Notable Families
Aitken family
WiS 1965-8: Detroit, MI: "Our dear brother Alex. Aitken, formerly of Akron, Ohio., was called home suddenly from the hospital, following an operation, June 5th., Saved in Akron 32 years ago and, with his wife, in fellowship there for years until coming here to West Chicago Hall. Pray for his widow and three daughters."
TBM 1973-6: Mrs. Annie B. Aitken went home to be with Christ on April 23, 1973, at the age of 85. She was born in Scotland and also born again there in early years and in Assembly fellowship in Auchinleck, Ayrshire, Scotland. Came to U.S.A, in 1923 and continued in fellowship in Akron, Ohio, Detroit, Michigan and last years in Stark Road Gospel Hall, Livonia, Michigan. A beloved sister, godly, quiet and kind. Will be missed in the home and Assembly. Now “ with Christ which is far better.”
As per Annie's obit in The Akron Beacon Journal, from 1937-1962, "Sandy & Annie" were caretakers for the Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, retiring after 25 years service. Sandy served there as "the houseman, groundsman and tinkerer". They resided in an apartment over the mansion's carriage house. The obit also reports that they "had a storybook romance. Mr. Aitken returned to Scotland from America when he 'became homesick for Annie'. They were married in 1912. They returned together in 1922 and came straight to Akron." They "cared for the big Seiberling family estate virtually without help. They worked there when the mansion was occupied by the late Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Seiberling. They remained five years after the mansion became the Stan Hywet Foundation."
The Aitken's long-time employer, Frank Augustus "Frank" / "F.A." Seiberling (b. 1859 Norton, OH - d. 1955 Akron, OH), as per his wiki, with his brother Charles, co-founded Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in 1898 in Akron, at the age of forty, jobless, with a wife and three children. The company, as per Frank's wiki, was named for Charles Goodyear, the inventor of vulcanized rubber, who ironically died penniless forty years before. Religion-wise, Frank was with Akron's Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and a generous donor of the rebuilding of its current structure in 1914.
- Alexander "Sandy" Aitken 1933-1962 (b. 1889 Scot.; emig. 1922; d. 1965 Detroit, MI)
- Annie B. Finnie Aitken 1923-1962 (b. 1890 Scot.; emig. 1923; d. 1973 Livonia, MI).
- Marion H. Aitken Ritchie 1923-1931+ (b. 1913 Scot.). In 1940, they resided in Dearborn, Wayne, MI and George was employed as a machine repairman with Ford Motor Co. In 1930, as a single man, George lived in Detroit and was employed as a laborer with an auto factory, perhaps then Ford also. His father, James, was employed as a laborer with the same. Back in Scotland, James was a fisherman. Elsie's first husband was Dr. Rupert Edward McKibbon (1874-1931), a surgeon in Table Bluff, Humboldt, CA in 1910.
- Helen "Ellen" Aitken Wilson 1923-1938+ (b. 1920 Scot.). Husband (1942 @ Akron, OH): Thomas Wilson (b. 1916 McKeesport, PA), son of Alexander Wilson & Isabelle Glendenning Wilson. In 1942, Thomas was employed in McKeesport as a toolmaker. James Crawford of Cleveland officiated their wedding. That year, Ellen resided at the mansion, employed as a registered nurse.
