History
Groupe Biblique de la Rive-Sud, Longueuil, Longueuil, Greater Montreal, Southcentral Quebec, Canada, is a French open brethren assembly founded in 1972.
This assembly on the south shore of Montréal began in September 1972. Prior to that, prayer had gone up for a number of years, especially on the part of Rolland Labonté, correspondent for the Assemblée française de Rosemont, at that time the third oldest francophone assembly in the province. Before he passed away in June 1969, this brother rejoiced to learn that several couples, while continuing to fellowship at Rosemount as well as at the Assemblée chrétienne Maranatha in central Montréal, were already meeting together for prayer. All of these were already living on the south shore.
With the blessing of the Maranatha assembly, Sunday meetings began in the basement of the home of Jack Harvie. This lasted a few months after which, space was rented in different schools of the area while week night meetings continued in homes. The present facility in Longueuil was purchased in 1979, when it was reported that the assembly was “over 100 strong, with four cells meeting during the week, some 60 having been baptized in the last five years.”
By 1995, three other assemblies had grown out of the Groupe biblique de la Rive-Sud. However, the early years of the present century witnessed a decline and repeated calls for prayer that God would raise up new blood to carry on the work.
God answered prayer. In December 2018, Luc Bauer and his wife Laura were commended to full-time ministry at the local assembly. The letter was signed by Fernand Saint-Louis, Serge Lafrance and Noël Aubut. The latter, though not among the original members of the assembly, has faithfully laboured here since his arrival in 1983. What an example of “passing the torch”.
