Charles Reuben Phares was born August 26, 1880, the son of Alfred J. Phares and Jennie Brough Phares, in Centerville, IA.  He departed this life to be with Christ (which is far better) on February 27, 1954, at a hospital in Rochester, MN at the age of 73 years, 6 months and 1 day.  He had been in failing health for some time and seriously ill for about three weeks. 

He was cared for by his wife Mable until he was taken to the hospital by his sons, George and James Phares. Mr. Phares lived all of his life in Centerville and worked in the coal mines in and nearby for a number of years.  He was united in marriage to Mable Clay on February 1, 1903.  To this union nine children were born:

  • Arthur Phares (Oklahoma City)
  • Gerald Phares (Kansas City, MO)
  • Rex Phares (Indianola, IA)
  • Robert Phares (Pomona, CA)
  • Blanche Phares Osterfinke (Davenport, IA)
  • Jean Phares Spurgeon (Seymour, IA)
  • Velma Phares Claussen (Corning, IA)

Five grandchildren:

  • Richard Claussen (Davenport, IA)
  • Beverly Caviness (Greenfield, IA)
  • Miss Geraldine Phares (Kansas City, MO)
  • Roger Phares (Oklahoma City
  • Judy Phares (Indianola, IA)

Siblings:

  • Wright Phares (Centerville, IA)
  • Ivy Phares Benge (Alhambra, CA)
  • Gertrude "Gertie" Phares Fletcher (Alhambra, CA)

Funeral services were held at the Johnson Funeral Home in Centerville, conducted by David Lawrence of Centerville Gospel Chapel. Katherine and Ann Plowman sang "Sometime We'll Understand" and "Fade Fade Each Earthly Joy" with Mrs. Clara Swab as organist. Interment was in the Dale cemetery near Centerville.
