Batterton family

  • Jim Batterton, Jr. +2007-2023+, son of James Clifford Batterton I (1920-1998 Waterbury, CT) & Adelaide Elizabeth Kogut Batterton (b. 1921 Windsor, CT; m. 1949 Hartford, CT; d. 2012 Torrington, CT). James I was a son of William Batterton (b. 1882 Wexford, ROI - d. 1974 Wyckoff, Bergen, N.J.) & Jane "Jennie" McCormack Batterton (b. 1882 Longford, ROI - d. 1974 Terryville, CT). William & Jennie also resided at Preston, Lancashire, England. Adelaide was a daughter of Stanley Kogut (b. 1888 Lwarczuw, Austria (Warsaw, Poland?); emig. 1904; d. 1924 Granby, Hartford, CT) & Mary Piteka Stark Kogut (b. 1894 PA - d. 1992 Chicago, IL); William Batterton was, for many years, a correspondent for the assembly at Waterbury for over 50 years, he was saved in 1901, and received in the Waterville assembly in 1915, as was his wife, Jennie, who was saved in 1905 at Longford.

It may be noted that Herbert Gladstone Dobson (b. 1905 Mohill, Leitrim, ROI - d. 1981 Evergreen Park, Cook, IL) resided with the Batterton family at Plymouth, CT in 1930, being a nephew of William Batterton. Herbert was employed as a commercial electrical appliance salesman, having emigrated in 1927. He was later a notable itinerant preacher, in fellowship with Palos Hills Christian Assembly, and in 1943 married Irene May Boyd (b. 1915 Chicago, IL - d. 1969 Oak Lawn, IL), employed as an optometrist in Chicago in 1950. Irene was a daughter of Hugh Boyd (b. 1888 Newtownards, Co. Down, N.I. - d. 1955 Chicago, IL) & Margaret Matilda "Maggie" Aicken Boyd (b. 1890 Randalstown, Co. Antrim, N.I.; m. 1914 Scrabbo Hall, Newtownards, N.I. - d. 1970 Chicago, IL).

Hugh was employed in 1920-1940 with a tent & awning store in Chicago (Caleb J. Baker's???). Irene had one sibling, Wilfred John Boyd (b. 1923 Chicago, IL - d. 2015 Rest Haven Home, Grand Rapids, MI), whose first wife was Lucille Honeyball Boyd (1923-1967). Hugh & Margaret were also in fellowship at Palos Hills, Margaret was saved in her early teens at meetings held by J. Stewart in Randalstown, N.I. and came to Chicago shortly afterward. Hugh was saved in 1905, emig. to Chicago in 1909, in fellowship with what was then the Alberta Assembly, now Palos Hills.

McGrath family

Jack served as a correspondent from 1975 until his death, succeeding his father-in-law, Alexander Pizzo. His father was a sizer in a hat shop in 1930. His grandfather, Christopher, was employed as a hostler (services locomotive engines) in Springfield, MA in 1900, then upon relocating (by 1901) to Danbury, a chaffer in the anthracite industry in 1910, a coner (a machine operator who mats fur fibers for hat felt) for a hat shop in 1920 in Danbury, then a dipper for a silver plating company in 1930.

  • John Thomas "Jack" McGrath, Jr. +1975-2002 (b. 1925 Danbury, CT - d. 2002 New Milford, CT), son of John Thomas McGrath, Sr. (1901-1976 Danbury, CT) & Ellen Agnes Nolan McGrath (1900-1969 Danbury, CT). Grandson of Christopher T. McGrath (b. 1869 Ireland; emig. 1890; d. 1945 Danbury, CT) & Bridget "Bizzie" Durkin McGrath (b. 1874 Ireland; emig. 1894; m. 1899; d. 1943 Danbury, CT), and John Joseph Nolan (b. 1854 Wicklow Co., IE - d. 1929 Danbury, CT) & Ellen Doran Nolan (b. 1864 Carlow Co., IE; m. 1880 IE; emig. 1882; d. 1904 Danbury, CT).

