History

Le Centre chrétien évangélique La Tuque is a French open brethren assembly in La Tuque, Mauricie, Central Quebec, Canada

A first assembly, Assemblée chrétienne de La Tuque, was begun here in 1950, thanks to visits by brethren from the Cap-de-la-Madeleine and Shawinigan areas. Subsequently, a young man at the Cap who was studying for the priesthood, abandoned his studies and accepted Christ as Saviour. He visited La Tuque to share his new-found treasure with an elderly couple who had previously been very kind to him. At that time the couple, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Loyer, owned and ran a combined restaurant and dance hall. On hearing the Gospel, they believed, accepted the Saviour and transformed their dance hall into a Gospel Hall.

Roland Lacombe, the first French-Canadian to be commended to full-time work among his compatriots, moved here with his family and laboured for ten years until his departure for Drummondville in 1964. The work was then carried on thanks to visits from various brethren.

In the closing months of 1995, a growing difference of opinion resulted in a split and the birth of Le Centre Chrétien évangélique de La Tuque. Ten years down the line, some forty persons were gathering at Le Centre. In the meantime, the original work continued, ultimately passing into the hands of the Pentecostals. The new assembly, in spite of continued efforts to buy or construct a meeting place, has remained in their second-floor rented quarters ever since.
