Rev. Archibald Arele Gillies served as pastor of Eaton Baptist Church from the early 1840's thru the 1880's. However, in the 1861 Census, his family identified as "Christian Brethren", hence the association with the [[Eaton Meeting RoomChristian Brethren, QC]].
He was the son of Duncan Gillies who emigrated to Canada in 1818, settling in Dundee, Huntingdon, QC. Archibald studied at the academy at Fort Covington, NY, which is where he was converted, and baptized by Elder Safford on Sept. 11, 1831. Then entered the Baptist college in Montreal. Made a missionary tour during his summer vacation of 1841 and ministered in the Eaton area in Mr. William Stone's barnfor a "large and attentive congregation", and also on a Sunday morning at the Congregational church in Eaton, preaching both places on Psalms 84:11.
