Allsman family

KC Star, KCMO 1964-12-12 obit: "George R. Allsman 81, of 5057 Woodson, Mission, died last night at a nursing home at 4125 Rainbow boulevard, [(now the home of the University of Kansas Endowment)], where he had been a resident the last year. He was born in Montrose, Mo., and had lived in the Greater Kansas City area 70 years. He was the owner of the Allsman Cabinet company [+1910-1941+], at 708 East Thirty-first street, before his retirement. He was a member of Troost Avenue Gospel Hall 60 years. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Florence P. Allsman of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Kathryn Marquette of the home; a son, Harry E. Allsman, San Mateo, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Rey, Albuquerque, N.M.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock Tuesday at the Newcomer chapel, Brush Creek and the Paseo. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery."

Allsman, founder of the Allsman Cabinet Company, 708 E. 31st. Mrs. Allsman was born in Montrose, Mo., and had lived in Kansas City 75 years before moving to Marble Hill in February. She attended the Troost Avenue Gospel Hall and the [[Bible Chapel of Shawnee, KCKS|Overland Park Bible Chapel]. She leaves a son, Harry E. Allsman, San Mateo, Calif., and seven grandchildren..."

Harry & Agnes Allsman's wedding was officiated by William Ely King (b. 1900 Selma, Fresno, CA), pastor (+1934-1940+) of Maywood Baptist, then at 15th & Northern Blvd., Independence, MO. King's father, Charles Henry King (b. 1859 Princeton, IN - d. 1927 Selma, CA) moved to Selma in 1885, several years before it was incorporated, and was a member of Selma Baptist. In 1928, W.E. King was pastoring Michigan Avenue Baptist in KC. He studied at John Brown & William Jewell.

  • George Raymond Allsman +1904-1964 (b. 1883 Montrose, Henry, MO - d. 1964 KCKS), son of Marquis DeLafayette Allsman (b. 1846 Sullivan Co., IN - d. 1897 KCKS) & Sarah Ann "Sally" Day Allsman (b. 1850 Morgan Co., KY - d. 1941 Albuquerque, Bernalillo, NM). In early 1862 at the age of eighteen, Marquis enlisted with the 62nd Illinois Infantry where he served in the Civil War thru 1866, later a resident of the Old Soldiers Home in Leavenworth, KS. Sally resided in Albuquerque from 1921-1941.
  • Florence Pearl Iman Allsman +1909-1964+ (b. 1885 Montrose, MO; m. 1909 KCMO; d. 1972 Marble Hill, MO), daughter of John Iman (b. 1847 Olivet, South Bend Twp., Armstrong, PA - d. 1910 KCMO) & Henrietta Yockey Iman (b. 1851 Perryton, Bell Twp., Westmoreland, PA; m. 1876; d. 1941 KCMO).
    • Harry Earl Allsman (b. 1911 KCMO - d. 1973 Arnold, Calaveras, CA). In 1940, Harry still resided in KCMO, working for his father as a cabinetmaker. By 1950, he had relocated to Burbank, in Los Angeles, he was employed as a draftsman in the industry of retail store fixtures. Wife (1936): Agnes Grace Clarkson Allsman-Arons (b. 1918 KCMO - d. 2007 Miami, Dade, FL), daughter of gardener Andrew Pollock Clarkson (b. 1886 Douglas, South Lanarkshire, Glasgow metro, Scotland; emig. 1901; d. 1977 KCMO) & Janet "Jennie" Lawson Clarkson (b. 1893 Glasgow, Scot.; emig. 1905; d. 1980 KCMO). During WWI, Andrew was recruited to serve in the CAF in Canada. Jennie Clarkson was a member of Westport Presbyterian in KCMO.
    • Mary Kathryn Allsman Marquette 1914-1964? (b. 1914 KCMO - d. 1972 KCKS). Husband (1932 @ KCMO): John Marquette (b. 1909 KCMO - d. 2000 Mesa, Maricopa, AZ), son of Austin "August" Albert Marquardt-Marquette, Jr. (b. 1875 Germany; m. 1900 Beatrice, NE; d. 1939 KCMO) & Elizabeth "Bessie" Kaminska Marquette (b. 1876 Germany - d. 1970 KCMO). In 1897, Bessie resided in Jefferson City, Missouri. Austin's father was a pastor in Beatrice that year. Austin was self-employed in 1930 as a cleaner. John & Mary's wedding may have been officiated by Charles W. Ross. John & Mary were later part of Overland Park Bible Chapel. Mary was also a member of the City Union Mission Auxiliary. In 1950, they resided in Lawrence where John was employed as a creamery milkman. In 1940, John worked for George's cabinet making shop. His 2nd wife was Emma Marquette (1921-2015)

