History

Today’s Westend Bible Chapel in Ville Lasalle was formerly known as Draper Avenue Gospel Hall. This was an amicable split from the St. Antoine Street Meeting. For a time, the work was known as Grace Gospel Chapel while meeting in the Notre Dame de Grace (NDG) sector of the city.  According to Goody Campbell, the Draper Avenue assembly undertook a Sunday School work at Côte-Saint-Luc led by Percy Duguid. In a letter written by the correspondent, James Moss, we learn that this outreach was begun in September 1957 at Northview School in the Lakeside Heights area.

Breaking of Bread began in December 1957 in a local community hall in the same district with Gospel meetings scheduled to begin there in September of the following year. In 1960 the assembly sold their building at 5867 Cote St. Antoine Road, corner of Draper Avenue in NDG, and for the following seven years met in “a number of different places including private homes, the Y.M.C.A., a store front and a room above a store.”1 Their newly-constructed meeting place was dedicated on February 12, 1967, taking the name Cote Saint-Luc Bible Chapel. In 1984 the assembly moved to Lansdowne Avenue in Westmount under the name of West End Christian Fellowship.

Civil pastors include Joseph Irving Duguid (1942-), Fred McCleave (1942-), Henry Ralston (1958-), Murdo Mackay (1958-1963), Dr. Brian P. Sutherland (1963-), S. Ian R. McIver (1966-1971), Philip Thomas McKnight (1970-1972), Goodwill (Goody) Campbell (1972-) who came to this assembly in 1960. Joseph Irving Duguid was the first General Secretary of the CBCQ, being one of the petitioners for its judicial establishment.