- Elizabeth "Bettie" Finnie Aitken Crewdson 1923-1951+ (b. 1923 Akron, OH - d. 2001 Jacksonville, Duval, FL). Husband: Edwin Wilson Crewdson (b. 1917 Detroit, MI - d. 2000 Jacksonville, FL), son of Isaac Wilson Crewdson (b. 1871 Brant, ON - d. 1950 Detroit, MI) & Anna "Annie" Margaret Martin Crewdson (b. 1879 London, ON - d. 1958 Detroit, MI). Her parents were Henry Crewdson (b. 1845 Manchester, Eng. - d. 1918 Detroit, MI) & Martha Catharine Kline Gibbs-Crewdson (b. 1841 Vaughan, Toronto metro, York, ON - d. 1921 Detroit, MI), and were also PB in 1871 in Toronto.
Angwin family
WiS 1968-5: Akron, OH: "Our dear sister Mrs. Adelaide Angwin “went home” March 6th., aged 89. A worthy sister, always in the assembly meetings, and much missed by the Christians here. Prayer requested for her husband."
- Mrs. Adelaide Angwin +1968 (d. 1968)
Becker family
WiS 1940-1: Fallen Asleep: Akron, OH: "Dan L. Becker, after a lingering illness, went into the presence of the Lord on Nov. 17. A brother who feared God above many. Who sought to honor God and serve His people. Faithful when in health. Patient in his long illness. His end was peace. The Editor, while holding tent meetings in Akron this summer had the privilege of visiting dear Dan often while there, and shall never forget one day when he sat up in his bed and sweetly sang, “Can You Wonder That I Love Him So.” The fragrance and savor of Christ that he manifested will ever be blessed in the memory of those who knew him. For many years he lived in Oakland, Cal. The services were very large, over 70 relatives being present. W. P. Douglas and Albert Joyce spoke goodly and faithful words to those who attended."
WiS 1933-1: Fallen Asleep: Akron, OH: "On Dec. 7, 1932, Mrs. Rebecca Becker (mother of Dan, Mike, Harry and Prank Becker) went to be with Christ after 10 days illness. Aged 78 years. Saved at meetings held in Akron 35 years ago by John Smith. Continued steadfast unto the end. Her home and hospitality was shared by many of God's servants who are now with the Lord. She was left a widow with 12 children the year she was saved (of which 9 are now saved). Attended all meetings faithfully until within 2 weeks before going home. The services which were large were conducted in the home by Wm. Ferguson; at the hall by B. Bradford and G. Duncan; at the grave by Duncan White.
AA 1949-6: With Christ: Cleveland, OH: "Harry Becker of this city went home on June 3, after a brief illness when many of the Lord’s people prayed for him. The Cleveland Press of June 4 said, “Harry Becker led a dual life of preacher and railroad engineer. He began his preaching career in 1913. His 'pulpit’ was the Tom Johnson Square. Devoted to this personal evangelism, he spoke to thousands of passers by. Before coming to Cleveland six years ago he lived in Columbus, Orville and Akron. Until he made his permanent home here, his preaching on the square was during railroad stopovers.” Traveling in his years of retirement on a railroad pass made it convenient for Mr. Becker to travel and he was often seen at conferences of the Lord’s people. He attended the Christian Workers' Conference each year. Mrs. Becker requests prayer for his son Dan who gave evidence of being troubled as he listened to the Word, and also for his daughters who are away from the Lord."
WiS 1970-5: Cleveland, OH: "Our dear sister Mrs. Dorothy A. Hassink “went home” March 11th. She was saved at age 22 as a result of meetings of the late James Marshall in Akron and Addison Rd. Assemblies. A patient sufferer for a good part of her married life, she was uncomplaining and kind. She leaves her husband of the Monticello Assembly, two daughters and one son. Also surviving her aged father, M. Becker of Akron."

