Bennett family

Roy was a member in 1972 of the North York Gospel Chapel, a "well-known street preacher" and pastor of the York County Street Meeting Group. He retired in 1961 after 42 years as a machinist at Borg-Warner Co., and a member of the Shiloh Fire Co., Vigilant Fire Co., and the Firemen's Assoc. of York Co. George Rainey officiated Roy's memorial, and memorial contributions were recommended to Sudan Interior Mission (SIM) of Cedar Grove, NJ). Roy's 2nd wife: Grace P. Wolf Bennett

  • Roy Chester Bennett +1929+ (1896-1972 York, PA), son of Armor Joshua Bennett & Ida May Landis Bennett (1879-1957 York, PA). Christened 1897 @ St. John's Episcopal. Armor & Ida's wedding was officiated by Henry B. Spayd (1855-1938) of First U.B. of York on 6-13-1896, in the home of Armor's sister Annie M. Bennett Wilson (1865-1948). Armor deserted his wife in 1900, and Ida and her children went to live with her parents, Daniel B. Landis & Catherine Landis.

Balmer Bennett (b. 1895 York, PA - d. 1960 West Manchester, York, PA), daughter of John Charles Balmer (b. 1867 Milton Grove, Lancaster, PA - d. 1899 York Co., PA) & Alice Sarah Foose Balmer (b. 1864 (Blain, Perry Co. or Boiling Springs, Cumberland Co.,) PA; m. 1894 Cuyahoga Co., OH; d. 1920 York, PA). John's 1st wife was Ellen May Rupp Balmer (b. 1867; m. 1889 St. Paul's Evang. Luth., Straban, Adams, PA; d. 1890 Dover, York, PA), daughter of Charles Henry Rupp (1828-1910 York Co., PA) & Leah Rauhauser Rupp (1828-1888 York Co., PA). Leah's father was Peter Rauhauser (1777-1853 Dover Twp., York, PA), buried in the "Old United Brethren Burial Ground" in Dover Twp. See Rauhauser family.

Wife: Margaretta Jean Neiman Bennett (b. 1921 PA - d. 1984 Bristol, Grafton, NH), daughter of Charles Herman Neiman (b. 1886 York Co., PA - d. 1966 Hanover, York, PA) & Grace Viola Dunkinson Neiman (b. 1882 Chambersburg, Franklin, PA; m. 1909 York, PA; d. 1956 York, PA). Charles & Grace Neiman's wedding was at a Lutheran parsonage on Frederick street in Hanover, officiated by A.M. Heilman. In 1909. Prior to marriage, Charles was employed as a plumber, and Grace was a clerk at the dry goods store of Elmer E. Wentz.

    • James R. Bennett (1925-1990 York Co., PA). Member of North York Gospel Chapel. Grad. 1985 Moody Bible Institute, founding chaplain (and chairman of the tenants' organization) @ Kingston House, West King St. 1982-1990; held weekly services @ York County Prison, Juvenile Detention Home of York Co., Pleasant Acres & York Rescue Mission. He served on the advisory council of Grace & Truth Evangelistic Assoc., South Gibson, Susquehanna Co. WWII Army vet as a Tech. 5th Class in Normandy & Northern France, with the 300th Port Co., 518th Port Battalion. Officiant at James' memorial was Dwight Lehman, then dean of students at Appalachian Bible College, Bradley, WV. Wife: Mary Lou Graybill Bennett (1929-2014 York Co., PA), daughter of Leon Edwin Graybill (1904-1983 York Co., PA) & Catherine Gertrude Rohrbaugh Graybill (1909-1957 York Co., PA). Mary Lou grad William Penn High School and nursing at Philadelphia General Hospital. RN for 23 years at York Hospital, then a year at Barley's Convalescent Home, then 13 years at Rest Haven York. Her memorial was officiated by Edward Wible & Jeremy McCombs of Chanceford Alliance Church in Felton.

Evan Shaffer (1921-2014) officiated Miriam's wedding, Samuel Wise Jr. & Charles Behler witnessed.