      • Richard "Dick" Dean Marquette (b. 1934 KCMO). In 1952, Dick was drafted into the Korean conflict, while residing in Lawrence with his family, who were still there in 1956. Wife (1958 @ Danforth Chapel, KU, Lawrence, KS): Deanna Holmes Marquette, daughter of Raymond "Ray" Holmes (b. 1905 Scandia, KS - d. 1993 Manhattan, KS) & Erna Katherine Schwartz Holmes. In 1957, Deanna studied at Kansas State University, and by 1958 at KU with Dick. 1972 @ Prairie Village. Ray Holmes managed Commonwealth Theatre chain theaters in Manhattan and Lawrence from 1931-1979, have moved to Manhattan from Scandia in 1931.
      • John Raymond "Ray" Marquette (b. 1937 KCMO - d. 1992 Mission, Johnson, KCKS) - 1972 @ Overland Park. Wife: Mary Ann Ramseyer Marquette (b. 1940 Lamar, Barton, MO - d. 2021 Springdale, Washington, AR), daughter of Fred Andrew Ramseyer (b. 1914 Nashville, Barton, MO - d. 2013 DeSoto, Johnson, KCKS) & Ruth Arlene Metsinger Ramseyer (b. 1922 Quapaw, Ottawa Co., Joplin MO metro, OK - d. 2017). Fred's parents: Alfred Ramseyer (b. 1872 Switzerland; emig. 1896; d. 1952 Barton Co., MO) & Mary Heiniger Ramseyer (b. 1882 Goodfield, Woodford, Peoria metro, IL - d. 1924 Barton Co., MO). In 1920, Ruth's father, Oscar Elvin Metsinger (1889-1935), was a teamster for the water route in Quapaw, the family resided at 105 Greece St. Fred Ramseyer died at the age of 98, on the day of his 74th wedding anniversary. He was employed with Allsman Cabinet Corp., farming in Jefferson Co., and during WWII at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in Prairie Center (residing in Lawrence). He also worked for the Robinson Gym at KU which was designed by James Naismith, founder of basketball He was a member of First Baptist of Lawrence.

      • Sally Ann Marquette Purcell (b. 1945 KS). Husband (1966 @ KCKS): Howard Wayne Purcell (b. 1944). Howard & Sally's wedding was at Overland Park Bible Chapel, officiated by Paul R. Goring of Colombia. Bridesmaids were Joan McCabe of Lawrence, KS & Ruth Montgomery of Phoenix, AZ. Max Grable of Dallas was best man. Groomsmen were Larry Fryback of Lawrence & Gary Wright of Wichita. Timothy Purcell, brother of Howard, was an usher, along with Alan Marquette. They settled initially in Lawrence, and by 1972 were in Topeka.

Altergott family

Alice Strayer recalls that Jake’s family was from Russia, he was employed as a tailor, and remembers him making the announcements during her era there in the 1940's. His wife Edith worked as a laborer in 1900 for Caleb Baker's awning factory, as did her sister Alice I. Allsman Stark (b. 1883 Junction City, KS - d. 1941 Oakland, Alameda, CA), who was R.C. at the end of her life, a member of St. Anthony's in Oakland. Jake & Edith relocated to KCMO in 1901.

