She was the daughter of John Thomas Martindale (b. 1885 England - d. 1973 Des Moines, IA) & Lucy Jane Lord Martindale (b. 1889 Lee, Polk, IA - d. 1959 Des Moines, IA). Her parents were in fellowship with the Buchanan Street Meeting House, her father retired as a brick mason.
Siblings
Dorothy had three siblings:
- James Porter Martindale - born Mar. 8, 1920. He married Violet Marie Vantrees (1921-2006 Des Moines, IA) He died Oct. 15, 1984, having lived his entire life in Des Moines, Iowa, more specifically Windsor Heights. His wife was the daughter of Otto Lee Vantrees (b. 1881 Sugar Creek Twp, IA - d. 1947 Des Moines, IA) and Etta B. Lockman Vantrees (b. 1891 Union Twp, IA - d. 1969 Des Moines, IA).
- John Wendall Martindale - born Jul. 10, 1917 in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated in 1939 with a B.S. in Chemistry from Iowa State University. His first wife was C. Johanna Martindale; Then in 1963 while living in Akron, Ohio, he remarried Evelyn Marie "Evie" Kauffman-Schray and they were married for 48 years. He worked as an engineer 46 years in the tire division of B.F. Goodrich, then as a tax consultant until he was 93. He died a year later on June 14, 2012 in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. His latter years were spent in fellowship at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Akron.
- Jeanette H. Martindale Pearson (1912-1968 Des Moines, IA); On Feb. 2, 1935 at Chariton, Iowa she married Gilbert Burdette Pearson (b. 1904 Hilton, IA - d. 1992 Plymouth, MN). Gilbert & Jeanette had two daughters together: Nancy Appling (Bethany, OK) & Sallie Conzet (Plymouth, MN). Gilbert was a meter electrician for Iowa Power and Light for over 40 years.
- Gilbert was the son of Elizabeth Sage Pearson (b. Marske, Cleveland, Yorkshire, England). His father was John Watson Pollock (b. 1876 Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland - d. 1931 Price, Carbon, Utah), a coal miner. At some juncture, they divorced, and John remarried Abbie Kiziah Dimick (b. 1891 Wellington, Carbon, UT - d. 1949 Hayward, CA). John was an "old-time baseball catcher", and Gabby Street], 1930-1931 manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, was once his understudy when they played together in the early 1900's in an Iowa league.
- Gilbert's stepfather was Joseph Pearson (b. 1879 Tow Law, Durham, England - d. 1954 Des Moines, IA). Joseph was a retired coal miner that emigrated to the U.S. in 1904, and an active Baptist. Gilbert changed his name in 1945 from Pollock to Pearson.
Marriage
On July 1, 1933 Dorothy married Preston Earl Wayne Boyer (b. 1910 Unionville, IA - d. 1996 Centerville, IA), officiated by Rev. Fred A. Riggs, and witnessed by D.T. Moffitt and Dorothy's sister Jeanette. Earl was the son of Ira Preston Boyer (b. 1884 Centerville, IA - d. 1977 Albia, IA) & Maude Ethel McDanel Boyer (1890-1947 Moravia, Appanoose, IA). Ira & Maude were in fellowship with the Moravia United Brethren Church at the time of Maude's death, and Ira was later with the Moravia Nazarene Church, and they farmed in Darby, IA prior to his retirement.
In the 1940's, Earl was employed under John Widerburg of Polk, IA as a farm laborer. He was responsible for the organization of the Charlton Valley Rural Co-op, and served on its board for 37 years. He was also a member of the Appanoose County Historical Society, Rathbun Lake Pioneers and and a 4-H leader. When Earl died in 1996, he was in fellowship with the Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville.
