Heney family

The Heney family was originally from Northern Ireland, and historically Presbyterian, and many descendants reverted to such later, as well as Anglican. Early in their marriage, Charles & Bridget Heney spent 1810-1812 in Quebec City, Quebec, then returned to their home country a few years, then were in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence, NY in 1833, and settled in Ottawa (Bytown) by 1836.

  • Charles Heney +1889? (b. 1809 Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland - d. 1889 Carleton, ON) He was registered as Presby. most of his life, but his death notice identified him as "Christian". He died of "Canadian Cholera".
  • Mary "Bridget" Uprichard Heney +1871-1888 (b. 1809 Co. Down, Northern Ireland - d. 1888 Ottawa, ON). In the 1871 census, she was identified as "believer in Christ", then later PB.
    • John Heney 1871-1891+? (b. 1836 Ottawa, ON - d. 1912 Toronto, ON) left the PB by 1901.
    • Margaret Heney +1871+ (b. 1840 Ottawa, ON - d. 1923 Carleton, ON) left the PB by 1881.
    • William George Henry Heney +1871-1915 (b. 1845 Ottawa, ON - d. 1915 Carleton, ON). W.G. was a traveling itinerant who preached at the memorial of Stuart Domer Biden (1844-1905) in Medford, Oregon, previously of the assembly in Chicago. See BTP's digital library for 15 mentions of him, including his writings on the Feasts.
    • Mary Anne Heney Warwicker +1871-1901+ (b. 1845 Ottawa, ON - d. 1913 Danford Lake, QC). Husband (1876 @ London, Eng.): Frederick Spurge Warwicker (b. 1845 England - d. 1927 Carleton, ON).
      • Charles Frederick Warwicker +1881-1931+ was an accountant in 1921, and manager of a department store in 1931. Wife (1909 @ Ott., ON): Jessie McLeod Fowkes +1881-1931+, daughter of Thomas Fowkes +1881-1891+ (b. 1840 Redditch, Worcestershire, Eng.; emig. 1860; d. 1924 Burtonville, Monteregie, QC) & Emma Elizabeth Gray Carey-Odell-Fowkes +1881-1891+ (1858-1941 Lacolle, Monteregie, QC). In 1891, Thomas Fowkes clerked for a flour shop in Ottawa, associated with the assembly there since 1881 or earlier. By 1901, his first wife had left him (I think) and he had remarried a Methodist widow, and became a pastor in that denomination.
  • Mary Ann Johnston Warwicker +1881-1896 (1877-1896 Ottawa, ON)
  • Mary Lily Sarah Warwicker (1879-1880 Ottawa, ON)
    • Sarah Jane Heney McIntosh +1871+ (b. 1849 Ott., ON - d. 1914 Vancouver, BC). Husband (1871 @ Christchurch Anglican, Ott.): Dr. James McIntosh (b. 1838 L'Orignal, Prescott, ON - d. 1891 Vankleek Hill, Prescott, ON), son of James McIntosh (b. 1802 Perthshire, Scotland - d. 1889 Vankleek Hill, ON) & Elizabeth "Betty" Fraser McIntosh (b. 1810 Killin, Perth, Scot. - d. 1894 Vankleek Hill, ON). The elder McIntosh family was lifelong Presbyterian, but by 1871, Dr. McIntosh & Sarah were PB, perhaps attending the longtime meeting in nearby Clarence (in Prescott & Russell Counties), down the road from Hawkesbury where they lived. There were also brethren living elsewhere in the area, including Bearbrook, L'Orignal, Riceville and Vankleek Hill. Hawkesbury is also about halfway between Ottawa and Montreal. After Dr. McIntosh's death in 1891, Sarah attended a Presbyterian church for awhile, but by 1901 she had moved to Montreal where she was in fellowship with the meeting there. By 1911, she had moved again to Vancouver, where she had become Anglican, and died shortly after. They had five children, one died in infancy, and the remaining four all left the Brethren in adulthood, but it's notable that their son Hamish Heney McIntosh (1879-1950) became a medical doctor in Vancouver, and a grandson Hamish William McIntosh (1920-1998) of a different son, also entered the medical field.

Hipp family

  • Edmond Gregory Hipp +1908-1910? (b. 1851 London, Eng. - d. 1910 Ottawa, ON), son of John Henry Alexander Hipp (b. 1815 St. James Westminster, Mid., Eng.) and Amelia Ann Skrymansher-Keynston Darnell Hipp; 1896 @ Bedford Meeting Room, QC;
  • Ida Helena Wilson ? (b. 1855 Jersey City, NJ - d. 1938 Ott., ON)
    • Evelyn Gertrude Hipp Beacham +1908-1910+ (b. 1904 Ott., ON - d. 1979 Perth, ON). Husband (1929 @ Ott., ON): Roland Beacham (b. 1904 Headington, Oxford, Eng. - d. 1972 Perth, ON).

Hyland family

  • William John Cecil Hyland +1933+ (1889-1944)

Hayhoe, Harold co-officiated the memorial service for Sarah Jane Wills King (1878-1952) who was nearly lifelong in fellowship with the Rideau Ferry Meeting Room.

Nihil family

In a 2020 KLC Tidings review of Letters of J.N. Darby. Supplement: Correspondence with G.V. Wigram (Vol. 1: 1838-1855 & Vol. 2: 1856-1878), it is noted Darby's amazement while in Ottawa finding Micky Nihil there among the Brethren, a fellow he remembered as a young lad in 1828-1829 when he was ministering in Carhue, as one who they employed to "fetch mail from the post office" during an era when JND was receiving death threats from an agrarian society known as the "White Boys" as well as from certain Catholic leaders.

JND writes in Vol. 2, p. 187: "I was glad to find him a saint. I remember his family well: his father was the first person to whom I made myself understood in Irish, when very ill and the priest would not come. I remember my joy of his (reply in Irish, "tuigim sin"), I understand that, when I told him of Christ the true high priest." The aforementioned (and quoted from) volumes are available from the PBCC's "Bible and Gospel Trust.