  • Johann Jacob "Jake" Altergott +1949-1961 (b. 1872 Dönhof Colony, Vysokoye, Saratov, RU; emig. 1892; d. 1961 KCMO), son of Johann Wilhelm Altergott (1840-1910? Dönhof Colony, RU) & Kathryn Meisinger Altergott (b. 1840 Messer Colony, Krasnoarmeysk, Saratov, RU - d. Dönhof Colony, RU).
  • Edith Edna Allsman Altergott +1949-1967 (b. 1881 Junction City, Davis/Geary, KS - d. 1967 KCMO), daughter of Sgt. John Dryden Allsman (b. 1845 Sullivan Co., IN - d. 1906 Sawtelle, L.A., CA) & Adaline Hooker Allsman (b. 1849 Vernon, Jennings, IN; m. 1866 Shelby, IN; d. 1917 Oakland, Alameda, CA). In 1900, John & Adaline resided in Quindaro, Wyandotte, KCKS. John was employed in 1880 in Junction City as a brick mason. He served 1862-1865 with the 62nd Illinois Inf., Co. H, enlisting in McLean Co., IL and discharged in Chicago. He resided in 1905 in Santa Monica, and his final year at the Sawtelle Veterans Home in Los Angeles.
    • Kathryn Marie Altergott Sommerville (b. 1903 KCMO - d. 2004 Eudora, Douglas, KS). Husband: William "Will" Baker Sommerville (b. 1902 KCMO - d. 1978 Lawrence, Douglas, KS), son of William Charles Sommerville (b. 1874 Wishaw, N.L., Scot. - d. 1931 KCMO) & Jessie Mae Baker Sommerville (b. 1879 Chicago, Cook, IL - d. 1964 KCMO). Jessie was a daughter of Caleb Jason Baker (1840-1918), co-founder of Baker-Lockwood and the Troost assembly. In 1922, William Charles Sommerville was president of Baker-Lockwood Awning, and Will's brother Caleb J. Sommerville was an employee there. See Sommerville family.
    • Ruth Lucia Altergott Armstrong (b. 1904 KCMO - d. 2006 Tyler, Smith, TX). Ruth studied at Northeast High School and Metropolitan Community College, both in KCMO. She also earned an A.B. in 1925/1926 from the University of Kansas, and from the Kansas City Teachers' College in 1927. She served as an instructor at Stony Brook School from 1928-1932, then as their librarian 1932-1940+. Husband (1929 @ Manhattan, NYC, NY): Francis G. Armstrong (b. 1903 Cobleskill, Schoharie, NY - d. ?), son of Charles W. Armstrong (1872-1944) & Nellie Merritt Jamieson Armstrong (1880-1959). In 1910, Charles was principal of the Cobleskill High School. Francis earned his A.B. in 1923 from Colgate Univ., and his A.M. from Columbia Univ. in 1928. From 1923-1925, he was a Latin & German instructor at Worcester Academy, and on the summer faculty in 1924 of the American Students European Tours. From 1925-1940+, he taught Latin & German at Stony Brook, and also served as its Dean 1928-1938+. Ruth resided in Stony Brook until 1998 when she relocated to Tyler, TX. She was a member of Setauket Presbyterian.
    • Garnet E. Altergott Erwin (b. 1907 KCMO - d. 1986 Prairie Village, MO). Later a Presbyterian. Husband (1941 @ Harrisonville, Cass, MO): Joseph Russell Erwin (b. 1906 KCMO - d. 1984), son of Ed Erwin & Mary Erwin. From 1926-1976, Russell was employed for the Gelhaar Uniform Co., which produced uniforms for the military, law enforcement, musical groups, airlines, bus firms, shriners, hotels, industrial uniforms (including for bakers, dairies & truck lines), as per an article in the Kansas City Star from 1962-2-25. It was founded prior to 1892 in the manufacture of a variety of caps, before being expanded into the uniform industry about 1927 by Alfred M. Blumenthal who served as its president at that time until his death in 1958. It met at 1228-32 Grand in "Garment District" until moving in 1962 to 1608 Oak, KCMO.
    • Alice Margaret Altergott Gill (1909-1996 KCMO). Husband (1928 @ KCMO): Forest Prescott Gill (1906-2005 KCMO), son of Forest Ernest Gill (b. 1874 Richmond, Ray, MO - d. 1947 KCMO) & Mabel Annie Prescott Gill (b. 1879 Paola, Miami, KCKS - d. 1955 Westwood, Johnson, KCKS). Forest & Margaret were married in 1928 by a pastor named Bradbury of Bales Baptist Church, now (since 2013) Bales Avenue Community Church, organized in 1886/1891. By 1901 was the second largest Baptist church in the state of Missouri, with membership over 1,000. A directory from 1900 for that church can be obtained at Watermark West Rare Books in Wichita. Forest & Alice were also among the 282 charter members of megachurch Village Presbyterian in KCMO suburb Prairie Village in 1949, both active thru the remainder of their lives. Its founding pastor was "Dr. Bob" Meneilly (1925-2021), an influential civic and social justice leader, according to a brief bio on the church's website. The initial charter group was largely recruited by Meneilly thru neighborhood door-to-door outreach, as a community church for all denominations, though financed by the Presbyterian Board of Missions. By 1954, the church had grown to 1,600 with its peak at over 7,000 under Meneilly's leadership, as per his wiki. Over 400 of his sermons from 1971-1999 can be found on SoundCloud. Forest & Margaret operated a silkscreen printing company known as Gill Studio in the advertising industry for many years, as per her obit. In 1940, this studio was located in the Library District of KCMO, at 906 Central. It was founded in Forest's basement in 1934, now known as Gill Line in Lenexa.       • Nancy S. Gill Gilman (b. 1933 KCMO). Husband: Mark Samuel Gilman (b. 1932 Atchison, KS), son of Lt. Col. Joseph R. Gilman (b. 1895 Hope, Dickinson, KS - d. 1982 Shawnee Mission, KCKS) & Opal Eunice Thomas Gilman (b. 1903 Rush, Buchanan, MO - d. 1996). Lt. Col. Gilman served in the Navy in France as a Seaman during WWI, and the Kansas National Guard from 1924-1940, then the Army Air Corps 1940-1948 where he retired. In 1910, Opal's father, Samuel Cowell Thomas (b. 1878 Rushville, Buchanan, MO - d. 1952 Atchison, KS), owned a blacksmith shop in Rush Twp., MO.