Mitchell family

  • Alexander Sim Mitchell (b. 1891 Fraserburgh, Scot.; emig. 1910; d. 1975 Pawling, Dutchess, N.Y.), son of George & Anne Sim Mitchell. Alexander was employed 35 years as a supervisor in NYC with the United Fruit Co., now Chiquita, producer and distributor of South American bananas. Member of the 73rd St. Assembly for 60 years. Resided in Woodside, L.I., NYC 1922-1967, and summer residents of Whaley Lake, NY 1932-1969.
  • Alice Annetta Brown Mitchell (b. 1891 Londonderry, N.I.; emig. 1910; d. 1969 Amawalk, Westchester, N.Y.), daughter of Robert Brown (b. 1856 Co. Donegal, Ire. - d. 1919 Manhattan, NYC, N.Y.) & Mary McClintock Brown (b. 1853 Glasgow, Scot. - d. 1909 Londonderry, Ire.).
    • WiS 1969-6: Dan., CT: "Our dear sister Mrs. Mitchell was recently "called home" to be with the Lord, we do not have dates. One of the Brown family of Londonderry, North Ireland, she was saved as a result of tent meetings of brethren Bradford, David Oliver, John Bernard and John Rankin and received into the Argyle Road Assembly at Londonderry, N.I. 62 years ago. In 73rd St. Assembly in New York for many years until moving to Connecticut. Remember her husband in prayer and her sister, Mrs. David Slater of the Midland Park Assembly who is the only surviving member of the Brown family."
      • David Slater (b. 1890 Portknockie, Banff, Scot. - d. 1977 West Milford, N.J.), son of David Slater (b. 1863 Seafield, Banff, Scot. - d. 1949) & Margaret Stuart Legg (b. 1856 Seafield, Scot.). Lived @ Midland Park 1954-1976. Wife: Sarah Brown Slater (b. 1888 Gortin, Co. Donegal, N.I. - d. 1986 San Antonio, TX).

  • Georgina Victoria Mitchell Olsen (b. 1917 NYC, N.Y.). Husband: E. Wilbur Olsen (b. 1914 NYC, N.Y. - d. 1970 Danbury, CT), son of John C. Olsen & Margit Lindberg Olsen. Wilbur was a retired chief marine engineer for the NYC Fire Dept, and 1968-1970 an electronics engineer for the Ben Russ Corp. in Ridgefield, CT.
  • Sarah Mitchell Denton (b. 1918 NYC, N.Y. - d. 1991 New Milford, Litchfield, CT). Retired teller @ Pawling Savings Bank. 1941-1991 @ First Pawling Baptist Church. Husband (1940): Arthur B. Denton (d. 1968), son of Van Ess Denton & Ellen M. Denton.
  • Alice Annetta Mitchell Jude (b. 1920 Woodside, L.I., NYC, N.Y. - d. 2019 Raleigh, N.C.). Husband: George Frederick Jude. George & Alice founded Camelback Bible Church in Paradise Valley, Phoenix, AZ.
  • Ruth Isabel Mitchell (b. 1922 Woodside, L.I., N.Y. - d. 2015 Clemmons, Forsyth, N.C.). Husband (1947 @ Queens, N.Y.): Alexander J. Mitchell.
  • Alexander Sim Mitchell, Jr. (b. 1924 Woodside, N.Y. - d. 2012 Raleigh, N.C.). Member of Greystone Baptist Church. Wife (1966): Shirley Mitchell.

Pizzo family

Alexander & Rose's children were all born in Danbury, with the exception of Antonette. Alexander was naturalized in 1918 at Camp Devens, MA. Rose's naturalization in 1938 was witnessed by Antionette R. DeFlumeri & Josephine Gigliotti, both of Danbury. Alex was self-employed in 1930 as a building contractor. His eldest brother was also named Alessandro, but died at the age of 5 in 1893.

  • Alessandro "Alexander" Joseph Pizzo 1928-1980 (b. 1896 Deliceto, Foggia, Puglia, Italy; emig. 1903; d. 1980 Danbury, CT), son of Antonio Pizzo (b. 1866 Italy - d. 1937 Danbury, CT) & Maria Michela Alesandra Frate Pizzo (b. 1858 Deleceto, Italy - d. 1950 Danbury, Italy).
    • WiS 1977-1: Terryville, CT: "Bre. Alves and Dobson gave help here recently, the former going on to Boston and home. Bro. Dobson had a meeting with the saints in Brookfield following. Bro. Pizzo of Brookfield Assembly has not been too well recently. Prayer valued for this brother (Formerly the Danbury Assembly) who has been a standby to the saints for years."
    • T&T 1981-2: "Alexander Pizzo of Brookfield, CT on October 7, age 84. Our esteemed brother was saved in 1928 through the efforts of Rocco Cappiello. He was baptized and received into the fellowship of the assembly at Danbury (now Brookfield). He was a faithful shepherd and was correspondent of the assembly for many years. The funeral service was taken by Frank Tornaquindici, with Matthew Brescia speaking at the graveside."

      • T&T 1963-8: Danbury, CT: "Our sister, Joanne Pizzo went to be with Christ on May 29th at the age of 25. A condition of anemia from which she had suffered since childhood, finally took her home. She was saved at the age of 11 and was in the small assembly in Danbury, Conn., for the past three years, where she was largely responsible for the commencement of a Sunday School. Walter Gustafson preached the Word and Fred Hill and Matthew Brescia also spoke at the funeral home."
      • WiS 1963-8: Dan., CT: "Our dear young sister Joanne Pizzo went to be with the Lord May 29th., aged 25. Saved when 11 and in this small Assembly the past three years, during which time she commenced a Sunday School Class. She leaves her father and mother and five sisters in the assembly. She has left a bright testimony. She had been invalided for year. Titus 2:13."
