & Elizabeth "Bessie" Kaminska Marquette (b. 1876 Germany - d. 1970 KCMO). In 1897, Bessie resided in Jefferson City, Missouri. Austin's father was a pastor in Beatrice that year. Austin was self-employed in 1930 as a cleaner. John & Mary's wedding may have been officiated by Charles W. Ross. John & Mary were later part of Overland Park Bible Chapel. Mary was also a member of the City Union Mission Auxiliary. In 1950, they resided in Lawrence where John was employed as a creamery milkman. In 1940, John worked for George's cabinet making shop. His 2nd wife was Emma Marquette (1921-2015)

    • Richard "Dick" Dean Marquette (b. 1934 KCMO). In 1952, Dick was drafted into the Korean conflict, while residing in Lawrence with his family, who were still there in 1956. Wife (1958 @ Danforth Chapel, KU, Lawrence, KS): Deanna Holmes Marquette, daughter of Raymond "Ray" Holmes (b. 1905 Scandia, KS - d. 1993 Manhattan, KS) & Erna Katherine Schwartz Holmes. In 1957, Deanna studied at Kansas State University, and by 1958 at KU with Dick. 1972 @ Prairie Village. Ray Holmes managed Commonwealth Theatre chain theaters in Manhattan and Lawrence from 1931-1979, have moved to Manhattan from Scandia in 1931.
    • John Raymond "Ray" Marquette (b. 1937 KCMO - d. 1992 Mission, Johnson, KCKS) - 1972 @ Overland Park. Wife: Mary Ann Ramseyer Marquette (b. 1940 Lamar, Barton, MO - d. 2021 Springdale, Washington, AR), daughter of Fred Andrew Ramseyer (b. 1914 Nashville, Barton, MO - d. 2013 DeSoto, Johnson, KCKS) & Ruth Arlene Metsinger Ramseyer (b. 1922 Quapaw, Ottawa Co., Joplin MO metro, OK - d. 2017). Fred's parents: Alfred Ramseyer (b. 1872 Switzerland; emig. 1896; d. 1952 Barton Co., MO) & Mary Heiniger Ramseyer (b. 1882 Goodfield, Woodford, Peoria metro, IL - d. 1924 Barton Co., MO). In 1920, Ruth's father, Oscar Elvin Metsinger (1889-1935), was a teamster for the water route in Quapaw, the family resided at 105 Greece St. Fred Ramseyer died at the age of 98, on the day of his 74th wedding anniversary. He was employed with Allsman Cabinet Corp., farming in Jefferson Co., and during WWII at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in Prairie Center (residing in Lawrence). He also worked for the Robinson Gym at KU which was designed by James Naismith, founder of basketball He was a member of First Baptist of Lawrence.

    • Sally Ann Marquette Purcell (b. 1945 KS). Husband (1966 @ KCKS): Howard Wayne Purcell (b. 1944). Howard & Sally's wedding was at Overland Park Bible Chapel, officiated by Paul R. Goring of Colombia. Bridesmaids were Joan McCabe of Lawrence, KS & Ruth Montgomery of Phoenix, AZ. Max Grable of Dallas was best man. Groomsmen were Larry Fryback of Lawrence & Gary Wright of Wichita. Timothy Purcell, brother of Howard, was an usher, along with Alan Marquette. They settled initially in Lawrence, and by 1972 were in Topeka.

Altergott family

Alice Strayer recalls that Jake’s family was from Russia, he was employed as a tailor, and remembers him making the announcements during her era there in the 1940's. His wife Edith worked as a laborer in 1900 for Caleb Baker's awning factory, as did her sister Alice I. Allsman Stark (b. 1883 Junction City, KS - d. 1941 Oakland, Alameda, CA), who was R.C. at the end of her life, a member of St. Anthony's in Oakland. Jake & Edith relocated to KCMO in 1901.