    • SSgt. John Jacob Altergott (b. 1911 KCMO - d. 1979 Polk Co., MO). In +1930-1940+, John was employed as a lithographer, then from 1942-1946 with the U.S. Army, and in 1950 as a jewelry engraver. In 1940, his employer was the R.M. Rigby Printing Co., 915 Wyandotte, KCMO. 1st wife (1930 @ Clay Co., MO): Vivian Pauline Shaw Altergott-Baley (b. 1912 KCMO - d. 2001), daughter of Charles E. Shaw & Clara Mabel Johnson Shaw (b. 1891 IL). Mabel may have been one referenced in 1918 in The Sainte Marie Tribune when she was twenty-five, as being "seven feet six inches tall" who was in a Chicago hospital having sections of a femur bone removed in the hopes of stopping growth. 2nd wife (1947 @ KCMO): Vada Katherine Davis Ayres-Altergott-Weaver (b. 1923 Parsons, KS - d. 1977 Leavenworth Co., KS), daughter of Elmer Davis (b. 1883 Vienna/Jennings, Scott, IN - d. 1956 Clay Co., MO) & Rose Belle Overby Davis (b. 1890 VA; m. 1908 Fort Scott, Bourbon, KS; d. 1929 KCMO).

Husband (1940 @ Yuma, AZ): Eugene Charles Raphael (b. 1910 Inglewood, L.A., CA - d. 2002 Fort Lauderdale, Broward, FL), son of . In 1940, Eugene resided in Beverly Hills, he and his wife initially settled in Los Angeles. In 1949, the family lived in Glendale, and Eugene was employed as an aircraft mechanic.

Husband (1964 @ L.A., CA): Robert "Bob" Hamilton Kelsey (b. 1934 Cedar Rapids, Linn, IA - d. 2017 Santa Ynez Valley, CA), son of Robert Augustus Kelsey (b. 1898 Saylor, Polk, Des Moines metro, IA - d. 1974 Oceanside, San Diego, CA) & Linnie Elizabeth "Betty" Cate Kelsey (b. 1899 Perry, Dallas, IA - d. 1975 Oceanside, CA). Bob was a pioneer real estate publisher as per his obit, best known for Leading Estates of the World magazine, developed in 1969.

Husband (1937 @ KCMO): William James McKnight, Jr. (b. 1916 St. Joseph, Buchanan, MO - d. 1995 Tyler, TX), son of William James McKnight, Sr. (b. 1887 National City, San Diego, CA - d. 1962 Seattle, King, WA) & Eda Flora Ganzer McKnight (b. 1894 Hickman Mills, Jackson, KCMO - d. 1961 Sunland, L.A., CA). In 1920, William Sr. resided in KCMO, and was employed as an auto mechanic. In 1940, William Jr. was employed as a radio tech, and was residing in Lawrence, KS.

