Bell family

The earliest known Bell of this lineage on Ancestry.com, with special credit to Ramsey Bould for usage of her tree, was Sir (Knight) Robert Bell I (b. 1490 Thirsk, Yorkshire, England - d. 1584 Norwich, Norfolk, Eng.). His wife was Lady Mary Elizabeth Anderson Bell (b. 1499 Bellasis, Bellingham, Northumberland, Eng. - d. 1555 North., Eng.). Their only (known) child was Sir (Knight) Lord Robert Bell II (b. 1513 Outwell, Norfolk, Eng. - d. 1577 Leominster, Herefordshire, Eng.), who was the Speaker of the House of Commons. His first wife was Lady Elizabeth Winchester Lewes Inkpen Bell (b. 1517 Hertford, Eng. - d. 1603 Lincoln, Eng.).

Their only (known) son was Sir Robert Bell III, Esq., Lord Knight Exchequer (b. 1539 Outwell, Eng. - d. 1577 Leominster, Eng.), also Speaker of the HoC, who died of typhus. Sir Robert III's first wife was Dorothy "Lady Bell" Beaupre Bell (1538-1603 Beaupre Hall, Outwell, Norfolk, Eng.), a daughter of Sir Edmund Beaupre (1502-1567 Beaupre Hall, Eng.) & Lady Catherine Bedingfield Beaupre (b. 1507 Bedingfield, Suffolk, Eng. - d. 1601 Outwell, Eng.). Sir Robert III & Lady Bell had several children, including Sir Knight Edmund Bell (b. 1562 Beaupre Hall, Eng. - d. 1608 South Acre Hall, Southacre, Norfolk, Eng.) who with his wife Anne "Lady Bell" Osborne Bell (1564-1646) also had several children, including Henry Bell I (b. 1591 Southacre, Eng. - d. 1615 Quiddenham, Norfolk, Eng.).

Henry Bell I was the first of the direct lineage to have visited the U.S., to Jamestown, Virginia on the ship "Mary & Margaret", which was a second supply voyage of Capt. Christopher Newport. This run also transported seventy settlers including the first two women to settle in Jamestown, as well as the first non-English settlers. Some of the immigrants were "artisans who built a glass furnace which became the first factory in America", as per the wiki on the supply missions. As per the[from Second Supply (autumn 1608) Wikipedia page with lists of Jamestown colonists, Henry was functioning there as a tradesman from Oct-Dec. 1608, then returning to England.

The year of his death, Henry and his wife, a former Dodson, had one son Henry Bell, Jr. (b. 1615 Norfolk, Eng. - d. 1698 Lancaster Co., VA) who evidently visited the U.S. at least twice with his wife Rebecca Bell (b. 1615) where their two eldest children was born, but the Ancestry tree proposes that Henry Jr. didn't settle in Lancaster Co., VA until 1665. The eldest son was Henry Bell III (b. 1648 Lancaster Co., VA) who was the first of this lineage to be born in the U.S. He and his wife Esther had several children including Roger Bell I (b. 1672 Gravesend, Kent, Eng. - d. 1737 King & Queen Co., VA), who with his wife Margaret were parents of Roger Bell, Jr. (b. 1699 K&Q Co., VA - d. 1774 St. Thomas, Orange, VA).

In 1730 in Orange Co., Va., Roger Bell, Jr. married Elizabeth Jones (b. 1708 Henrico Co., VA - d. 1773 St. Thomas Parish, Orange, VA), their youngest son was Joseph Bell (1742-1823 Orange Co., VA). Joseph married Sarah Elizabeth Henderson (1746-1833 Augusta, Orange, VA), daughter of William Henderson (b. 1700 Scotland - d. 1770 Augusta, VA) & Susanna Logan Henderson (b. 1700 VA - d. 1785 Augusta, VA). Susanna's mother was Catherine McCrockett Logan (1675-1745 Govan, Lanarkshire, Scot.).

