Nels Thompson was saved under the preaching of [[Henry Allan Ironside|Harry Ironside ]] in 1912, who discipled him, presumably at Gospel Auditorium in Oakland, California, which at the time, was associated with the Grant Brethren. Nels was in fellowship with the Brethren until 1919, when he left on account of control they were attempting to exert over as aspect of his evangelistic ministry.
He spent many years traveling, particularly along the West Coast of the United States, evangelizing, particularly with a "Gospel car" that he had painted evangelistic Bible verses on. He planted twenty assemblies, fifteen of which exist to this day, and are known as the Last Day Messenger Assemblies.