• Edith Edna Allsman Altergott +1949-1967 (b. 1881 Junction City, Davis/Geary, KS - d. 1967 KCMO), daughter of Sgt. John Dryden Allsman (b. 1845 Sullivan Co., IN - d. 1906 Sawtelle, L.A., CA) & Adaline Hooker Allsman (b. 1849 Vernon, Jennings, IN; m. 1866 Shelby, IN; d. 1917 Oakland, Alameda, CA). In 1900, John & Adaline resided in Quindaro, Wyandotte, KCKS. John was employed in 1880 in Junction City as a brick mason. He served 1862-1865 with the 62nd Illinois Inf., Co. H, enlisting in McLean Co., IL and discharged in Chicago. He resided in 1905 in Santa Monica, and his final year at the Sawtelle Veterans Home in Los Angeles.
  • Kathryn Marie Altergott Sommerville (b. 1903 KCMO - d. 2004 Eudora, Douglas, KS). Husband: William "Will" Baker Sommerville (b. 1902 KCMO - d. 1978 Lawrence, Douglas, KS), son of William Charles Sommerville (b. 1874 Wishaw, N.L., Scot. - d. 1931 KCMO) & Jessie Mae Baker Sommerville (b. 1879 Chicago, Cook, IL - d. 1964 KCMO). Jessie was a daughter of Caleb Jason Baker (1840-1918), co-founder of Baker-Lockwood and the Troost assembly. In 1922, William Charles Sommerville was president of Baker-Lockwood Awning, and Will's brother Caleb J. Sommerville was an employee there. See Sommerville family.
  • Ruth Lucia Altergott Armstrong (b. 1904 KCMO - d. 2006 Tyler, Smith, TX). Ruth studied at Northeast High School and Metropolitan Community College, both in KCMO. She also earned an A.B. in 1925/1926 from the University of Kansas, and from the Kansas City Teachers' College in 1927. She served as an instructor at Stony Brook School from 1928-1932, then as their librarian 1932-1940+. Husband (1929 @ Manhattan, NYC, NY): Francis G. Armstrong (b. 1903 Cobleskill, Schoharie, NY - d. ?), son of Charles W. Armstrong (1872-1944) & Nellie Merritt Jamieson Armstrong (1880-1959). In 1910, Charles was principal of the Cobleskill High School. Francis earned his A.B. in 1923 from Colgate Univ., and his A.M. from Columbia Univ. in 1928. From 1923-1925, he was a Latin & German instructor at Worcester Academy, and on the summer faculty in 1924 of the American Students European Tours. From 1925-1940+, he taught Latin & German at Stony Brook, and also served as its Dean 1928-1938+. Ruth resided in Stony Brook until 1998 when she relocated to Tyler, TX. She was a member of Setauket Presbyterian.

In 1952, he and his family were transferred by his employment as an industrial engineer at Procter & Gamble to an office in northern California. In 1934, his job was "timekeeper" at P&G. Bill's birthplace was in Sparta, Illinois and there is a high likelihood that he was in fellowship at the Sparta Gospel Hall there as his maternal grandfather, William Charles Sommerville, Sr. (1849-1918) was a primary correspondent there in 1904.* William Hayward +1930-1949? The company has subsequently been acquired by Bayer. Wife (1931 @ St. Louis, MO): Anna E. Wagner Hayward (b. 1906 St. Louis, MO - d. 2002 St. Peters, St. Charles, MO), daughter of Edward B. Wagner. Their wedding was officiated by Richard Conrad Lucke (1876-1958), German Methodist pastor.

Leask Hayward-Kelly 1929-1949 (b. 1910 Waterloo, Black Hawk, IA - d. 2011 CA), daughter of William Leask, Sr. (b. 1855 South Shields, South Tyneside, Tyne & Wear, Eng. - d. 1940 Dunkerton, Black Hawk, IA) & Alice Ramsay Kerr Leask (b. 1877 Edinburgh, Scot.; m. 1908 Philadelphia, PA; d. 1935 Waterloo, IA). Alice's memorial was held at Western Avenue Gospel Hall in Waterloo, the service officiated by Edgar Greeley Matthews (1869-1960). In 1881, Alice's family resided at 1 East Thomas St. in Edinburgh, possibly where she was born. Her father, John Gordon Kerr (b. 1851 Dalkeith, Lothian, Scot. - d. 1894 Newbattle, Lothian, Scot.), Ruth's maternal grandfather, was employed in 1881 as a house painter, by 1891 as a coal miner, and evidently died in the Lingerwood Coal Pit at the age of 43 after an "explosion of shot", as per Ancestry.com. As per Alice Strayer, when her maternal great-grandmother died in 1884, her grandmother Ruth had to quit school (at the age of 8) to help take care of her father and brothers.
    • Alice Margaret Hayward Strayer 1935-1949 (b. 1935 Kansas City, MO). She attended Kansas Bible Camp, initially about 1945, at a rented location at a YMCA camp near Stafford, Kansas. Husband (1955 @ Sacramento, CA): Ronald John Strayer (b. 1935 S.F., CA), son of Marion Blaine Strayer (b. 1906 Plain City, Darby Twp., Madison, Columbus metro, OH - d. 1994 Santa Rosa, Sonoma, CA) & Victoria Isabelle M. Storman Strayer (b. 1912 S.F., CA - d. 2001 San Mateo, CA). Ronald was raised at Parkside Gospel Chapel in San Francisco, CA. His father, Marion, was employed in 1940 as a linotype operator at the San Francisco Chronicle (founded in 1865). Alice remained in Kansas City 1952-1953 to finish out her senior year at the original Shawnee Mission High School, while residing with her cousin Ruth Sommerville Matthews her husband Wayne.

      • As an infant, Bob resided with three others in foster care in the home of widowed Myra Ann Metzger (b. 1871 Stormsville, Monroe, PA - d. 1950 Alameda Co., CA) and her teenage daughter Pauline (b. 1905 CA). As per his obit, Bob was a third generation lifelong resident of San Francisco, and served as president of the student body of Balboa High School. He earned his B.A. & M.A. from San Francisco State University where he was a charter member of the Sigma Pi Sigma (National Physics) honor society. He later attended Northwestern University & Stanford. He served as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theatre, then the USNR. He then served as a liason between the V.A. and state officials. He taught in several elementary schools, then served as a principal at John Muir, Marshall Annex and Marshall schools.