- Elvina "Vinnie" L. Becker +1897-1914 (1891-1914 Akron, OH). In 1910, Vinnie was employed as a saleslady at a tea store, and also a volunteer with the West Exchange Street Mission, sponsored by the assembly. Vinnie was notoriously killed by Harry Porterfield Boomer (1890-1974) during a robbery at her brother Frank's "Independent Tea Co." which also sold groceries at 16 Bartges St. A couple days prior to the murder, Boomer had eaten a meal prepared by Vinnie, with her brother Frank. He had previously worked occasionally for them over a span of six months, but there had been no work for him in two weeks and he elected to rob the store when Frank was out making deliveries and Vinnie was alone. His original intent was to use a homemade mallet to knock her unconscious while she was engaged in filling a sack of rolled oats for a customer, but she turned and recognized him, so he switched to a hatchet and murdered her. This news report soon after the killing, and this after he was convicted, provides more detail. Her funeral was officiated by T.D.W. Muir of Detroit, and was regarded as one of the largest ever held in Akron due to Vinnie's many friendships thru her work with the gospel mission.

Bercaw family
WiS 1969-2: Akron, OH: "Our beloved brother Joseph Bercaw “went home” December 16. Saved in 1922 at meetings of the late Brethren W.P. Douglas and James McMullen and for many years faithfully carried on the correspondence of the Assembly. His welcome on entering the Hall was always cordial and fitting, a gracious brother, Remember his widow in prayer, also his married daughter — the saints miss him. He was aged 69."
From +1936-1963, Joseph resided at 928 Bisson Ave., and served as a correspondent for AGH during this time. In 1963, he relocated to 4007 Hawthorne, Norton, OH still as a correspondent until mid-1966. At some juncture, he relocated to Norton, NJ but he died in Akron. Joseph was born in Phillipsburg, NJ which is where David Calderhead settled when he first emigrated to the U.S. from Scotland, and was part of the home assembly Phillipsburg Gospel Hall. Joseph and his first wife Iola were residing there in 1920 where she died.
In 1941, Joseph was employed as a machinist for the B.F. Goodrich Co. in Akron, which was the first American tire manufacturer to make radial tires. Also, as per the above wiki, in 1903, the first car to cross the U.S., was fitted with these tires as was Charles' Lindbergh's airplane "Spirit of St. Louis" which made the first successful solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic in 1927. Joseph also worked as a machinist for Freitag Manufacturing Co., and retired in 1963 from the Valv-Trol Co., in Cuyahoga Falls. In 1920, he was a machinist for Ingersoll Rand Co., then based Phillipsburg where it had been a centerpiece career for locals starting in 1903-2000 until its move to Dublin, Ireland, as per a 2018 article in Lehigh Valley Live news. Phillipsburg was apparently the site of its first factory, or as such as its merger with Sergeant Drill Co., two years before its merger with Rand Drill Co.
- Joseph Kenneth Bercaw 1922-1966+ (b. 1899 Phillipsburg, NJ - d. 1968 Akron, OH), son of Theodore Bercaw & Anna Davis Bercaw.

Calderhead family
See Who's Who at Lincoln Heights Gospel Chapel (formerly the old Mansfield Gospel Hall) for a more detailed biography of the Calderhead family. Mansfield Gospel Hall, founded prior to 1936, had a division in 1948 when they rebranded as LHGC, and David transferred to AGH with some of his children, and Agnes stayed with other children in Mansfield until presumably the start of the newer Mansfield Gospel Hall founded about 1959 thru the preaching of Norman Crawford, Lorne McBain, etc.
Then it is assumed that David & Agnes reunited in co-founding the new MGH. Some of their descendants also assisted with the founding of Clyde Gospel Hall founded about 1958. David was commended to the Lord's work presumably while in Scotland, also in his time in Phillipsburg, New Jersey 1930-1931+, and definitely by the assembly in Asheville, North Carolina when he removed in 1940 to the old Mansfield Gospel Hall.
- David Octavius Calderhead 1948-1958? (b. 1897 Camnethan, Lanarkshire, Strathclyde, Scotland - d. 1980 Mansfield, OH), son of James Calderhead (b. 1860 Galston, Ayrshire, Strathclyde, Scot. - d. 1930 Larkhall, Strathclyde, Scot.) & Elizabeth Keer Borland Sharp-Calderhead (b. 1858 West Kilpatrick, Dumbartonshire, Strathclyde, Scot. - d. 1930 Larkhall, Scot.).

Our brother was born in Ireland in 1884, saved at sixteen years of age, gathered with the saints at Carrick until coming to Philadelphia, Penna., when a young man and met with the Assembly there at 20th and Dickinson. He came to Akron Oct. 10th, 1913, and has been a valuable brother all through these years. His godly advice and shepherding marked him out as a worthy elder and the younger men left behind have a good example to follow thus and we bespeak for them God's blessing as they continue in the things which they have learned... 2 Tim. 3:14. Pray for his widow. Their home was open to many and hospitality was freely extended, to which many of us can testify. We count it a privilege to have known our beloved brother for more than 35 years, profiting by his counsel and friendship in the things of God. Three sons and one daughter should have our prayers."

After lunch he came again and set up the job and started the machine, and then kindly said to John Soper, “Young man are you a Christian?' The arrow of conviction entered bls soul as he answered, “No!
