Childhood

Ralph Edwin Littlefield was born around 1886 to James Edwin Littlefield (1860-1950) and Clara Etta Bomgardner (1865-1956), the 2nd generation of a total of four generations of optometry. His son would become the first optometrist in the Kansas City area to fit contact lenses, and holds patents on their manufacture. His father founded a school teaching optometry, trade associations, and wrote a book on the subject.

Ralph and Mary had four children: John Carnie Littlefield (1917-1973), Alice (1920-), Lawrence (1922-2016) and James Woodbury Littlefield (1925-2014).
