"Br. McCullough hopes to engage in tent work in the needy state of Maine this summer. A nice work of grace was seen in Maine last year, and there is exercise about following up that work with further meetings. Some of those who were saved last year travel 45 miles to remember the Lord each Lord's day. Some others are awaiting baptism and there still is a good interest among the unsaved. There is a good prospect of a testimony being raised up in this needy state and the prayers of the Lord's people are asked for the work."

"There are but two small assemblies in the State of Maine. Bro. J. McCullough of Bridgeport, [[Connecticut|Conn.]], and I tried a tent in the city of Augusta last year, but with little success. Then had cottage meetings in Madison, about 40 miles to the North, having met some Christians from there. We had splendid attendance from the start and several professed faith in Christ. One man who is a successful farmer and businessman preaches to everyone he meets. There is now a group of ten or twelve who have been carrying on a gospel testimony assisted by a brother from [[Augusta Gospel Hall, ME|Augusta]].

Ministry

1930's

  • LOI 1938-3: Feb. 7, 1938: Hugh Thorpe, Brighton, Mass.: "I am at present in this large State of Maine. It is rather a hard field and little has been accomplished as yet, (as far as assemblies gathered together unto the Lord's Name are concerned). Still it is well to keep at it, and give help where it is needed and I feel the need to help small, struggling assemblies.

This is my 14th year with periodical visits to this State of Maine, both in winter as well as summer, having meetings in homes and in schoolhouses also. As far as I know, there are no assemblies in Vermont, New Hampshire and only one in Maine, until recently when about six Christians near Augusta gathered together to remember the Lord and to conduct a Sunday School. So there is need of young men who are willing to "peddle the Gospel" in these states mentioned."

1940's

  • LOI 1945-9: Hugh Thorpe (Pawtucket, R.I.:

"After 3 1/2 months in Deland, Florida we are now in Riviera, a little place near West Palm Beach. We hope to be here for about two weeks only, as there is not the need here compared to the former place. There are few laborers in this part of the South and fewer in the summer time. Therefore, we have decided to remain here for the summer as well as the winter, and not go to the state of Maine this summer as we have done for a number of years."

  • LOI 1946-9: Hugh Thorpe (Pawtucket, R.I.:

"Since we came north we have labored around the New England states, and have also visited Nova Scotia. Was able to take part in the Pugwash Junction Conference, which was the largest they have had. It was good to meet again a number who were saved 25 years ago when brother John T. Dickson and I had the joy of seeing a real awakening in that section. The hall was so crowded that the Christians were asked to remain outside during the gospel meeting so that the unsaved ones might get a seat.

It is a great yearly event for the scattered Christians of the Province. Some came from New Brunswick, Cape Breton, N.S., Prince Edward Island and various other parts of Nova Scotia. Brethren like Mr. Ansley Goodwin and W.N. Brennen were missed, but it was good to see the younger brethren of the Province taking hold of the work in connection with convening the conference. In years past Mr. John Knox McEwen's voice was often heard at this conference, but he with others are with the Lord, but fruit for God remains. On the way home from Nova Scotia we had a meeting at Moncton, N.B. (where our brother Isaac McMullen makes his home). It was good to be meeting the Christians there again.

The state of Maine is a large and needy state with only two very small assemblies. One in Augusta, which is the capital of the state and another at Westbrook. Surely a good field for godly young men to open up work for the Lord. We had a few meetings in Augusta, Maine. We hear of one young man who is exercised about that needy state. The Lord encourage him and the Lord's people also."

  • LOI 1947-9: Maine:

"Brethren James McCullough of Bridgeport, Conn., and Sam Rea of New Jersey are under canvas at Augusta, Maine. They are seeking to strengthen the little assembly here and preach the Gospel to the unsaved. A needy field. They need our fervent prayers."

  • LOI 1948-2: James McCullough (Stratford, Conn., and Sam Rea (Hatboro, PA:

"After laboring for some time and seeing blessing in Maine, these brethren visited Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. They returned home in December."

  • LOI 1948-7: James McCullough (Stratford, Conn.:

  • LOI 1948-8: Edwin J. Tarp (Boston, MA:

"During June brother Tharp ministered to the saints in Washington, D.C. and in the five assemblies in Baltimore, MD. Later he expected to spend some time on the northern coast of Maine."

  • LOI 1948-9: Samuel J. Rea (Hatboro, Pa:

"There are but two small assemblies in the State of Maine. Bro. J. McCullough of Bridgeport, Conn., and I tried a tent in the city of Augusta last year, but with little success. Then had cottage meetings in Madison, about 40 miles to the North, having met some Christians from there. We had splendid attendance from the start and several professed faith in Christ. One man who is a successful farmer and businessman preaches to everyone he meets. There is now a group of ten or twelve who have been carrying on a gospel testimony assisted by a brother from Augusta.

A couple got saved last year, whose home is conveniently located on the main highway, and where most of the meetings have been held. They were delighted to let us pitch the tent this year quite near their home. We feel thankful for the way being thus opened for the furtherance of the Gospel. This is our second week in the tent and we are much encouraged by seeing quite a nice number of unsaved attend almost every night. Last night was the largest meeting we have had and God was speaking we could feel. The man I referred to is one of a large family who are scattered over this territory and has quite an influence among them. We hope to see a real work done."

  • LOI 1948-10: Samuel J. Rea (Hatboro, Pa.) & James McCullough (Stratford, Conn.)

"When we last heard, towards the end of August, these brethren were in their seventh week of tent meetings in Madison, Maine. The weather has been cold and they found it necessary to use an oil stove to make the tent comfortable. In spite of this, the attendance has been encouraging, although there has been prejudice and opposition because of those who were saved last year being baptized and received into fellowship in Augusta, 40 miles away. Several are concerned and seem near the door of salvation. The brethren look for their salvation before the tent is taken down."

  • LOI 1949-6: David Leathem, Truro, N.S.:

"During the past winter I have had the privilege of visiting several cities and towns ministering the word and preaching the gospel. Those included Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto in Canada and Westbrook and Madison in Maine."

"With Brother Stultz we drove to Westbrook and remained there for several meetings, seeking in a simple way to bring words with regards to the person and work of the Holy Spirit to the attention of the believers. From Westbrook I went to Madison with Brother Clark McClelland and we shared the ministry there. Later with Brother Fred Thompson and his wife from Augusta I spent an evening, returning home to Nova Scotia after an absence of two months."

  • T&T 2012-12: "Isabel Macdonald of Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, on October 8, age 72 years. Isabel was born in Inverness, Cape Breton Island and raised in Blues Mills. She was saved in 1960 at a Bible Conference in PEI and shortly after was aware that God was calling her to missionary service in Venezuela. In January 1967 she moved to Puerto Cabello to work in a home for the aged where she labored for the last 45 years. As a young woman her courage was displayed in the challenge of learning a new culture and language. In later years she was able and willing to share her wealth of life experience with younger ones. She was characterized by a confidence in her God and a love for her Venezuelan and Canadian families. Her last trip home to Cape Breton was very shortly followed by her home-call into the presence of her Lord and Savior. She is survived by three sisters, two brothers, and many nieces and nephews. The funeral was taken by David Swan and Albert Hull, with John Turkington (Venezuela) and her brother Calvin giving eulogies. Fred Bartlett and James Thompson (Augusta, ME) took part at the grave. “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord … that they may rest from their labors” (Rev. 14:13)."
