In 1940, Joseph Clarkson's mother Bettie resided with her daughter Edith F. Clarkson (b. 1888 Scot. Co., MO - d. 1975 Hutch., KS) in Hutch. Edith was a high school teacher in Memphis from 1910-1920+. It's also worth noting that the Clarkson family was in Memphis, MO among the earliest settlers, as Henry's father died there in 1845 when the area was new. Dalry, Ayr, Scot.; m. 1887 What Cheer, IA; d. 1952 Des Moines, IA). Grace was a longtime member of Central Gospel Chapel (which supports the probability that she was in fellowship at the Hutch chapel. She also resided in Davenport, IA in 1951.

He was farming near Lakin Twp., Harvey Co., KS in 1951, and had relocated to Hutchinson by 1953. No children. They resided in Branson, MO for a time, relocating finally to Newton in 1990, where Malinda resided at the Friendly Acres Retirement Community until her homegoing in 1994.

Ada was widowed thrice. Her 1st husband was Henry "Hank" Tobias Boese (b. 1915 McP Co., KS - d. 1974 Elmdale, Chase, KS), son of Tobias Jacob Boese (b. 1887 Leliwa, Poland - d. 1957 Newton, KS) & Carrie Buller Boese (b. 1886 Halstead, KS - d. 1956 Newton, KS). In early 1950, Richard Burson co-officiated a joint memorial at the First Mennonite Church in Hutch., alongside Rev. L.A. Habegger. The two being buried were Leslie's 1st mother-in-law (Lena Becker), and Lena's daughter Laurine Becker Koehn. Laurine's children included Innes Koehn (Malinda's nephew) who raised his family at the Hutch assembly in the early 1950's. See Koehn family.

Koehn family

1950 @ 223 E. 3rd, Hutch., KS; 1953 @ 1115 N. Washington, Hutch., KS. 1958 @ 1224 East Ave. B.

LOI 1949-8: Richard Burson, Hutch., KS: "Last week a young man named Innes Koehn and I finished our Daily Vacation Bible School. We had an enrollment of 94 with an average attendance of 74."

LOI 1950-3: Richard Burson, Box 3, Hutch., KS: "Last August a family named Koehn began to come over to Hutchison [sic] from Halstead, 20 miles away, each Lord's Day. They seemed to enjoy the meetings and were faithful in attendance. January 1st they were on their way to the hall for the gospel meeting they ran into a truck loaded with 2 1/2 inch pipe. Mrs. Koehn and her mother were both killed, and Mr. Koehn is in a hospital with two broken collar bones, compound fracture of right arm, chest bones broken, and he has coronary thrombosis and suffers from shock. I had the funeral at Halstead for the two women. It was large. There must have been many hundreds of people there, many of whom have not the gospel where they go. We trust that the gospel given then may bear fruit. There are five boys in the Koehn family. The mother and grandmother are in heaven, and the father is in the hospital and may never again be able to earn a livelihood. The prayers of God's people for this family are sincerely requested."

Piros family

Nicholas "Nick" Jim Pirovolicos "Piros" was born on Ikaria Island in the Aegean Sea southeast of Greece. He and his wife Opal raised their children in Scott City, Kansas where he owned the "Car Cafe". The Scott Republican reported in Jan. 5, 1922, "Nick Piros, the Car Cafe cook and proprietor, on west Fifth St. showed us a wedding anniversary cake, yesterday, that he baked for one of the Mexican boys, in honor of his first wedding anniversary. The cake was sure a fine looking piece of pastry and shows that Nick knows his business..

In 1950, Nick's son Jimmy and his wife Rachel, and their two toddler sons, resided on N. College in Scott City. Jimmy was employed washing cars at the local Conoco filling station, and Rachel was a homemaker. He had previously served 1942-1945 with U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Albert T. Harris. In July of 1951, they had been living at 310 E. Bigger in Hutch., and were moving to South Hutch. By 1952 (thru 1957), they were residing at 1312 E. Ave. B in Hutchinson, which was several houses east of the Burson house, and the children were "very occasionally" attending the chapel. In 2013 when I heard about these boys from Dan Burson, the impression was that their surname was spelled "Pirate", perhaps given as such to assist with pronunciation challenges.

Jimmy died that year in 1952, leaving a young (27-year-old) widow Rachel to raise their two small children. By 1958, they had relocated to 510 E. 7th Ave. (+1958-1963+), and Rachel was employed as a notary public at First National Bank. For 24 years, she was also employed as a legal secretary for firm Rauh, Thorne & Robinson. In 1971, she was serving as treasurer for the Reno-McP Legal Secretaries Association. She had two siblings, John Boss of Geronimo, OK and Mary Boss Stonehacker of Riverside, CA. Rev. Harold Canaday officiated Rachel's memorial, she was a member of the First CotN.

From +1910-1920+, Rachel's father John Boss was farming three miles south of Texico, Curry, N.M., and regarded as a pioneer of that community. In 1925, he was a check clerk for the Santa Fe railway in Wellington, KS, where he was still employed in 1941 (AT&SF), with the family residing in the latter year at 403 South C. His parents were Johann "John" Boss, Sr. (b. 1856 Switzerland) & Rachel Ann Cole Patton-Boss (b. 1850 Jonesville, Lee, W.V.; m. 1881). In 1868, Rachel Cole Boss was a charter member of a management team for the PSFES, a Presbyterian society that sought to assist in the schooling of girls in impoverished circumstances. John Boss Sr. first came to the U.S. at the age of 16, on the Vandalia, porting at New Orleans. In +1880-1882+, he was a farmhand in Milam Co., Texas.

As per his obit, Jimmy was a salesman with Foss Used Cars, an employee of Dillons in Ark City, and a member of Faith UMC. In 1973, Tommy was working for Nationwide Exterminating Co. @ 302-B N. Main St., in Hutch., founded by Arthur G. "Hucklebuck" Moye, Jr. (1949-2007) as the third Black exterminator in Kansas, and the first west of Manhattan. Moye came to Hutch in 1948 to manage the Stamey Hotel (now Landmark Apts.), then was the owner of the Ebony Lounge on S. Main for a few years, then employed by Graber "Cream O'Gold" & Jackson dairies before founding the exterminating company. In Tulsa, he was employed as a warehouse clerk. See Tommy's [obit].

Preston family

The Bursons would transport "Grandma Preston" to every meeting (Sunday morn & eve, Wed. eve) in their blue 1951 Studebaker, and Dan (as a child) would regularly walk her into her house to ensure that her house hadn't been broken into and to protect her from being attacked, where she lived at 755 E. Ave. F. Her son John moved her about 1955 to California, but she came faithfully to the chapel for many years before that.

In 1873, Minnie's father William was residing in Osage City, and married Margaret Wise of Coffey Co., the wedding was officiated by Charles S. Martin. In 1880, the Robinson family resided near Lebo in Coffey Co., KS, William was a coal miner, likely the Nodaway coal bed.