Joseph and Sarah's youngest son was Henry Bell, Sr. (b. 1775 Orange Co., VA - d. 1838 Mercer Co., KY, who in 1796 while still in Virginia, married Susanna Atkins (b. 1775 Orange Co., VA - d. 1839 Mercer, KY), daughter of John W. Atkins (b. 1757 Orange Co., VA - d. 1837 Rockingham Co., NC) & Anne "Nancy" Burrus Atkins (b. 1758 Orange Co., VA - d. 1831). Henry and Susanna's sixth child, and middle son, was Henry Clay Bell (b. 1809 Orange Co., VA - d. 1865 Mercer Co., KY), whose 2nd wife (1851 @ Mercer, KY) was Mary Davis Slaughter Burrus-Bell (b. 1816 Mercer Co., KY - d. 1883 Miami, Saline, MO), daughter of Augustine Smith Slaughter (b. 1769 Lexington, Fayette, KY - d. 1845 Harrodsburg, Mercer, KY) & Susannah Fisher Slaughter (b. 1779 Mercer, KY - d. 1829 VA). The eldest child by Henry & Mary (although not either of their firsts) was Philip Madison Bell (b. 1852 Salvisa, Mercer, KY - d. 1902 Triplett, Chariton, MO), who in 1874 in Saline Co., MO married Elizabeth "Eliza" Donabell Millsaps (b. 1853 Miami, Saline, MO - d. 1929 KCMO), daughter of James W. Millsaps (b. 1807 TN - d. 1884 Miami, MO) & 2nd wife Naomi Dredge Millsaps (b. 1823 Wiltshire, Eng. - d. 1863 Miami, MO).

Several of Philip & Eliza's children were active with the KCMR, and all will be listed here, with known active years. It is currently unknown whether Philip Madison Bell or his wife Eliza were in fellowship with the PB, although the fact that Eliza died in KCMO in 1929, and their eldest son William Osborne Bell (1880-1962) was in fellowship with the meeting by 1927, it's possible.

• Cora Naomi Bell Bowman (b. 1875 Salt Pond, Saline, MO - d. 1955 Phoenix, Maricopa, AZ). Husband (1902 @ Triplett, MO): Jesse Clyde "J.C." Bowman (b. 1872 Triplett, MO - d. 1934 Prescott, Yavapai, AZ), son of William David Bowman (b. 1848 Kacey Co., KY - d. 1913 Salisbury, Chariton, MO) & Narcissa Jane "Jennie" Leeper Bowman (b. 1850 Brunswick Twp., Chariton, MO - d. 1906 Salisbury, MO). Cora resided 1940-1955 in Phoenix, relocating there from Triplett. In 1902, at the time of their wedding, J.C. was employed in Triplett as a druggist, and Cora was regarded as "one of Chariton county's accomplished teachers for several years", as per their wedding announcement in the Chariton Courier (1903-1-2). Stephen Oliver Redacre (1926-2011) officiated Cora's memorial was officated by Stephen Oliver Redacre (1926-2011), a pastor with the DoC.
• Martha "Mattie" Elizabeth Bell James (b. 1878 Triplett, MO - d. 1956 Harrodsburg, Mercer, KY). Husband (1901 @ Keytesville, Chariton, MO): Isaiah "Bud" C. James, Sr. (b. 1859 Mitchellsburg, Boyle, KY - d. 1920 Harrodsburg, KY). From 1885-1920, Isaiah operated a livery stable, and was reportedly "owned a string of fine show horses which were shown at the various Kentucky fairs", as per his obit. Mattie was Isaiah's 2nd wife, his first was Sallie D. VanArsdall (1860-1899).
• William Osborne Bell +1927-1952+ (b. 1880 Miami, MO - d. 1961 Walla Walla, WA). Wife (1906 @ KCMO): Letitia Belle DeJarnette Bell (b. 1879 Hardinsburg, Breckinridge, KY - d. 1971 College Place, WA), daughter of James Stewart DeJarnette (b. 1856 Dyer, Breckinridge, KY - d. 1936 Boise City, Cimarron, OK) & Alice Ann Adkisson DeJarnette (b. 1860 Hardinsburg, KY - d. 1935 Boise City, OK). As per his obit, James DeJarnette "gave his heart to the Lord when he was about 19", and was a member of the Union Chapel Methodist church at the time of his death, and had resided in Boise City since about 1906. William & Letitia's wedding was officiated by Thomas Bunyan Ritzinger (1875-1943) who pastored Baptist churches in Missouri and Kansas, and whose son Dr. Thomas Bunyan Ritzinger (1921-1982) followed in his footsteps.

