*** James was a veteran of the Civil War, active Nov. 9, 1861 - Aug. 31, 1864, enlisted in Manchester by [https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/96714940 Col. Haldemand Sumner Putnam] (b. 1836 Cornish City, Sullivan, NH - d. 1863 Fort Wagner, SC) who was killed in action while in command of the 2nd Brigade during an attack on Fort Wagner, SC. Haldemand was a son of John Lyscom Putnam (1792-1875 Cornish, NH) & Adeline Matilda Sumner Putnam (b. 1811 Claremont, NH - d. 1893 Corinth, VT)
