He studied ministry at the Normal University, and his obit states that in "later years he served as an interdenominational lay-preacher on numerous occasions". Josiah joined the NJ conference of the Methodist Episcopals as a circuit rider for 30 years starting in 1856. After retiring from preaching, he purchased 80 acres of land in Spring Creek (near Curran), Sangamon, IL introducing "some of the best varieties of fruit from New Jersey, particularly strawberries.
