Dr. John D. Gill was born in Westfield, New Jersey in 1911, to Dr. W.W. Gill, also a dentist. He maintained a dentist office in Westfield from 1946 until his retirement in 1989. He was a graduate of the Columbia University School of Dentistry in New York City, receiving his degree in 1935. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
In 1936, Dr. Gill was serving as correspondent for the Westfield Gospel Hall, his father Dr. W.W. Gill was serving the same role in 1927. Dr. Gill was the founder of the Woodside Chapel in Fanwood, and served as an elder. He was a member of the Board of Christian Missions in Many Lands in Spring Lake, as well as a member of the New Jersey Dental Society, and the Christian Businessman's Committee in Plainfield.
