Robert Boyes Edgar was born in 1875 at Throughgate, Dunscore, Dumfries-shire, Scotland to Robert Edgar (b. 1838 Dunscore, Dumfries-shire - d. 1910 Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbright) and Jemima Boyes Irvine (b. 1837 Annan, Dumfries-shire - d. 1926 Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbright), the fifth of seven children.

In 1891, when Robert was sixteen, he was employed with his elder brother John as an apprentice tailor for their half-brother James Creighton of 21 High St., Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbright. By 1901, they were still living with the Creighton family at the same address, and brother John was employed as a tailor, and Robert was employed as a traveling draper.

In 1908, Robert married Janet Elliot in Dumfries. Janet was born in 1871 on Johnstone St., Annan, Dumfries-shire to George Elliot (b. 1831 Canonbie, Dumfries-shire) and Elizabeth Bryson Elliot (b. 1839 Gretna, Dumfries-shire).

At some juncture, Robert owned a draper (cloth) business at 42 High Street in Dalbeattie, advertised as "R.B. Edgar".

  • Harold Edgar (b. June 10, 1913 - d. Aug. 14, 1913)
