McNicol family
WiS 1957-2: Fallen Asleep: Los Angeles: Our dear brother Duncan McNicol went home to be with the Lord Dec. 31st. He was 91 years of age, saved 63 years. Resided formerly in Seattle, of later years here in fellowship in Jefferson Blvd. assembly."
Hattie Hadley McNicol was a descendant of Leonard Headley (b. 1645 Manchester, England - d. 1683 Elizabeth, Union, NJ) & Sarah Diamond Line Headley (1649-1684 Elizabeth, NJ). Leonard apparently immigrated with his brother John, and was self-employed as a weaver and owned a saw mill, according to Gen. & Mem. History of the State of New Jersey, Vol. 2. It also claims that Leonard came over from England before 1664, landing at Boston, and went from there to Connecticut, then to Long Island, and in 1664 "became one of the Elizabethtown associates". According to this source, he settled five miles west of there in what was referenced as Headleytown (in tribute to Leonard), now Union Twp., NJ.
A family tradition states that "two brothers, tanners and curriers by occupation, came from Manchester England, about 1665. John Hedly, one of the brothers located himself at New Port, R.I. at the first settling of the place about 1665. The name of the other brother and where he located is not positively known, but may have been Leonard Headley, pioneer of the New Jersey Headleys, who located at first, perhaps somewhere in Connecticut, and later at Elizabethtown, N.J., whither he came with Sir George Carteret in 1665..." Sarah's father was Thomas Diament Deming Line (b. 1613 Colchester, Essex, England - d. 1683 Wethersfield, Hartford, CT.
- Duncan McNicol (b. 1865 Anderson, Glasgow, Scotland - d. 1956 Los Angeles, CA), son of Duncan McNicol (b. 1840 Lochgilphead, Argyll, Scot. - d. 1935 North Platte, Lincoln, NE) & Jane F. McKenzie McNicol (b. 1843 Dalziel, Lanarkshire, Scot.). Orange was a son of Stephen Hadley (b. 1781 Monmouth, NJ - d. 1868 New Baltimore, Macomb, MI) - d. Elizabeth "Betsy" Mary Owen Hadley (b. 1788 Salisbury, Litchfield, CT - d. 1832 Randolph Co., NY).
- Harriett "Hattie" J. Hadley McNicol (b. 1863 Howell, Livingston, MI; m. 1897 Chicago d. 1950 L.A., CA), daughter of Orange Emmons Hadley (b. 1816 Carroll, Chautauqua, NY - d. 1903 Redford, Wayne, MI) & Sarah Burnett Hadley (b. 1834 Pleasant Valley, Dutchess, NY - d. 1915 Ann Arbor, Washtenaw, MI)
