Section 6 – Mr. Darby’s fifth trip to America (June 1872 to April 1873)

Arrived in Boston in June 1872 where he had open doors and in East generally. On July 22, was in St. Louis where he labored. One Presbyterian showed interest and some of their people… perhaps B.F. Pinkerton or Buicks. In September was in Canada, and then back to Chicago by November 7, 1872 where he had three meetings a day often. Mostly readings; much inquire but little movement. He says from Chicago, “In the country it is generally utter indifference and money-seeking.

I have not seen one yet, French or English, who has not said to me, he came out without God, or had he known what he knows now, he would not have come. They come to get on in the world, and get trouble and sorrow, and their business (till God has exercised them) is to get on, not to enjoy Christ. I know those who were in communion in England and would not give five cents a week to get to the Lord’s Day Meeting for the breaking of bread.” (It is no doubt at this trip he was in touch with D.L. Moody in Chicago and preached at his tabernacle.)

Six began the breaking of bread at Springfield, Illinois, on November 20, 1872. Some new gatherings round Boston of emigrants mostly, the native population is extremely difficult to reach. Conscience has little power and activity, organization, man. Back to St. Louis on November 30, 1872, then to Chicago in December 1872. At Lexington, Kentucky on January 6, 1873, among real Americans. (This gathering is now believed to be with the St. Louis Natural History Hall Brethren.) On March 14th at Montreal and to Boston on March 19th, Concord, and New York April 1873, and back to England by June 1873.

Writing about this date he states, “The Lord is working in the States, blessed be His name! As to the West Indies, Barbados goes on with considerable blessing; Demerara, a number in communion, I suppose over three hundred in four places, but rather dead. I thought Jamaica afforded a wide field when I was there, and the doors were open, it seemed to me. There are some three hundred in communion in five or six gatherings.”

Only remark in Letters regarding the 1872 Guelph meeting was, “I trust also ours at Guelph was useful… a spirit of brotherly union reigned”.

Several letters in 1872 refer to sealing with the Spirit, which apparently was prominent with some, and which later was source of difficulty with the Grants.
