Norton William Montgomery, Sr., was born in Nov. 1832 in New Jersey, the son of William Montgomery and Susan Clark Montgomery.

Marriage

He married Phoebe Ann Bitter, the daughter of Henry Bitter, on Oct. 13, 1855 in Philadelphia, PA. 

Children

  • Joseph R. Montgomery (1856-1883) born in New Jersey, died at the age of 26.
  • Albert Norton Montgomery, Sr. (1860-1915) born in Philadelphia, worked as a merchant, married Lula May Talley (1875-1917), he died of pneumonia in Laurel, DE. Children:
    • Robert Harold Montgomery (b. 1922) died at birth.
    • Albert Norton Montgomery, Jr. (1895-1987) born in Freeport, NY, died in Wilmington, DE. Albert married Gertrude Jane Steele on June 25, 1918 in Ocean View, DE, who died in 1940. He was a WWI Corporal in the 59th Infantry 1917-1918.

Career

He was Captain of a schooner in Little Creek, DE where he lived.

Norton was listed as a correspondent for the Little Creek Landing Exclusive Brethren Hall in an 1879 directory, along with J.R. Matthews.

Death

He died May 27, 1884 at the age of 51, and was buried in the Gum Bush Cemetery, in Little Creek.  Phoebe died July 28, 1893 in Smyrna, DE at the age of 65.