Baker family

In 1841, Caleb's father Isaac was a hawker (salesman) in Hailsham. By 1851, he was more specifically a traveling "chapman hawker" (booklet salesman), and in 1871 as a "general dealer" (operated a general store). In 1872, Caleb was co-founder of Baker-Lockwood Western Awning Co., initially in Chicago.It is said that when the Great Chicago Fire happened in 1871, their stock survived as they had buried it in the river. After the fire, they relocated to Kansas City in 1872.

In 1850, Darwin Roe (Eliza's 1st husband) resided in Barker, Broome, NY which is part of the Binghamton metro. Eliza's first husband was Darwin S. Roe (b. 1835 NYC, NY - d. 1876 Chicago, IL), son of Alanson Roe (b. 1808 Dutchess Co., NY - d. 1899 Coventry, NY) & Louisa Smith Roe (b. 1810 Chenango Co., NY - d. 1888 Coventry, NY). Louisa was a g-g-g-granddaughter of John Smith (1638-1676 Wethersfield, Hartford, CT) & Mary Partridge Smith (1647-1683 Hadley, Hampshire, MA). John's father Samuel Smith was among the earliest settlers of Wethersfield, as per the Old Connecticut Path.

    • Maggie Isabel Baker Kerr (b. 1866 Eng. - d. 1890 Chicago, IL). Husband: Donald Morrison Kerr (b. 1855 Lochinver / Assynt, Sutherland, Scot. - d. 1944 Hinsdale, DuPage, IL), son of Cathel Kerr (1810-1867 Assynt, Suth., Scot.) & Janet Morrison Kerr (b. 1827 Lochbroom, Ross, Scot.).
      • Barbara Annabel Kerr McLaren (1886-1968 Chicago, IL). Barbara's obit suggested gifts to Woodside Bible assembly in Maywood (Chicago). Husband (1909 @ Chicago, IL): Robert James McLaren (1885-1965 Chicago, IL), son of James Earl McLaren (b. 1860 Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Glasgow metro, Scot. - d. 1915 Oakland, CA) & Helen "Nellie" McClintock Scott McLaren (b. 1860 Airdrie, Scot. - d. 1941 Santa Clara, CA). At the age of 15, Robert was employed as an office clerk in Chicago. By the age of 25, he was an architect, and by 35 (1920) he and Hans Peter Henschien, a leading designer of cold storage warehouses in the U.S., had set up a joint practice as Henschien & McLaren from about 1914-1929, according to a [historical evaluation of Rath Packing from 1991. Henschien wrote an authoritative reference in 1915 titled ""Packing House and Cold Storage Construction". As per papers from The Art Institute of Chicago, Henschien & McLaren are credited with the design of what is now University Station, originally used for cold storage, and the largest of its type in that city at the time, located in the Pilsen Historic District of the Lower West Side area of Chicago. Robert was a leader in the Architects Club of Chicago, an officer of the American Specification Institute, a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Chicago Architectural Exhibition League. In 1942, Robert's office was located in the Civic Opera Building in the Chicago Loop, which today contains the second-largest opera auditorium on the continent.

    • Annis R. Telfer (b. 1893 KCMO - d. 1968 Pueblo, CO). From +1920-1950+, Annis was a gradeschool math teacher in Pueblo.
    • Edward Shireburne Telfer (b. 1895 KCMO - d. 1964 South Gate, L.A., CA). Wife: Frances Adele Tillett Telfer (b. 1910 Lathrop, Clinton, MO - d. 1973 Riverside, CA), daughter of Eugene Tillett. Frances' family moved to Pueblo in 1926. Their wedding in 1929 took place in the home of Frances' aunt Mrs. M.R. Smith, and officiated by C. Arlin Heydon, pastor of the local First Baptist (1872-2016) which at its peak had over a thousand members. In 2007, the church raised $3,600 to provide a fifty cent discount for 616 vehicles over the course of a day as a type of "servant evangelism", as per an article in Baptist News. Edward & Frances moved to California about 1945. Frances moved to South Gate in 1971. Her memorial was at Hillside Church with Marvin C. Anderson officiating.
