Fisher family
The Fisher family ancestry were longtime members of the Baptist church in Solebury Twp., Bucks, PA. Lewis' grandfather, Henry Fisher (1824-1872), was a Civil War vet.
Occupationally, Lewis was a retired chief of the Civil Service Commission's Retirement Division, instrumental in "building up the entire Government retirement system". After his retirement, he became vice-pres. and general counsel for the National Assoc. of Retired Civil Employees, which he served until his death, which assisted in getting favorable legislation passed for retired federal employees. He came from his birthplace in Trenton, New Jersey in 1900 to work in D.C. in clerical for the Civil Service Commission, then secretary of the 4th Civil Service District 1904-1924, superintendent of the Field Force 1924-1928, then Chief of the Div. of Appointments 1928-1930 before becoming head of the Retirement Div. which he served until his retirement. He graduated in law from National University, and long practiced law with offices at 1416 F St. NW.
At the time of his death, he was a member of "Plymouth Brethren Chapel", Fourteenth St. & Pennsylvania Ave. SE where he had been a S.S. superintendent and a Bible teacher for many years. He was president of the Greenwood Hills Conference Association, president of the board of directors of the Gospel Mission, a member of the board of directors of both the American Mission to the Jews, and the Christian Businessmen's Committee, and a member of the Washington Bible Institute. He served president of the Federal Club, member of the District and American Bar Assoc., and an honorary member of the Panama Canal Society.
Lewis & Emma's daughter Dorothy married Carleston Mansfield Long (1897-1973), a maternal descendant of Moses Porter Snell (b. 1839 North Brookfield, Worcester, MA - d. 1902 D.C.) & Mary Cordelia Hallock Snell (b. 1841 New Haven, CT - d. 1925 D.C.).
Moses taught mathematics in 1862 at the Burr & Burton Academy in Manchester, VT. Later that year, he became a Civil War vet, see A Historical Record of the Soldiers and Sailors of North Brookfield for detail on his military record.
The last year of the War, he served as the Superintendent of the Freedmen's Bureau in D.C., having captained an African-American combat regiment. After the War ended, he studied theology at Amherst and Hartford Theological Seminary. In Hartford he chaplained (1869) at the YMCA, then becoming a Presby. pastor. In 1870, he was ordained as an evangelist in North Brookfield, and became a missionary around D.C. from 1871-1878. From 1873-1876 he was employed a clerk for the IRS, then 1876-1878 as a financial agent for the YMCA in D.C., then 1879-1888 as a collecting and distributing agent for the Washington City Bible Society.
Moses' father Thomas Snell (1809-1893 North Brookfield, MA) pastored, and his grandfather was Dr. Thomas Snell (1774-1862), among the founders of [Amherst College, and the third pastor of the First Congregational of North Brookfield, which is currently a member of the theologically conservative CCCC. Moses' emigrating ancestor was another Thomas Snell (b. 1634 Fillongley, Warwick, Eng. - d. 1724 Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA), settling in the U.S. in 1650.
The elder Thomas' son Josiah Snell (1674-1753) married Anna Alden (1678-1705) who was a granddaughter of John Alden, Sr. (b. 1598 Harwich, Essex, Eng. - d. 1687 South Duxbury, Plymouth, MA), charter member of the Plymouth Colony that arrived on the first voyage of the Mayflower. Alden's daughter Sarah married Alexander Standish (1625-1702), son of colonist Myles Standish (1584-1656).
- Lewis Horn Fisher +1929+ (b. 1875 Trenton, Mercer, NJ - d. 1950 Suitland, Prince George's, MD), son of Ira Fisher (b. 1849 Lumberville, Solebury, Bucks, PA) & Jane "Jennie" Fisher (b. 1852 NJ).
- Emma W.B. Freas Fisher +1929+ (b. 1871 Woodbury, Gloucester, NJ), daughter of Daniel J. Freas (b. 1820 - d. 1898 Salem, NJ) & Susan Tatem Freas (b. 1833 Philadelphia, PA; m. 1856 Salem, NJ; d. 1913 D.C.). Daniel farmed near Woodbury, NJ, then was employed in 1880 in Trenton as a (Baptist?) "city missionary". He may have pastored First Baptist of Trenton. Susan Freas was a daughter of Capt. Samuel Tatem.
- Mary Ray Fisher Fentiman (b. 1898 Trenton, NJ - d. 1992 D.C.). Husband (1920 @ Brookland, D.C.): Sidney James Fentiman (b. Sittingbourne, Kent, Eng. In 1920, Mary was employed as a typist for the War Dept. Wedding was by Dr. H.W.O. Millington in the Fisher home.
- Ruth Martindell Fisher (b. 1901 D.C. - d. 1997 Richmond, VA). In 1930, Ruth was employed in D.C. as a bank secretary, while living with her parents.
- Dorothy Freas Fisher (b. 1902 D.C.). Husband: Carleton Mansfield Long (b. 1897 Harrington, ME - d. 1973 D.C.), son of Joseph Mansfield Long & Eliza Carroll Snell Long (b. 1868 New Haven, CT; m. 1888 D.C.; d. 1943 D.C.). In 1942, Carleton was employed in D.C. as an accountant. He was an enlisted WWI vet (1918-1919).
- Emily Jeanette Fisher (b. 1903 D.C. - d. 1927). Emily died in an auto accident, memorial was officated by G.G. Johnson (Immanuel Baptist), O.D. Dietz (Brookland Baptist) & J.E. Davis (Brookland Church).
- Dr. Paul L. Fisher (b. 1907 D.C. - d. 1977 Greenville, SC). In 1940, Paul lived in Riverside, California, and was employed for KPRO radio station. In 1950, he was a biology professor at Furman University. Paul's gravestone has Rom. 8:28 & Nahum 1:7. Wife (1933 @ D.C.): Helen Shafer Clifton-Fisher (b. 1906 Middletown, Frederick, MD - d. 1994 Homewood Retirement Center, Williamsport, MD). Helen was employed many years with the General Acceptance Corp., Frederick, MD, and clerical for her husband at Furman U. She was a member of Pendleton Street Baptist in Greenville (now West End Baptist).

- possibly Winfield Scott Schroeder (b. 1847 York, PA - d. 1935 Philadelphia, PA). According to his obit in the York Daily Record, he was a printer by trade, and also employed by the IRS, and eleven years in the document room of the house of representatives. In 1930, he was employed as a clerk at the U.S. Capitol. In 1872, he was a printer in Cincinatti, Ohio. Wife: Helen E. Reiffe Schroeder (b. 1858 Union Twp., Adams, PA - d. 1923 Gettysburg, PA), daughter of Abraham Reiffe (b. 1806 - d. 1894 Hanover, York, PA) & Mary Jane Reiffe (b. 1822 - d. 1850). Children: Carrie Marie Ziegler Schroeder (b. 1891 Gettysburg, Adams, PA)
