TIG 1930-9-10: Other Deaths: "James Jefferson Irvin, 43, of Lucerne, married and the father of several children, was fatally injured by a fall of rock in the mine of the Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal Company at Lucerne, at 10:30 yesterday morning. Mr. Irvin was loading coal when a large section of rock let go from the roof in the room where he was working, crushed him to the floor of the mine, and practically enveloped his head and body. When rescued by fellow workmen he was unconscious and it was realized at once he was fatally injured. He was removed to Indiana Hospital where he passed away at 1:15 yesterday afternoon, without regaining consciousness.
The deceased was 43 years old and was born Nov. 22, 1887, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Irvin, of Berwindale. He had lived for 12 years in this vicinity. He was a member of the Gospel Hall congregation, Indiana. The deceased leaves his widow, Mrs. Jennie Irvin and these children: Mrs. Beverly Irene Irvin Henry, Indiana; Mrs. Ruth Mildred Irvin Henry, Indiana; John, Howard, David, Billy and Robert, at home; two brothers, Alexander Irvin, Indiana, and Howard Irvin, of Clearfield county, and two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Woods, LaJose, and Mrs. Annie Troxell of New Washington, Pa. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 o'clock Thursday morning at his late residence on Grant street in this city. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery." The story, reworded, was reported subsequently in several other Indiana-based newspapers on their front page.
