He joined the household of a retired naval officer named Robert Lamport Pengelly, as a tutor, presumably for his children. While here, Scriven became engaged to Pengelly's niece, Eliza Catherine Roach, who became ill and died in August 1860. In the late 1860's or early 1870's, he left the Pengelly residence for a cottage in Port Hope, where he remained until his death in 1886.