  • Dr. Phillip Osborne "Phil" Bell (b. 1908 Sampsel, OK - d. 1994 Criders, Rockingham, VA) resided for many years in Lawrence, Kansas. He was a mathematics professor at the University of Kansas, and commuted to the meeting room in KCMO. In 1934, Phil married Martha Marie Klassen (b. 1913 Aberdeen, [[Idaho}ID]] - d. 1951 Lawrence, KS, a daughter of Cornelius & Paula Hege Klassen, co-founders of the Aberdeen Meeting Room in Idaho in 1912. Martha died in 1951, at the age of 38, of cancer, and Dr. Bell remained in Lawrence for a time, and in 1953 remarried Vera Jane Allendorf (b. 1925 San Gabriel, Los Angeles, CA - d. 2006 Criders, VA), daughter of John George Allendorf (b. 1895 Chicago, IL - d. 1959 Napa, CA) & Bessie Ina Graham Allendorf (b. 1898 Palermo, Grundy, IA - d. 1985 Fairfax Co., VA), and they eventually retired to Van Nuys, California, and later in Criders, VA.
  • Alice Elizabeth Bell Massey (b. 1910 KCMO - d. 1983 Phoenix, Maricopa, AZ). Husband (1941 @ Snohomish Co., WA): Field William Massey (b. 1901 Omaha, NE - d. 1988 Denton, TX), son of William Robert Massey (b. 1873 Bristol City, VA - d. 1954 Atchison, KS) & Mary Alice Martin Massey (b. 1871 Eveline, Buchanan, MO or Platte Co., MO - d. 1946 Atchison, KS). In 1880, Mary Alice resided with her parents in Atchison Co. +1910-1923+, Field resided @ Atchison, KS with his parents, his father was a foreman for the railroad. In 1925, Field resided at Reeder, Anderson, KS. In 1930 @ Wichita Falls, TX. +1935-1940+ back @ Atchison, KS. 1941-1942 @ Everett, Snohomish, WA where he was serving with the Quartermaster Corps at Paine Field for the U.S. Army. He also enlisted in the Navy, serving WWII 1942-1945. Virginia B. Kimble of Everett, WA witnessed Field & Alice's wedding.

  • Anna Ruth Bell Storrer (b. 1916 KCMO - d. 2005 Santa Ana, Orange, CA). Husband (1936 @ KCMO): Ernest Jacob Storrer (b. 1911 Aberdeen, Bingham, ID - d. 1986 Walla Walla, WA, son of George Jacob Storrer (b. 1885 Germany) & Marie Lina Horsch Storrer (b. 1888 Germany). George immigrated to California as a young man to work for Mennonite farmers, and was instrumental in helping start the Aberdeen Meeting Room in the early 1900's, which initially met in a (now underwater) train station in American Falls, with the Cornelius & Paula Klassen family. He was also in fellowship many years with the Walla Walla Meeting Room.

