The Beard family was CoE in 1873, as was the Rix family. John Beard was self-employed in 1861 as a yeoman (independent farmer).

Husband: Alfred Alexander Ellis (b. 1873 Bathurst, Gloucester, [[New Brunswick|NB]] - d. 1942 Wetaskiwin, AB), son of Edward Thomas Ellis (b. 1844 Stonehaven, Gloucester, NB - d. 1928 Ottawa, ON) & Mary Jane Armstrong Ellis (b. 1844 Otonabee, Peterborough, ON - d. 1905 Ottawa, ON. Alfred & Bertha were PB in 1916 in Wetaskewin, and Alfred was self-employed as a grocer. He also served once as mayor in Wetaskiwin, and several times as an alderman. His family relocated to Ottawa, ON in 1874, then Wetaskiwin in 1892 where Alfred homesteaded, then in 1904 to Edmonton, engaging first in the implement business, then in produce.
