John Henry Hallier

John "Jack" Henry Hallier and his wife Reva Agnes were the founders of Vermillion Gospel Hall, KS that met in their farmhouse from 1948 to 1976. It may have also been known later as Vermillion Bible Chapel.

Early Life

John Henry "Jack" Hallier was born April 16, 1898 and the first five years of life were spent in Kansas City, MO. His parents were Otto (b. 1863) and Lizzie Hallier (b. 1864), both born in Germany, married in 1880, and emigrated to the USA in 1895. John was an orphan at the age of five, and was adopted by Ferdinand Fredric Brunkow and his wife Helena P. Hartwich Brunkow of Onaga, KS. The highest grade John completed, according to a 1940 census was 4th grade.

John's siblings

  • William H. Hallier (b. 1884) married in 1905 in Jackson, MO Augusta Constantia Mickelson. Augusta was born Aug. 4, 1912 in Newberry, MI to Charles and Lena Maria Mickelson, and baptized Oct. 15, 1912 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church (Messiah Lutheran) in Newberry, an Evangelical Lutheran church.

  • August E. Hallier (b. around 1901) married Inez Kuhn (b. around 1904 KS); August died 1968 Waukegan, IL;  
  • Mrs. Flora Teske (foster sister) in Topeka in 1970.
  • Clara Martha Brunkow (step-sister) b. 1894 Wheaton, KS; married 1914 in Wheaton to John Henry Graf (b. 1892 Neuchatel, KS; d. 1976 Westmoreland, KS); Clara died 1961 Onaga, KS; 

1918: Gresham, NE

In 1918 when registering for the WWI draft, John was single, living with and working for his brother-in-law Walter Gruber's father William's farm in Gresham, York, Nebraska.

Marriage

He married Reva Agnes Junod (photo below). Reva was born May 29, 1903 in Vermillion, KS to Paul Aime "Amos" Junod and Laura Elizabeth Villeme Junod. Paul was born in 1876 in Nods, Bern, Switzerland, died 1943 in Vermillion. Laura was born 1880 in Neuchatel, KS to Peter (1835-1899) and Emilie Julie Serre Mars Villeme (1843-1905). Emilie was born in Chaux, near Belfort, France.

Children

  • Victoria Elizabeth Hallier (1922-2005) who lived at home with her parents. In 1986, she was living in Beattie, KS.
  • LaVon Helen Hallier Maxon (1928-2015) married Thomas Leroy Maxon Jr. (1929-2001) in 1965, who was from California. In 1970, they were living in Prairie Village, KS. They died in Centralia, Nemaha, KS. Thomas served a Corporal in the Army Air Core in WWII, buried at Leavenworth.
  • Ellean Hallier Bridgforth (b. 1931) in 1950 married Virgil Dean Bridgforth (1925-1993) in Jackson, MO. Virgil was born in Peculiar, Cass, MO to Charles Benjamin Bridgforth (1879-1952) and Mary E. Lee Moses Bridgforth (1884-1941). In 1970, Ellean was living in Olathe, KS and her married name was McDowell.
  • Otto Paul Hallier (1932-2013) in 1952 married Patsy Sue Smith (b. 1931) in Jackson, MO; 1961 was living in Overland Park, KS, 2nd wife's name was listed as Marjorie. In 1970, Otto was living in Shawnee, KS. He later died in Vermillion.  Funeral service was listed at Fellowship Baptist Church of Onaga.  Memorial contributions directed to the Topeka Rescue Mission.   Son may be Mark A. Hallier in Vermillion.    

1930: Cleveland, KS

In the 1930 Census, John was living and working as a general laborer, possibly railroad, in Cleveland, Marshall, KS.

1940: Neuchatel, KS

In the 1940 Census, John was self-employed as a farmer 1.5 miles north of Neuchatel, KS which may be where the church started.  It was said by a Cleveland local that John may have built a newer house near Lillis.

Death

John died July 3, 1970 in Onaga, Pottawatomie, KS. He and his family are buried in the cemetery at Neuchatel, Nemaha, KS. In his obit, he was listed as a member of the "Bible Chapel", expecting that's the same Brethren assembly in his home as it was listed in the Brethren assembly address book thru 1976.

In 1979, Reva moved to Centralia, KS and died January 8, 1986 in Kansas City, MO. Later in life, she was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Seneca, KS.
