Kosin family

In 1930, Wes resided with his parents at 1114 Seventh St., San Fernando, California, raised Presbyterian. At the time, his parents rented a room to an assistant dentist single mother named Ollie Munn (b. 1897 AR) and her daughters Charlotte Munn (b. 1924 CA) & Marian Munn (b. 1928 CA). From 1935-1940, he resided in Na-Au-Say, Kendall, Illinois. He had left the Presbyterians due to increasing modernism, and he joined the IFCA which had him pastoring the Bensenville Bible Church in about 1942. Then while serving the Army, Gladys moved the family to Wheaton, to 321 E. Union. When Wes returned from the Army, he took a pastorate at Clearing Bible Church, which was near the Midway Airport where he used to take his family on walks on Sunday afternoons.

While at Clearing, his son Fred gave his life to the Lord while a young teenager. At some juncture, Wes was introduced to Pacific Garden Mission where he accepted a job as an assistant superintendent (under Harry Soldeneer). One day, about 1951, when he was taking the train from Wheaton to PGM, he was reading his Bible next to the window, and a couple blocks from Bethany Chapel, Don Taylor entered, then editor of Letters of Interest, sat down next to him and they started talking about the things of the Lord, and he invited Wes to visit the Chapel where he became excited about New Testament principles being practiced, and the family started attending there.

In the early 1950's, he developed a concern for Cook County Jail as it had a Catholic & Jewish chaplain, but not an evangelical one, and he started scanning the arrest reports in the newspaper looking for men to visit, which he then did, and eventually the warden asked if he would like to share an office with the other chaplains, eventually getting his own, and he was commended by the Chapel in 1953.

In 1959, he and Gladys relocated to Wyoming to serve the Shoshone Indians, where they did translation work, and he remained until 1980 when Gladys was in poor health, they moved to Florence, SC to be near family and assist with Community Bible Fellowship. Wes placed Scriptures on highway billboards, newspapers and in the yellow pages of phone books, and had a 15 minute radio program. Sometime after Gladys' death in 1987, he moved to Hayward, California where he remained until he died in 1995.

Lane family

As per Just As I Am, p. 65-66, Billy Graham recalled: "As for my initial homesickness, the Lane family soon came to my rescue. Dr. Mortimer B. Lane taught courses in government and economics at the college. Before that, when he was in government service, he and his wife and their seven children lived in Switzerland. Quite well-off, they entertained students in their large, comfortable Victorian home near the campus. They welcomed me as one of their own. Early on Sunday mornings, the Plymouth Brethren, they hosted a small local assembly in their house. I began to attend that quiet communion service with students from other churches."

Streater family

BG @ JAIA (p. 72): "In more ways than one, [Ruth Bell Graham] was one of the belles of Wheaton campus. This I learned during my first term from a fellow I met at the Lane home, Johnny Streater. To pay his way through college, Johnny ran his own trucking service. For a price, he would haul anything in his little yellow pickup. I gladly accepted his offer of work at 50 cents an hour and spent many afternoons at hard labor, moving furniture and other items around the western Chicago suburbs.

Johnny was a little older than I and had been in the Navy before coming to Wheaton. He had a vision for the mission field and felt that God had called him to serve in China, where he intended to go as soon as he graduated. He told me about a girl in the junior class, one of the most beautiful and dedicated Christian girls he had ever met. Sounded like my type. I paid attention.

One day we were hanging around in our sweaty work clothes in front of Williston Hall, the girls' dorm, getting ready to haul some furniture for a lady in Glen Ellyn, the next town over, when Johnny let out a whoop, "Billy, here's the girl I was telling you about", he said. "It's Ruth Bell." I straightened up, and there she was. Standing there, looking right at me, was a slender, hazel-eyed movie starlet! I said something polite but I was flustered and embarrassed. It took me a month to muster the courage to ask her out for a date.

The Christmas holidays were fast approaching, and the combined glee clubs were presenting Handel's Messiah. One day in the library in Blanchard Hall, I saw Ruth studying at one of the long tables. Johnny Streater and Howard Van Buren urged me to make my pitch to her right there. The expression of the librarian at the desk turned to a frown as we whispered among ourselves. Undaunted, I sauntered nonchalantly across to Ruth and scribbled my proposal for a date to the concert. To my surprise and delight, she agreed to go.

That Sunday afternoon was cold and snowy. With Ruth Bell sitting beside me in Pierce Chapel, I did not pay much attention to the music. Afterward we walked over to the Lane house for a cup of tea, and we had a chance to talk. I just could not believe that anyone could be so spiritual and so beautiful at one and the same time!"

John's maternal grandparents, Oscar Alonzo Hurlbut (b. 1845 LeRay, Jefferson, Watertown / Fort Drum metro, NY - d. 1943 Baraboo, WI) & Ella "Nellie" L. Meriton Hurlbut (b. 1853 Portage, Columbia, WI - d. 1932 Baraboo, WI), were with the Methodists of Madison, WI in 1932. The Hurlbut name is well-known among the TW-exclusives, especially in Ontario, Canada. Oscar was the 2nd last remaining Civil War veterans in Barboo, a member of the 49th Wisconsin Infantry. An ancestor, Gideon Hurlbut (1729-1823) was a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

Their line of the Hurlbut family were early American settlers, as Lt. Thomas Hurlbut (b. 1608 Chippenham, Wilshire, Eng. - d. 1671 Wethersfield, CT) who evidently emigrated in 1635 to marry Sarah Elizabeth Nye (b. 1618 Eng. - d. 1678 Weth., CT), and to be a soldier at the fort in Saybrook, CT under Englishman Lion Gardiner (1599-1663), who founded the first English settlement in New York, that same year (1635) in Long Island. A descendant of Lion was Julia Gardiner Tyler (1820-1889), 2nd wife of the 10th President of the U.S., John Tyler (1790-1862), noted for being the first president to succeed another (versus being elected), as William Henry Harrison died a month after taking office, of pneumonia. See The Hurlbut Genealogy for more details on the life of Thomas Hurlbut.

JAIA (p. 67): Billy Graham writes, "On Sunday evening, December 7, 1941, someone told me that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. I had no idea where Pearl Harbor was, I had never heard of it. Then, on my way from the Tab back to my room, I heard from a newsboy hawking a special edition of the Chicago Tribune that the United States was at war with Japan.

I got in my car and drove over to the Lane house. Students and friends who gathered there on Sundays were usually up on all the latest happenings in the world. As I entered the front door, Howard Van Buren met me and told me the grim story of Japan's surprise attack on our naval base."
