Authors

Preface (adapted from "Brethren Writers")

Every effort has been made to include in this list of authors only those who have been affiliated with Brethren assemblies for a documented length of time. This includes those who wrote pamphlets down to four pages, joint-authors, hymn writers, translators of published Scriptures, and editors of Brethren periodicals. The basis for including an author has sometimes been somewhat nebulous, but factors governing the decision were developed over a period of nearly twenty-five years of acquaintance with the literature, their publishers, and in consultation with those who are well acquainted with the literature over a period of many years. Some left the movement in the midst of their writing career and others afterword.

The weakest areas are probably the Latin American writers and writers on the mission fields, as these fields have not been explored systematically. Inclusion in the White-Campion list has usually been considered sufficient evidence to include a name, unless it was indicated in the list that the author was not among Brethren, or in some cases was obviously erroneously included. In spite of all due care, no doubt there are names in the list that ought not to be there and many that ought to be. These should be submitted to Doug Engle, or edited directly. The list of “Past Authors” was compiled initially by Arnold Douglas Ehlert (1909-1998), and has been revised since, with oral permission in 2017 from his son Benjamin Ehlert (1937-2018), and with acknowledgment from Baker Books.
