The Black family originated in Co. Donegal, Ireland, emigrating initially Barre, MA by 1758, and PA by 1761, and in Armstrong Co., by 1781.
TIG 1960-1-27: "Miss Verna Black of 514 Washington St., Indiana, passed away at her home yesterday afternoon from complications following several years illness. She was a former resident of Home RD. Born near Chambersville, Pa., Dec. 10, 1883, daughter of Jacob and Louisa Lelless Black, she was a schoolteacher and had taught a number of years in Indiana and Armstrong Counties. She was a member of Gospel Hall, Indiana... services will be held... Fri. Jan. 19, at 2 p.m., the Rev. J.K. Boston officiating.

Alexander's father was Henry Clay Work (b. 1680 Glasgow, Scot. - d. 1738 Lancaster, PA). Henry was responsible for the construction the year of his death of the [http://www.middleoctorara.org/history Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church] in Bart Twp., Lancaster Co., on a tract of land conveyed to him by the founding Penn family of Pennsylvania. The edifice is in present-day Quarryville.
IWM 1932-6-16: Mrs. Samuel M. Work: "Funeral services were conducted at the Streams Funeral Parlors on Philadelphia street on Friday afternoon, followed by interment in the Oakland cemetery, for Mrs. Samuel M. Work, a long-time and well-known resident of Indiana, who died at her home in Blairsville on Wednesday. The deceased, whose maiden name was Miss Sarah Jane Ross, was born in East Mahoning township and was reared to womanhood in that community. Following her marriage to Mr. Work, the couple established a home in Indiana where they resided for 40 years.
For the past three years, the home was in Blairsville. A woman of beautiful christian character, kind, gentle, sincerely interested in her home and family as well as her neighbors and friends, she represented the highest type of womanhood. She leaves her husband, a son, Charles R. Work, of Detroit, Mich., and an adopted daughter, Mrs. Robert S. Wolfe, of Blairsville; also three brothers, R.C. Ross of Grinnell, Ia.; George Ross of Audubon, Ia., and John T. Ross, of Salem, Ore."
TIG 1893-5-24: Eva Work: "Eva, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.M. Work, of Philadelphia street, died Saturday night at 11:45 of consumption. She was aged 19 years. She had been in delicate health for some time and for the past two months was confined to her room. Early in life she had united with the Presbyterian church, and so full was she of the love of the Divine Master that her whole life was a willing service in His cause. To know her was to love her and in this community are numerous young hearts heavy with grief at her death. She died peacefully, happily, and almost the last words she uttered, again expressed the great trust in her Savior that her pure young life had evidenced. Funeral services were held n the Presbyterian church at 2 on Monday afternoon. Rev. Dr. Hall conducted the services. He was assisted by the Rev. H.Q. Graham. The casket was born by Misses Fannie Thomas, Lillian Armstrong, Edith Young, Iva Braughler, Eva Agey and Nannie Moorhead who had been intimate friends of Eva Work in life. Interment was made in Oakland cemetery."
