He was born May 14, 1827 in Vullien, Vaud, Switzerland, the son of Ferdinand Thonney (1760-1832) and Julie Bahon Thonney (1784-1836), emigrating to the U.S. on Apr. 15, 1850, married Julia Mennet (1828-1916) on Jan. 17, 1852 at Edwardsville, Madison, [[Illinois|IL]]. By 1856 he lived at Greenville, Bond, IL, and in 1870 he was at Beaver Creek, Bond, IL where it is presumed the year he relocated to Walla Walla, likely via the Oregon Trail.