Crist family

  • Clarence Elmer Crist +1929-1956 (b. 1886 Pavia, Bedford, PA - d. 1956 York, PA), son of Francis Treese Crist (1843-1898 Union, Bedford, PA) & Sarah Diehl Ritchey Crist (b. 1850 Greenfield, Blair, PA; m. 1867 Zion UCoC, Pavia, PA; d. 1914 Union, Bedford, PA). Francis was an enlisted Civil War vet on the Union side (1864-1865) in the 55th Inf., earning the rank of Corporal.
  • Bessie Pearl Weyant Crist-Rohrbaugh +1984 (b. 1889 Blair Co., PA; m. 1908 Amelia, VA; d. 1984 Rest Haven, York, PA), daughter of George Weyant & Alice Corle Weyant. Pearl's 1st husband was T.P. Rohrbaugh. Pearl was self-employed as a beautician.
    • Nelda Pearl Crist Roth (1910-1991 York Co., PA). Husband: Kermit Samuel Roth (b. 1910 East Orange, Essex, NJ - d. 1993 Carmel Hills, Charlotte, Mecklenburg, NC), daughter of Jacob Henry Roth (1888-1959 York Co., PA) & Margaret Salome Bohle Roth (1888-1976 York, PA). Jacob & Margaret Roth were members of Zion UCoC. Jacob was the founder of Roth Brothers, church suppliers in York.
    • Dorothy Grace Crist Nunn (b. 1917 Sproul, Greenfield, Blair, PA - d. 2005 Chambersburg, PA). Husband: Carroll Lucian Nunn (b. 1917 Luray, Page, VA - d. 1984 Chambersburg, PA), son of Vernon Luther Nunn (b. 1885 Page Co., VA - d. 1926 East Manchester Twp., York, PA) & Bessie Roy Tharpe Nunn (b. 1881 Front Royal, Warren, VA - d. 1955 York, PA). 1956 @ Washington, D.C.

Enfield family

There was a Harold Enfield who had previously been employed as an actor, registered Baptist, who was sentenced in Pittsburgh, PA on 5-10-1916 to 4-30 years in the Western State Penitentiary for "breaking and escaping from penitentiary". In 1920, he was still serving his sentence in Pittsburgh, employed as a broommaker. One of his earlier crimes was for burglary in New York, while employed at the Hotel Williard until his disappearance on 3-29-1911, as reported in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 1911-5-14. He had a relative named Elizabeth Enfield in New Zealand.

  • Harold Enfield +1932+ (b. 1887 London, Eng.; emig. 1910; d. 1968 York, PA), son of John Enfield & Anna A. Enfield. In 1930, he was employed as an auto salesman in York. In 1942, for McGann Mfg. Co., Richland Ave., York. His last employer was the former George Motter's Sons, as a machinist. Donald Smart of the Baltimore Grant Assembly, PA officiated his memorial. He emigrated in 1910, c/o Mrs. Lewis.
  • Anna E. Shanabrough Enfield (b. 1889 PA; m. 1923 York, PA; d. 1980 York Co., PA), daughter of William Henry Shanabrough (1860-1937 York Co., PA) & Alice M. Naylor Shanabrough (1860-1939 York Co., PA). See Shanabrough family.

Quickel family

Unknown if the Quickel family was part of the assembly, but The York Dispatch ran a story on 5-7-1927 titled, "Surprised on 11th (sic) Birthday" which named several from the assembly: "A surprise birthday was given in honor of Miss Pauline Quickel, who celebrated her eighth birthday anniversary, at her home, 30 West 11th avenue, North York. Those present were: Mrs. Philip Eppley and son Junior, Miss Edna Rudisill, Mrs. Roy Bennett, Robert and James Bennett, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Enfield, Elsie and Lola Landis, Mr. and Mrs. Malvin (sic) Quickel and daughters, Virginia and Pauline Quickel."

  • Melvin Roy Quickel (1892-1944 York, PA), son of Edward Barnes Quickel (1851-1936 York Co., PA) & Amanda Elizabeth Fackler Quickel (1852-1932 York, PA). Melvin was killed in a car accident.
  • Viola May Balmer Quickel (m. 1918 Salvation Army, York, PA). Wedding officiated by the S.A. commander, Levi Grimshaw. Retired waitress. A member of the First AOG of York (now Redemption International Ministries), memorial by S.W. Brewer.
