He may have been born May 12, 1848 in Amherst, MA to John Henry Bardwell (1818-1854) and Laura Ann Clarke Bardwell (1821-1848), who were born and died in Amherst, MA. He may also have had a twin brother, also named Joseph, who died at birth. Joseph's siblings may have been:

• Charles W. Bardwell (1845-1848) born in Greenfield, MA and died in Troy, NY.
• Stella Shepard Bardwell Chandler (1844-1924) born in Greenfield, MA, and died in South Pasadena, Los Angeles, CA. Her husband was Charles H. Chandler (1840-1885) born and died in Belchertown, MA. Children:
  • Lillian Anna Louise Walker (1867-1900) born in Belchertown, MA and died in Pasadena, CA. Married Charles Howard Walker. Children:
    • Bertha Ellinwood Walker (1894-1963) died in Altadena, CA.

Marriage

Joseph married Martha M. Crissey on May 26, 1879, which caused his move from Massachusetts where he operated a drugstore in 1876 in Springfield, MA, and in 1877 at 1 Pemberton Square, Boston, MA.

While in Denver, he and Martha first lived at 285 Welton St., Denver, CO. In 1881, his residence was listed as 38 Sixteenth St., Denver, CO.

He may also have remarried Lizzie Howarth in 1889, who was born in 1849, and died in 1934 in Newfields, NH.

Death

Joseph may have died April 12, 1906 in Worcester, MA where he had moved by 1900.