• Helen Frances "Fanny" Bell Hampton (b. 1886 Triplett, MO - d. 1970 MO). Husband (1912): Arthur Congrave Hampton (b. 1887 Triplett, MO - d. 1981 MO), son of James Preston Hampton (1851-1942 Triplett, MO) & Sarah Mildred Hodgkin Hampton (b. 1859 Winchester, Clark, KY - d. 1929 Triplett, MO).
• James Philip Bell (b. 1888 Triplett, MO - d. 1953 San Bernardino, CA). Wife (1930 @ Oklahoma City, OK): Goldie L. "Bobbe" Peters Bell (b. 1889 AR - d. 1960). James & Goldie relocated to California in 1943, and to San Bernardino in 1949. James was a retired employee of the Santa Fe railroad, and a member of a local Baptist church. Their wedding was officiated by B.M. Nelson of Capitol Hill UMC (1906-2015) in OKC, who was also a founder in 1917 of the Lawton UMC.
• Jesse Grover Bell (b. 1890 Triplett, MO - d. 1970 Lakewood, Cuyahoga, OH). Wife (1915 @ Salina, Saline, KS): Marie "Mamie" Tourtillot Bell (b. 1896 Newton, Harvey, KS - d. 1983 Cleveland, Cuyahoga, OH), daughter of John Kingsley Tourtillot (b. 1862 Sublette, Lee, IL - d. 1933 Newton, KS) & Ida Elizabeth Boyd Tourtillot (b. 1871 Elizabethton, Carter, TN - d. 1959 Newton, KS). John Tourtillot's parents settled on 12th St., in Newton in 1876. He operated a dairy for 15 years, then City Hotel in Newton until it burnt in 1914, then a restaurant on W. 5th St., then from 1917-1928 with Sutorious Baking Co. In 1916, Jesse was residing in Salina, KS and was employed as a salesman for the KCKS branch of the pioneer meat-packing plant Swift & Co.. In 1927, he founded Bonne Bell, a cosmetics firm, in Cleveland, which is best known for their "Ten-Six" lotion, and since 1973, the "Lip Smackers" lip balm. Jesse wrote the forward for a Here's How by Who's Who motivational book that raised over $40k for Boys' Club of America.
• Thomas Spurgeon Bell (b. 1893 Triplett, MO - d. 1983 Placerville, El Dorado, CA). Wife (1915 @ Jefferson Co., KY): Nelle Wortham Bell (b. 1894 KY - d. 1990 Placerville, CA), daughter of Robert Samuel Wortham (b. 1867 White Mills, Hardin, KY - d. 1939 Sonora, Hardin, KY) & Betty Florence Summers Wortham (b. 1861 Smiths Grove, Edmonson, KY - d. Harrodsburg, KY). Nelle was a supervisor in the advertising dept. of the Cleveland Plain Dealer from 1942-1959. Her memorial was officiated by Harley Weldin of Placer Heights Baptist. Thomas & Nelle relocated from Missouri to California in 1979. Thomas was employed as an accountant, and at while in Kentucky was a deacon for Harrodsburg Baptist.
• Richard Bland Bell +1949-1951+ (b. 1895 Triplett, MO - d. 1993 KCMO). From 1918-1919, Richard served in the Army (WWI). He was employed in 1920 as a hotel accountant. In 1940, Richard was employed as a live-in handyman for Dr. Clay Sherman Merriman, Sr. (1861-1950) and his wife Mattie Jessie Barnes Merriman (1862-1955). Dr. Merriman was a MD in KCMO more than 55 years, and with his wife, active with the DoC affiliated Linwood Boulevard Christian Church (now Community Christian). In 1941, Richard worked for the Armour Packing Co., on James St., in KCMO, still there in 1950 as a general clerk.
  • 1st wife (1917-1921+ @ KCMO): Katherine Martha Barnes Bell-Buettner (b. 1899 Jackson Co., MO - d. 1992 KCMO), daughter of Jack Barnes & Minnie May Warner Barnes-Coll (b. 1873 Mattoon, Coles, IL - d. 1963 KCMO). Katherine was honored before her wedding with a reception by Samuel's brother Thomas' wife Nelle, with sixty guests, with assistance from Mrs. H.F. Cole, Mrs. J.G. Bell, Mrs. A.C. Hampton (Triplett, MO), Misses Nina, Annette & Victoria Ledou, Miss Cleo Kirlin, & Misses Christine & Isabelle Hood. Richard & Kathryn were together at least thru 1921 when their daughter Marty was born, but by 1930, Katherine may have moved to Los Angeles to reside at the Westchester Apartment Hotel, employed as a secretary for the film industry, returning to KCMO by 1940 to work as an office clerk, where she had custody of her daughter. In 1942, Katherine married Matthew John Buettner (1894-1979 KCMO), son of barber Henry F. Buettner (b. 1855 Aurora, Dearborn, IN - d. 1932 KCMO) & Katie Peters Buettner (b. 1857 Germany - d. 1944 KCMO). Henry operated a barbershop from at least 1878-1880 at 337 Cutter in Cincinnati, OH, and from 1895-1937, at 42nd St. & Woodland Ave., in KCMO. Henry's father, Heinrich "Henry" Sr. (b. 1819 Maudach, Germany - d. 1887 Cincinnati, OH) was also a barber from when he immigrated in 1854, until at least 1880 in Aurora, IN. Matthew was an auto mechanic for the USGSA before retiring in 1964, and a Baptist.
    • Martha "Marty" Jeanne Bell Shaddox (b. 1921 KCMO - d. 2010 Tulsa, Creek, OK). Husband (1943 @ KCMO): Oliver Dosh "Bud" Shaddox, Jr. (b. 1921 Mt. Pleasant, TX - d. 2020 OK), son of Oliver Dosh Shaddox, Sr. (b. 1888 Newton Co., AR - d. 1955 Mount Vernon, Lawrence, MO) & Janie Lenore Willson Shaddox (b. 1891 Ider, DeKalb, AL - d. 1974 Monett, MO). Janie was a member of First Baptist in Springfield, MO. In 1943, Bud Shaddox was stationed at the naval air base in Bermuda.

