Ministry News

1952

An article on p. 14 of The Herald-News reported on an objection by the assembly to a nearby tavern attempting to open. More Objections to Tavern License: "Two more objections were received Tuesday by the Passaic Board of Commissioners to an application for a tavern license at 35 Broadway... the board had received objections last week from the Christian Assembly, a religious group which meets at 29 Broadway, and 21 storekeepers in the Broadway block between Prospect and Grove streets. Tuesday's objections came from Lee M. Skolkin, who has a law office at 38 Broadway, over the proposed tavern, and the Elmwood Conservatory of Music, which has studios in the same building. The board also received a letter from J.J. DeVries, president of the Christian Assembly. Last week, Edward Rubinstein, counsel for the applicants said there was a question in his mind if the Christian Assembly could qualify as an objector with a church standing. DeVries said the group's church position was classified by the federal government in its Census of Religious Bodies as Plymouth Brethren. According to DeVries, the group has 100 adherents in this vicinity."
