Alex's parents were John (b. 1835) and Bridget Shay McEwen, and Alex lived in Sacramento from 1871 to at least 1879, and moved to Oakland by 1911.  His brother Edward H. McEwen was born Feb. 18, 1855 in Brockport, NY, an ironmolder, owned a grocery store (Third & M),  and served as a trustee for the City of Sacramento from 1904 until his death in 1906.  They also had a sister Mary.
