Decatur Meeting Room, GA
From BrethrenPedia
The Atlanta Meeting Room, which presently meets in a home in Decatur (since 1985) was started by 1888 by George Hinman in his home.
In 1890, as per the U.S. Religious Census, there was one PB-III assembly in Fulton Co., likely this one (now in DeKalb Co.), in a rented hall with a max capacity of 100, and with eleven people regularly attending meetings. In 1895-1896, the hall was across the road from the residence of Hinman (669 Marietta St.), who founded the assembly, as well as S. John Duncan.
In the early days, the assembly had several dentists in fellowship who taught at the Southern Dental College and Atlanta Dental College, the first dental schools in the Southern U.S., which merged in 1917 to become the Atlanta-Southern Dental College which in 1944 became Emory University's School of Dentistry until its closure in 1992. The dentists in fellowship included:
- Dr. Percy Thomas Dashwood +1900-1933+ (1861-1943) who taught crown, bridgwork & dental histology +1898-1917 @ Atlanta Dental College then 1917-1923+ with the merger.
- Dr. Thomas Philip Hinman +1888+ (1870-1931) who taught oral surgery, orthodontia, porcelain art and x-ray services at Southern 1904-1910 and after the merger became the school's Dean, and taught oral surgery 1917-1922+.
- Dr. Richard Edward Hinman (1859-1919) was a founding professor at Atlanta Dental, teaching physiology & histology 1893-1917, then 1917-1923+ after the merger. Thomas & Richard's father George Hinman (1828-1907) founded this assembly in his home about 1888.
- Dr. Raymond W. Powell +1944-1973+ instructed in crown & bridge techniques at Atlanta-Southern +1921-1923+.
Also four of the Peteet children, whose family was in fellowship in the late 1940's, became notable contributors to modern medicine. And Dr. Kenneth Lowder Reid +1898-1946 (1874-1946) was a general physician, whose daughters Katherine Reid (6-30-1907 - 7-1-1907), Ruth Margery Reid (1910-1996) & Ethel Margaret Reid (1906-1998) were faithful lifelong to this assembly.
