The co-inventor of the telephone in 1876 (with Alexander Graham Bell) was in fellowship with one of the London assemblies from prior to 1881 until his death, his name was William Daniel Edy. In 1876, William Daniel Edy assisted Bell in perfecting his invention, of which the very first telephone conversation in the world took place between the Bell farm and Edy's photography studio in Burford Twp., Brant Co., Ontario. He also took the photographs of the original apparatus. Edy was subsequently made an offer for a half share in Bell's company for $1200, which he declined.
He subsequently opened a studio in London in 1879 with his brother James Newbury Edy (b. 1843 Brantford, ON - d. 1890 Toronto, ON) and the brothers were the first in all of Ontario to adopt the practice of retouching negatives, and regarded for over 30 years to be one of London's leading photographers, and declined a half-share in Eastman Kodak for $700. Later they produced an oil painting of Capt. Joseph Brant from a miniature on ivory made in England, which was presented through Lord Dufferin to Prince Arthur.
Edy was born in Burford Twp., in Brant Co., Ontario in 1832, a son of Daniel E. Edy (b. 1809 Boston, Norfolk, ON - d. 1867 Brant Twp., Bruce, ON) & Mary Ann Matthews Edy (b. 1811 St. Catherines, ON - d. 1899 Hamilton, ON). He was twice married, first to Miss Melinda Amelia Haviland Edy (b. 1831 ON - d. 1873 Brantford, ON), daughter of Benjamin Haviland (b. 1811 Townsend, Haldimand, ON - d. 1886 Waterford, Norfolk, ON) & Obedience Smith Haviland (b. 1813 PA - d. 1844 Waterford, Norfolk, ON).
2nd wife (1874 @ Oshawa, ON): Mary Howell (b. 1830 ON - d. 1910 Middlesex Co., ON), PB by 1891, daughter of Capt. Henry Howell (b. 1789 Knaresborough, York, England - d. 1862 Port Dover, ON) & Eliza Varey Howell (b. 1791 Leeds, York, Eng. - d. 1864 Port Dover, ON). William died in Aug. 1916 at the age of 85 in London.