Goff Dickson-Bell +1970 (b. 1895 OK), daughter of Jacob Wayne Goff (b. 1868 IN - d. 1931 KCMO) & Sarah Elizabeth Belle Lister Goff (b. 1867 Macon or Clay, Adair, MO - d. 1954 Palo Alto, Santa Clara, CA). Jacob Goff was self-employed +1900-1930+ in KCMO as an interior decorator. Sarah was a member of the UMC, and relocated from KCMO to California in 1952, where her son William had resided since 1947, who inherited the family business. Ethel's first husband was Avery Brown Dickson, Sr. (b. 1893 Wichita, KS - d. 1961 San Bernardino, CA), son of John W. Dickson (1857-1901 Cleveland, OH) & Laura Esther Bowen Dickson (b. 1861 Rippen, WI - d. 1932 San Bern., CA). Also see Dickson family.

Daniels (b. 1851 Brazil, Clay, IN - d. 1915 Bevier, Macon, MO) & Sarah "Willie" Ann Thomas Daniels (b. 1862 DeWitt / Carrollton, Carroll Co. / Chariton Co., MO - d. 1939 Bevier, MO. In 1941, Albert was employed at the Sheffield Station in KCMO for the Sheffield Steel Corp. Her 2nd husband (1941 @ KCMO) was Richard Bland Bell (b. 1895 Triplett, Chariton, MO - d. 1993 KCMO), son of Philip Madison Bell (b. 1852 Salvisa, Mercer, KY - d. 1903 Triplett, MO) & Eliza Donabell Bell (b. 1853 Miami, Saline, MO - d. 1929 KCMO). Avery Jr.'s siblings: Jacob Wayne Dickson of KCMO, Elizabeth Dickson Sackman of Torrance, CA, and Maxine Dickson Ephland of Denver, CO, as per her obit.
